³ I said to them, Don't let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot. While they stand guard, let them shut the doors, and you bar them; and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, everyone in his watch, with everyone near his house.

³⁴ Blessed is the person who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at my doorways

¹¹ The burden concerning Dumah. He calls to me from Seir, Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night? ¹² The watchman replies: "Morning is coming, but also the night. If you would ask, then ask; and come back yet again."

³ The watchmen going about the city found me. I said, Have you seen Him whom my soul loves?

¹ The word of the LORD came to me, saying, ² Son of man, speak to the sons of thy people, and say to them, When I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and set him for their watchman, ³ if he see the sword coming upon the land, and blow the trumpet, and warn the people; ⁴ and he who heareth the trumpet doth not take warning; and the sword cometh and cutteth him off; his blood shall be on his own head. ⁵ He heard the sound of the trumpet, and didn't take warning; his blood shall be on him; whereas if he had taken warning, he would have delivered his soul. ⁶ "'But if the watchman sees the enemy coming and does not blow his horn to warn the people and the enemy comes and kills someone, that watchman must die because of his sin. I will hold him responsible for their deaths.' ⁷ "So you, son of man, I have set you a watchman to the house of Israel; therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. ⁸ When I say to the wicked man, O wicked man, you will surely die and you do not speak to warn the wicked man from his way, that wicked man will die in his iniquity, but I will require his blood at your hand. ⁹ "But if you warn a wicked man to turn from his way and he does not turn from his way, he will die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your life.

¹ The word of the LORD came to me, saying, ² Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel. Prophesy and say to them, to the shepherds, So says the Sovereign LORD: Woe to the shepherds of Israel who are feeding themselves! Should not the shepherds feed the flock? ³ You eat the fat and clothe yourselves with the wool; you kill the fat ones, but you do not feed the flock. ⁴ "'"You have not strengthened those that were weak, healed those who were sick, or bandaged those who were injured. You have not brought back those who strayed away or looked for those who were lost. You have ruled them harshly and violently. ⁵ And they were scattered because there was no shepherd; and they became meat to all the beasts of the field, and were scattered. ⁶ "'"My sheep wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill. They were scattered throughout the entire earth. No one searched or looked for them. ⁷ "'"Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the LORD: ⁸ '"As I am alive, declares the Sovereign LORD, because there is no shepherd, my sheep have become prey. My sheep have become food for wild animals. My shepherds have not searched for my sheep. They have taken care of only themselves, not my sheep."' ⁹ therefore, O shepherds, hear the word of the LORD, ¹⁰ 'Thus says the Sovereign LORD: "Look! I am against the shepherds, and I will seek my flock from their hand, and I will put an end to them from shepherding flocks, and the shepherds will no longer feed themselves, and I will deliver my flocks from their mouth, so that they will not be as food for them." ¹¹ For so says the Sovereign LORD: Behold, I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them out. ¹² As a shepherd seeks his flock in the day that he is among his scattered sheep, so I will seek out My sheep and will deliver them from all the places where they were scattered in a day of cloud and thick cloud. ¹³ And I will bring them out from the peoples, and I will gather them from the countries, and I will bring them to their soil, and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, in the valleys, and in all of the settlements of the land. ¹⁴ I will feed them in good pasture. On the lofty mountain of Israel shall be their folds; there they shall lie down and rest there in luxurious ease, and be fed in a rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. ¹⁵ I will feed My sheep, and I will make them lie down, declares the Sovereign LORD. ¹⁶ "I will seek the lost. I will bring back the scattered. I will bind up the broken and strengthen the sick. The fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with judgment." ¹⁷ "'As for you, my sheep, this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "I will judge disputes between one sheep and another, between rams and male goats. ¹⁸ "'Is it not enough for you to feed on the good pasture? Must you trample the rest of the pasture with your feet? You drink clean water. Must you muddy the rest of the water with your feet? ¹⁹ "'Must my sheep eat what your feet have trampled and drink what your feet have muddied?" ²⁰ Therefore thus says the Sovereign LORD to them: Behold, I, even I, will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. ²¹ Because you thrust with side and with shoulder, and push all the diseased with your horns, until you have scattered them abroad; ²² And so I will save my flock, and they will no longer be for plunder, and I will judge between one sheep and another. ²³ "'I will place one shepherd over them, my servant David. He will take care of them. He will take care of them and be their shepherd. ²⁴ I, the LORD, will be their God, and my servant David prince among them;" I, the LORD, have spoken it. ²⁵ And I will make a covenant of peace with them, and will send the evil beasts out of the land. And they shall dwell safely in the wilderness and sleep in the woods. ²⁶ And I will make them a blessing round about my hill: and I will send down the rain in its season, there shall be showers of blessing. ²⁷ The tree of the field will yield its fruit, and the earth will yield its increase, and they will be secure in their land. Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I have broken the bars of their yoke, and have delivered them out of the hand of those who made slaves of them. ²⁸ "'"They will no longer be prey to the nations. Wild animals will no longer eat them. They will live safely, and no one will frighten them. ²⁹ And I will raise for them a garden plot of renown, and they will no longer be victims of famine in the land, and they will not bear any more the insult of the nations. ³⁰ They will know that I, the LORD, their God am with them, and that they, the house of Israel, are my people, says the Sovereign LORD. ³¹ You my sheep, the sheep of my pasture, are men, and I am your God,' says the Sovereign LORD.”

¹⁷ Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch over your souls as those who must give an account. To this end, allow them to lead with joy and not with grief, for that would be of no advantage to you.

⁹ But we prayed to our God. We also set up guards day and night because of them.

