¹ »A man steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it. He must pay five oxen for the ox and four sheep for the sheep. ² If the thief is found breaking in, and is struck so that he dies, there shall be no guilt of bloodshed for him. ³ If the sun has risen on him, he is guilty of bloodshed. He shall make restitution. If he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. ⁴ If what was stolen is actually found alive in his possession, whether an ox, a donkey or a sheep, he shall repay double. ⁵ " 'If a man grazes his livestock in a field or a vineyard and he releases his livestock and it grazes in the field of another, he will make restitution from the best of his field and the best of his vineyard. ⁶ "When a fire breaks out and spreads into thorn bushes and consumes stacked grain or standing grain or the field, the one who started the fire shall surely make restitution. ⁷ "When a man gives his neighbor money or goods for safekeeping and it's stolen from the neighbor's house, the thief, if found, shall repay double. ⁸ If the thief is not found, the owner of the house shall appear before the judges to see whether or not the thief took his neighbor's property. ⁹ "In every ownership dispute involving an ox, donkey, sheep, garment, or anything that is lost where a person says, 'This is mine,' the case between the two of them shall come before the judges, and the one that the judges declare guilty shall repay double to his neighbor. ¹⁰ "When a man gives a donkey or ox or sheep or any animal to his neighbor for safe keeping, and it dies or is injured or is driven away when no one is looking, ¹¹ "The case between them must be settled by swearing an oath to the LORD that the neighbor did not take the other person's animal. The owner must accept the oath. The neighbor does not have to make up for the loss. ¹² "However, if the animal was stolen from the neighbor, he must make up for the owner's loss. ¹³ If it was torn to pieces, let the neighbor bring the remains as evidence, and he shall not make restitution for what was torn apart. ¹⁴ " 'If a man borrows from his neighbor and it is injured or dies while its owner is not with it, he will make restitution. ¹⁵ »If the owner is with the animal, the borrower does not have to make up for the loss. If it is rented, the rental fee covers the loss. ¹⁶ "When a man seduces a virgin who is not engaged to be married and lies with her, he must pay her bride-price, and she becomes his wife. ¹⁷ If her father absolutely refuses to give her to him, he shall pay an amount equal to the bride-price for virgins. ¹⁸ You will not allow a sorceress to live. ¹⁹ "The person who has sexual intercourse with an animal must be put to death. ²⁰ " 'Whoever sacrifices to the gods—not to Yahweh, to him alone—will be destroyed. ²¹ “You shall not wrong an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt. ²² "Do not mistreat any widow or orphan. ²³ If you hurt them, they will cry out to me, and I will hear their cry: ²⁴ and My wrath will grow hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless. ²⁵ "When you lend money to any of my people who are poor, do not act like a moneylender and require him to pay interest. ²⁶ If you take your neighbor's coat as collateral, you shall return it to him by sunset, ²⁷ because it is his only garment; it is his cloak for his skin. In what will he sleep? And when he cries out to me, I will hear, because I am gracious. ²⁸ "You shall not blaspheme God or curse a ruler of your people. ²⁹ "Do not delay the offering from your harvest and your vintage. Give the firstborn of your sons to me. ³⁰ "Do the same with your oxen and with your sheep. Its mother may keep it for seven days. On the eighth day give it to me. ³¹ "You are to be my holy people. Do not eat any flesh torn to bits in the field. Throw it to the dogs.

