²⁴ No one can be a slave to two masters, for either he will hate one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot be slaves of God and money.

³³ Sell your property and give to charity. Provide for yourselves purses that will never wear out, riches that never fail in heaven, where a thief cannot come near nor a moth destroy, ³⁴ For wherever your treasure is, there too your heart will be.

²⁴ His disciples were startled at this statement. But Jesus again said to them as He continued the topic, "My children, how hard it is to get into the kingdom of God! ²⁵ It is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye than for a rich man to get into the kingdom of God."

¹⁷ Continue charging the rich of this world to stop being haughty and not to fix their hope on a thing so uncertain as riches, but on God who richly and ceaselessly provides us with everything for our enjoyment;

³¹ So never worry and say, 'What are we going to have to eat? What are we going to have to drink? What are we going to have to wear?' ³² For the heathen are greedily pursuing all such things; and surely your heavenly Father well knows that you need them all. ³³ But as your first duty keep on looking for His standard of doing right, and for His will, and then all these things will be yours besides.

¹⁹ "Once there was a rich man who used to dress in purple and fine linen and live in dazzling luxury every day. ²⁰ And a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores, had been laid at his gate, ²¹ and he was always craving to get a square meal from the scraps that fell from the rich man's table. Yes, the very dogs used to come and lick his sores. ²² One day the beggar died and was carried away by the angels to be Abraham's bosom companion, and the rich man too died and was buried. ²³ And in Hades he looked up, in constant tortures as he was, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus his bosom companion. ²⁴ So he called and said, 'Father Abraham, take pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water to cool off my tongue, because I am ceaselessly tortured in this flame.' ²⁵ But Abraham said, 'My child, remember that you received in full your blessings in your lifetime, and Lazarus his hardships in his, but now he is continuously comforted here, while you are continuously tortured there. ²⁶ Besides all this, between you and us there stands fixed a great chasm, so that those who want to cross from this side to you cannot, nor can they cross from your side to us.' ²⁷ Then he said, 'For this reason, I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house ²⁸ (for I have five brothers) to warn them, that they too may not come to this place of torture.' ²⁹ But Abraham said, 'They have Moses and the prophets; let them listen to them.' ³⁰ But he pleaded, 'No, father Abraham, but if someone went to them from the dead, they would repent.' ³¹ Then he answered, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced, even if someone rises from the dead.'"

⁵ You must have a turn of mind that is free from avarice; you must be content with what you have, for God Himself has said, "I will never fail you, I will never forsake you."

¹⁹ "Stop storing up your riches on earth where moths and rust make away with them, and where thieves break in and steal them. ²⁰ But keep on storing up your riches in heaven where moths and rust do not make away with them and where thieves do not break in and steal them. ²¹ For wherever your treasure is, there too your heart will be.

⁶ Now the fact is, religion with contentment is a means of great gain. ⁷ For we bring nothing into the world and surely we can take nothing out of it. ⁸ If we have food and clothes we will be satisfied. ⁹ But men who keep planning to get rich fall into temptations and snares and many foolish, hurtful desires which plunge people into destruction and ruin.
