¹⁸ And I say also to thee, Thou art Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

²⁸ And be not afraid of them who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul; but rather be afraid of him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

²³ And thou, Capernaum, who hast been exalted to heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained till this day.

¹⁹ There was a certain rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen, and feasted splendidly every day. ²⁰ And there was a certain beggar, named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores; ²¹ and desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table: yea, the dogs also came and licked his sores. ²² And the beggar died and was carried by angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died and was buried: ²³ And in hell lifting up his eyes, being in torments, he seeth Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom. ²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. ²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember, that thou in thy life-time receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. ²⁶ And besides all this, between us and you, there is a great gulph fixed; so that they who would pass from us to you, cannot, neither can they pass to us that would come from thence. ²⁷ Then he said, I pray thee, therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: ²⁸ For I have five brethren; that he may testify to them, lest they also come into this place of torment. ²⁹ Abraham saith to him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. ³⁰ And he said, Nay, father Abraham; but if one go to them from the dead, they will repent. ³¹ And he said to him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded tho' one rose from the dead.

²⁷ For thou wilt not leave my soul in Hades, neither wilt thou suffer thy holy one to see corruption.

³¹ He foreseeing this, spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in Hades, neither did his flesh see corruption.

¹⁸ And he that liveth and was dead, and behold I am alive for evermore, and have the keys of death and of Hades.

¹³ And the sea gave up the dead that were therein; and death and hades gave up the dead that were in them; and they were judged every one according to their works. ¹⁴ And death and hades were cast into the lake of fire: this is the second death.

⁸ And I saw and behold a pale horse, and he that sat on him, his name was Death, (and Hades followeth even with him) and power was given him over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with the scimetar, and with famine, and with death, and by the beasts of the earth.