¹ "Indeed, if you diligently obey the LORD your God to carry out all his commands that I'm giving you today, then the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. ² Moreover, all these blessings will come upon you in abundance, if you obey the LORD your God: ³ You shall be blessed in the city, and be blessed in the field. ⁴ The fruit of your body will be blessed and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your beasts, the increase of your cattle and the young of your flock. ⁵ Your basket and your kneading-trough will be blessed. ⁶ You shall be blessed when you come in, and blessed when you go out. ⁷ The LORD will cause your enemies who rise up against you to be struck before you. They will come out against you one way, and will flee before you seven ways. ⁸ "the LORD will command the blessing upon you in your barns and in all that you put your hand to, and He will bless you in the land the LORD your God gives you. ⁹ "the LORD will establish you as a holy people to himself. He swore this to you, if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God and walk in His ways. ¹⁰ And all the peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they shall fear you. ¹¹ the LORD will grant you abundant prosperity in the fruit of your body, in the fruit of your livestock, and in the fruit of your ground, in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give you. ¹² the LORD will open to you his good treasure in the sky, to give the rain of your land in its season, and to bless all the work of your hand. You will lend to many nations, and you will not borrow. ¹³ The Lord will make you the head and not the tail; and you will ever have the highest place, if you give ear to the orders of the Lord your God which I give you today, to keep and to do them; ¹⁴ and do not turn aside from any of the words I command you today, to the right or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them. ¹⁵ "But if you don't obey the LORD your God and faithfully carry out all his commands and statutes that I'm giving you today, then all these curses will come upon you and overwhelm you. ¹⁶ You shall be cursed in the city, and cursed in the field. ¹⁷ Your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed. ¹⁸ "The fruit of your womb shall be cursed and the fruit of you ground, the calves of your cattle and the lambs of your flock. ¹⁹ You will be cursed when you come in and cursed when you go out. ²⁰ the LORD will send on you cursing, confusion and rebuke in all that you put your hand to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, because of the evil of your doings by which you have forsaken Him. ²¹ The LORD will cause you to be ill with long-lasting diseases until you are wiped out from the land that you are entering to possess. ²² the LORD shall smite you with attenuation, with fever and inflammation, with hot heat and drought, with blasting and mildew, and they will pursue you until you perish. ²³ The sky above your head will become bronze while the ground beneath you will become iron. ²⁴ the LORD will make the rain of your land powder and dust. It will come down on you from the sky, until you are destroyed. ²⁵ "the LORD will cause you to be stricken before your enemies. You will go out one way against them, and flee seven ways from them. You will be an object of horror to all the kingdoms of the earth. ²⁶ Your bodies will be meat for all the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth; there will be no one to send them away. ²⁷ the LORD will strike you with the boil of Egypt and with the tumours, the scurvy and the itch, from which you cannot be healed. ²⁸ The LORD shall strike you with madness, and blindness, and confusion of mind: ²⁹ and you will grope at noonday, as the blind man gropes in darkness. And you will not prosper in your ways. And you will only be oppressed and robbed always and there will be none to save you. ³⁰ You'll be engaged to a woman, but another man will rape her. You'll build a house but you won't live in it. You'll plant a vineyard but you won't harvest it. ³¹ Your ox will be slain before your eyes and you will not eat of it. Your donkey will be violently taken away from before your face and will not be restored to you. Your sheep will be given to your enemies and you will have none to save you. ³² Your sons and your daughters shall be given to other people, and you will be looking on longingly for them all day, but you will be powerless to do anything. ³³ A people whom you don't know will devour what your land and labor produces. You'll be only oppressed and discouraged continually ³⁴ so that the sights that you see with your eyes will drive you mad. ³⁵ The LORD shall strike you in the knees, and in the legs, with painful boils that cannot be healed, from the sole of your foot unto the top of your head. ³⁶ "the LORD will bring you and your king, whom you set over you, to a nation that neither you nor your fathers have known. There you will serve other gods made of wood and stone. ³⁷ And you will become a wonder and a name of shame among all the nations where the Lord will take you. ³⁸ You shall carry much seed out to the field, and you shall gather in little; for the locusts will devour it. ³⁹ You will plant vineyards and dress them, but you will neither drink of the wine, nor harvest, because worms will eat them. ⁴⁰ You will have olive trees throughout