¹ Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

¹⁷ Whatsoever ye do in word or deed, [do] all in the name of Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

¹² Not as Cain was of that wicked one, and slew his brother: And wherefore slew he him? Because his own Works were evil, and his brothers righteous.

¹ From whence [are] wars and whence fightings among you? [are they] not hence, of your lusts, that war in your members? ² Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. ³ Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. ⁴ Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world, is the enemy of God. ⁵ Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? ⁶ But he giveth more grace: wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. ⁷ Submit your selves therefore to God; but resist the devil, and he will flee from you: ⁸ Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you: cleanse the hands, ye sinners, and purify the hearts, ye double-minded. ⁹ Be afflicted, and mourn, [and] weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and joy to heaviness. ¹⁰ Humble your selves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. ¹¹ Speak not evil one of another, my brethren. He that speaketh evil of a brother, or judgeth a brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. ¹² There is one lawgiver and judge, who is able to save, and to destroy: who art thou that judgest thy neighbour? ¹³ Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow let us go into such a city, and continue a year, and buy and sell; and we will get gain: ¹⁴ Whereas ye know not what [shall be] on the morrow: What [is]your life? It will be even a vapour that appeareth for a little time, and then also vanisheth away. ¹⁵ For that ye [ought] to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. ¹⁶ But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil. ¹⁷ Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

⁵ Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come; who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then shall every one have praise of God.

⁵ Now the end of the commandment is charity, out of a pure heart, and a good conscience, and faith unfeigned:

¹ Take heed that ye do not your righteousness before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father in the heavens.

³ [Do] nothing through strife, or vain-glory, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than themselves. ⁴ But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God, who trieth our hearts.

¹⁰ For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? If I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

Verily I say unto you, they have their reward. ³ But when thou dost alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doth: ⁴ That thine alms may be in secret: and thy father who seeth in scret, himself shall reward thee. ⁵ And when thou shalt pray, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites: for they love to stand, and to pray in the synagogues, and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward. ⁶ But thou, when thou shalt pray, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father in secret, and thy Father who seeth in secret, shall reward thee. ⁷ But when ye pray, ye shall not use vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. ⁸ Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye open your mouth. ⁹ After this manner therefore pray ye; Our Father who art in the heavens, Hallowed be thy name. ¹⁰ Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done as in heaven, so on earth. ¹¹ Give us this day the bread necessary for our sustenance. ¹² And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debters. ¹³ And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. ¹⁴ For, if ye shall forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. ¹⁵ But if ye shall not forgive men, neither will your Father forgive you your trespasses. ¹⁶ Moreover, when ye fast, be not as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward. ¹⁷ But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face. ¹⁸ That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father who is in secret: and thy Father who seeth in secret, shall reward thee.
