²⁵ And they asked him, and said to him: Why then dost thou immerse, if thou art not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?

²³ And when he had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said: By what authority doest thou these things; and who gave thee this authority?

²⁰ And he confessed, and denied not; and he confessed: I am not the Christ. ²¹ And they asked him: What then? Art thou Elijah? And he says: I am not. Art thou the Prophet? And he answered: No. ²² They said therefore to him: Who art thou? that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

⁵ And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes, ⁶ and Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together unto Jerusalem. ⁷ And having set them in the midst, they asked: By what power, or by what name, did ye do this?

²⁸ saying: Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us.
