1 Kings 12:6-19

6 Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who used to stand before Solomon his father, while he yet lived, saying,—How do, ye, advise, that I answer this people? 7 They said to him: "If you will be a servant to this people today, caring for them and giving them a favorable answer, then they will be your servants for ever." 8 But he rejected the advice of the old men, which they gave him, and he consulted with the youngsters who had grown up with him, who were serving before him. 9 He said to them, "What are you advising that we should reply to this people who spoke to me by saying, 'Lighten the yoke your father put on us.'" 10 The young men who had grown up with him said to him, “Tell these people who spoke to you, saying, 'Your father made our yoke heavy, but make it lighter to us;' tell them, 'My little finger is thicker than my father's waist. 11 and now, my father laid on you a heavy yoke, and I add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, and I--I chastise you with scorpions.. 12 And they came, Jeroboam and all the people, to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king had spoken, saying, Come back to me on the third day. 13 the king answered the people churlishly and left the advice that old men gave him: 14 and spoke to them, in the manner the young men advised, saying, My father made your yoke heavy but I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. 15 The king would not listen to the people because the turn of events was from the LORD, to fulfill his prediction that the LORD spoke through Nebat's son Ahijah the Shilonite. 16 When all of Israel saw that the king would not listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, "What share do we have in David? There is no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, Israel! Now look to your house, David!" Then Israel went to their tents. 17 But, as for the sons of Israel who were dwelling in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them. 18 King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was in charge of conscripted labor, but all of Israel stoned him to death, and King Rehoboam had to jump in his chariot and flee back in a hurry to Jerusalem. 19 Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.

Proverbs 16:1-33

1 To mortals belong the plans of the heart, but from the LORD comes the answer of the tongue. 2 All the ways of a man are open to his eyes: the Lord is the weigher of spirits. 3 Commit your deeds to the LORD, and your plans shall succeed. 4 The LORD has made everything for its own end—yes, even the wicked for the day of evil. 5 The LORD detests those who are proud; truly they will not go unpunished. 6 Through kindness and truth is iniquity atoned for; and by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil. 7 When a man's ways please the LORD He makes even his enemies live at peace with him. 8 Better is a little with righteousness Than much income with injustice. 9 A man's heart plans his course, but the LORD directs his steps. 10 Divination is in the lips of the king, his mouth shall not err in judgment. 11 Honest balances and scales are the LORD's; all the weights in the bag are his work. 12 Kings detest wrong-doing, for through righteousness the throne is established. 13 Righteous lips are the delight of kings; they value one who speaks the truth. 14 The king's wrath is a messenger of death, but a wise man will pacify it. 15 The light of the king's face causes life. His favor is like a gentle rain in spring. 16 How much better to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding instead of silver! 17 The highway of the upright departs from evil. He who guards his way preserves his life. 18 Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. 19 It is better to be lowly of spirit with the humble Than to apportion loot with the proud. 20 He who heeds the word finds prosperity, and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD. 21 The wise-hearted person is said to be discerning, and pleasant speech promotes instruction. 22 Understanding is a fountain of life unto him that hath it; but folly is the chastisement of fools. 23 A wise person's thoughts control his words, and his speech promotes instruction. 24 Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones. 25 There is a way which seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. 26 The life of a worker works for him, for his hunger urges him. 27 An ungodly man plots evil, and his lips are like a burning fire. 28 A perverse man stirs up strife, and a gossip separates close friends. 29 A violent man entices his neighbor, and leads him into the way that is not good. 30 One who winks his eyes to plot perversities, one who compresses his lips, is bent on evil. 31 Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is attained by a life of righteousness. 32 One slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city. 33 The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD.

Proverbs 12:15

15 The ways of fools are straight before them; but the wise listens to advice.