⁵ They set the table, they spread out the cloth, they eat, they drink; Rise up, captains, oil the shields, ⁶ For this is what the LORD says to me: "Go, station the lookout, and let him report what he sees. ⁷ When he sees chariots, horsemen in pairs, riders on donkeys, riders on camels, let him listen diligently, very diligently." ⁸ Then the lookout shouted: "Lord, I stand continually on the watchtower in the daytime, and every night I stay at my post. ⁹ "Look! Here come chariots and horsemen in pairs. Then he said: 'Babylon has fallen! She has fallen! ⁸ Listen! Your watchmen lift up their voices. Together they shout for joy. They will see it with their own eyes when the LORD returns to Zion.

¹² Set up the banner on the walls of Babylon; make the watch strong; set up the watchmen; prepare the ambushes. For the LORD has both planned and done that which He spoke against the people of Babylon.

How long will you enrich yourself by extortion?' ⁷ Won’t your debtors rise up suddenly, and wake up those who make you tremble, and you will be their victim? ⁸ Because you have plundered many nations, all the nations that are left shall plunder you, because of the blood of men, and the sins of the land and city, and of all that dwell in it. ⁹ Woe to him who robs evil booty for his house, to set his nest on high, to be delivered from the hand of evil! ¹⁰ You have plotted shame for your house, cutting off many peoples and sinning against your life. ¹¹ For the stone from the wall shall cry out, and the cross-beam from the wood shall answer it. ¹² "Woe to him who builds a town with bloodshed and establishes a city with iniquity! ¹³ "Is it for the LORD Almighty that the peoples labor for the fire? Do the nations weary themselves for vanity? ¹⁴ For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea. ¹⁵ "Woe to him who gives his neighbor drink, pouring your inflaming wine until they are drunk, so that you may gaze at their naked bodies. ¹⁶ You are filled with shame, and not glory. You will also drink, and be exposed. The cup of the LORD's right hand will come around to you, and disgrace will cover your glory. ¹⁷ Indeed, the violence done to Lebanon will overtake you, and the destruction of the beasts will terrorize you because you shed human blood and did violence to the land, to the city, and to all who live in it. ¹⁸ What does an image profit, for its maker has carved it; a molten image, and a teacher of lies? For does the maker trust in his work on it, to make dumb idols? ¹⁹ Woe to him who says to the wood, 'Wake up!' And to a lifeless stone, 'Arise!' Can he teach? Look, it is covered with gold and silver, and there is no breath within it. ²⁰ But the LORD is in his holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before him."

⁶ I have set watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem. They will never be silent day nor night. You who call on the LORD, take no rest,

Why then will you die, O house of Israel?"' ¹² "So you, son of man, say to your people that the righteousness of the righteous shall not save him in the day of his transgression, and the wickedness of the wicked will not cause him to stumble on the day of his returning from his wickedness; and the righteous will not be able to live by it on the day when he returns to his sin. ¹³ When I tell the righteous that he will surely live; if he trusts in his righteousness, and commits iniquity, none of his righteous deeds will be remembered; but he will die in his iniquity that he has committed. ¹⁴ Again, when I say to the wicked man, You will surely die, if he turns from his sin and does what is lawful and right, ¹⁵ if the wicked restore the pledge, give again that which he had taken by robbery, walk in the statutes of life, committing no iniquity; he will surely live. He will not die. ¹⁶ None of his sins that he has committed will be remembered against him. He has done what is lawful and right; he will surely live. ¹⁷ "Yet your people say, 'The way of the Lord is not fair!' yet their way is not fair. ¹⁸ When the righteous man turns from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, he shall even die in it. ¹⁹ And when the wicked man turns from his wickedness and does what is lawful and right, he will live by it. ²⁰ Yet you say, The way of the Lord is not fair. O house of Israel, I will judge you, each one according to his ways. ²¹ In the twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth month, in the fifth day of the month, one who had escaped out of Jerusalem came to me, saying, “The city has been defeated!” ²² Now the hand of the the LORD had been upon me the evening before the fugitive came; and He had opened my mouth by the time the man came to me in the morning. So my mouth was opened, and I was no longer dumb. ²³ Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, ²⁴ "Son of man, the inhabitants of these ruins on the soil of Israel are saying, 'Abraham was one man, and he took possession of the land, and we are many; the land has been given for us as a possession.' ²⁵ Therefore say to them, The Sovereign LORD says thus: You eat with the blood and lift up your eyes to your idols and shed blood. And will you possess the land? ²⁶ You rely on your sword, you work abomination, and every one of you defiles his neighbour's wife. Shall you possess the land? ²⁷ Thus you will say to them. The Sovereign LORD says thus: As I live, surely those who are in the waste places will fall by the sword and he who is in the open field I will give to the beasts to be devoured and those who are in the strongholds and in the caves will die of the pestilence. ²⁸ And I will make the land a desolation and a wasteland, and the pride of its strength will come to an end, and the mountains of Israel will be desolate with no one traveling through them." ' ²⁹ And they shall know that I am the LORD, when I have made the land desolate and a waste because of all their abominations which they have done. ³⁰ "Son of man, your people are talking about you by the walls and in the doorways of their homes. They are saying to each other: 'Let's go and hear the word that has come from the LORD.' ³¹ And they come to you as the people come, and they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words. But they will not do them. For with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goes after their unjust gain. ³² And, behold, you are to them as a singer of love songs with a beautiful voice, and playing well on an instrument. For they hear your words, but they are not doing them. ³³ “When this comes to pass—behold, it comes—then they will know that a prophet has been among them.”