all your borders, but you won't anoint yourself with the oil, for your olives will drop off. ⁴¹ You will beget sons and daughters, but they will not be your, for they will go into captivity. ⁴² »Locusts will take over all your trees and the fruit of your land. ⁴³ The foreigner who is among you will mount up above you higher and higher, and you will come down lower and lower. ⁴⁴ He will lend to you and you will not lend to him. He will be the head and you will be the tail. ⁴⁵ All these curses will come on you, and will pursue you and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you didn't listen to the LORD your God's voice, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded you. ⁴⁶ They will be for a sign and for a wonder to you and to your offspring forever. ⁴⁷ "Because you didn't serve the LORD your God joyfully and wholeheartedly, despite the abundance of everything you have, ⁴⁸ therefore you will serve your enemies whom Yahweh sends against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in lack of all things. He will put an iron yoke on your neck until he has destroyed you. ⁴⁹ "the LORD will bring a nation against you from far away, from the end of the earth, as the eagle swoops down, a nation whose language you will not understand, ⁵⁰ A hard-faced nation, who will have no respect for the old or mercy for the young: ⁵¹ And it shall consume the fruit of your livestock and the fruit of your ground until you are destroyed, and who will not leave for you any grain, wine, and olive oil, calves of your herds, and lambs of your flock until it has destroyed you. ⁵² "They will blockade all your cities until the high, fortified walls you trust come down everywhere in your land. They will blockade all the cities everywhere in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. ⁵³ "Because of the hardships your enemies will make you suffer during the blockade, you will eat the flesh of your own children, the sons and daughters, whom the LORD your God has given you. ⁵⁴ "The kindest and most sensitive man among you will become stingy toward his brother, the wife he loves, and the children he still has left. ⁵⁵ »He will give none of them any of the flesh of his children that he is eating. It will be all that he has left. These are hardships your enemies will make you suffer during the blockade of all your cities. ⁵⁶ "The kindest and most sensitive woman among you, so sensitive and tender that she would not even step on an ant, will become stingy toward the husband she loves or toward her own son or daughter. ⁵⁷ She will eat her afterbirth and her newborn children secretly since there will be nothing left on account of the siege and distress with which your enemy will oppress you in your cities." ⁵⁸ If you will not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that you may fear this glorious and fearful name, the LORD your God, ⁵⁹ then he will inflict extraordinary plagues on you and your children, great and lasting plagues, and severe and lasting illnesses. ⁶⁰ "He will bring all the diseases of Egypt that you dreaded. They will cling to you. ⁶¹ "the LORD will also bring you every kind of sickness and plague not written in this Book of the Law. They will continue until you are dead. ⁶² "You were at one time as numerous as the stars in the sky. But only a few of you will be left. This is because you did not obey the LORD your God. ⁶³ Just as the LORD delighted to prosper and increase you, so now the LORD will delight to destroy, exterminate, and banish you from the land that you are about to enter to possess." ⁶⁴ "He'll scatter you among the peoples from one end of the earth to the other, and there you'll serve other gods made of wood and stones, which neither you nor your ancestors have known. ⁶⁵ Among those nations you'll have no rest. There'll be no resting place for the soles of your feet. Instead, the LORD will give you an anxious heart, failing eyesight, and a despairing spirit. ⁶⁶ You'll cling to life, being fearful by both night and day, with no assurance of survival. ⁶⁷ In the morning you will say, If only it was evening! And at evening you will say, If only morning would come! Because of the fear in your hearts and the things which your eyes will see. ⁶⁸ Finally, the LORD will bring you back to Egypt by ship, a place that I said you'll never see again. There you'll try to sell yourselves to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you."

⁴⁴ You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies.

⁹ Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who submit to or perform homosexual acts, ¹⁰ nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

⁸ But to the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and sexually immoral and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. This is the second death.”

⁴ He who says, 'I know him,' but does not obey his commands, is a liar and the truth is not in him;

⁸ If any one does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his own family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

¹⁰ The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

¹⁹ Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written: “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”

²⁸ He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing good with his own hands, that he may have something to share with the one in need.
