¹ You married women, in the same way, must be submissive to your husbands, so that, if any of them do not believe the message, they may be won over without a word through the living of the wives, ² when they see how chaste and respectful you are. ³ Your adornments must be not of an external nature, with braids of hair or ornaments of gold, or changes of dress, ⁴ but they must be of an internal nature, the character concealed in the heart, in the imperishable quality of a quiet and gentle spirit, which is of great value in the sight of God. ⁵ For this is the way the pious women of olden times, who set their hope on God, used to adorn themselves. ⁶ They were submissive to their husbands, as Sarah, for example, obeyed Abraham and called him master. You have become true daughters of hers, if you practice doing right and cease from every fear.

²⁵ So I tell you, stop worrying about your life, as to what you will have to eat or drink, or about your body, as to what you will have to wear. Is not life worth more than food and the body worth more than clothes? ²⁶ Take a good look at the wild birds, for they do not sow or reap, or store up food in barns, and yet your heavenly Father keeps on feeding them. Are you not worth more than they? ²⁷ But which of you by worrying can add a single minute to his life? ²⁸ And why should you worry about clothes? Look at the wild lilies and learn how they grow. They do not toil or spin; ²⁹ but I tell you, not even Solomon, in all his gorgeous splendor, was ever dressed up like a single one of these. ³⁰ Now if God so gorgeously dresses the wild grass which today is green but tomorrow is tossed into the furnace, will He not much more surely clothe you, O you with little faith? ³¹ So never worry and say, 'What are we going to have to eat? What are we going to have to drink? What are we going to have to wear?' ³² For the heathen are greedily pursuing all such things; and surely your heavenly Father well knows that you need them all. ³³ But as your first duty keep on looking for His standard of doing right, and for His will, and then all these things will be yours besides.

¹⁹ Or, are you not conscious that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit that is in you, whom you have as a gift from God? Furthermore, you are not your own, ²⁰ for you have been bought and actually paid for. So you must honor God with your bodies.

⁹ I want the women, on their part, to dress becomingly, that is, modestly and sensibly, not adorning themselves with braided hair and gold or pearls or expensive dresses, ¹⁰ but with good deeds; for this is appropriate for women who profess to be pious.
