Bible verses about "greed" | Williams

James 4:3

3 You ask and fail to get them, because you ask with evil, selfish motives, to spend them on your pleasures.

James 5:1-6

1 Come now, you rich people, weep aloud and howl over the miseries that are sure to overtake you. 2 Your wealth has rotted, your clothes are moth-eaten, 3 your gold and silver have rusted, and their rust will testify against you and devour your flesh like fire. You have stored up these things for the last days. 4 See, the wages that you have kept back from the laborers who reaped your fields are crying aloud, and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. 5 Here on earth you have lived in luxury and self-indulgence; you have fattened your hearts for the day of slaughter. 6 You have condemned and murdered the upright man; he offers no resistance.

Matthew 6:24

24 No one can be a slave to two masters, for either he will hate one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot be slaves of God and money.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11

9 Do you not know that wrongdoers will not have a share in the kingdom of God? Stop being misled; people who are sexually immoral or idolaters or adulterers or sensual or guilty of unnatural sexual vice 10 or thieves or greedy graspers for more or drunkards or slanderers or swindlers will not have a share in the kingdom of God. 11 And these are just the characters some of you used to be. But now you have washed yourselves clean, you have been consecrated, you are now in right standing with God, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of God.

1 John 2:16

16 because everything that is in the world, the things that our lower nature and eyes are longing for, and the proud pretensions of life, do not come from the Father, but from the world;

Luke 12:15

15 And then He said to them, "Be ever on the alert and always on your guard against every form of greed, because a man's life does not consist in his possessions, even though they are abundant."

Hebrews 13:5

5 You must have a turn of mind that is free from avarice; you must be content with what you have, for God Himself has said, "I will never fail you, I will never forsake you."

1 Timothy 6:9

9 But men who keep planning to get rich fall into temptations and snares and many foolish, hurtful desires which plunge people into destruction and ruin. 10 For the love of money is the root of all sorts of evil, and some men in reaching after riches have wandered from the faith and pierced their hearts with many a pang.
