²⁶ For what is a man profited, if he gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give as a ransom for his soul?

⁵ but they do all their works to be seen by men; they make their phylacteries broad, and enlarge the fringes of their garments, ⁶ and love the uppermost places at feasts, ⁷ and the chief seats in the synagogues, and salutations in public assemblies, and to be called by men Rabbi, Rabbi.

⁸ Again the devil taketh Him to a very high mountain, and sheweth Him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; ⁹ and saith unto Him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me: ¹⁰ then Jesus saith unto him, Be gone, Satan; for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God,

¹⁶ Be alike affected to each other: not aiming at high things, but accommodating yourselves to persons of low rank. Be not wise in your own conceit.

²⁰ being studious however so to preach the gospel, not where Christ had been named, least I should build upon another man's foundation;

⁸ Take heed least any one make a prey of you by philosophy and vain deceit, according to the tradition of men, after the elements of the world, and not after Christ:

² Ye desire, and ye have not: ye are envious, and jealous, and cannot obtain: ye fight and contend; but ye have not, because ye ask not.

⁴⁴ How can ye believe, who receive applause from each other, and the glory which is from God only, ye seek not?

⁴ Look not every one to his own interests only, but every one also to the concerns of others.

¹ Whence come wars and fightings among you? Come they not hence? even of your carnal appetites making war in your bodies? ² Ye desire, and ye have not: ye are envious, and jealous, and cannot obtain: ye fight and contend; but ye have not, because ye ask not.

⁹ But they, that will be rich, fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which plunge men into ruin and perdition.

¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the desire of the flesh, and the desire of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but of the world.

¹² and whosoever will humble himself shall be exalted.

³³ But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these shall be superadded unto you.
