¹ the LORD was gracious to Sarah, as he had said. the LORD did for Sarah what he had promised.

²⁷ And God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him, male and female he created them.

³ The angel of the LORD appeared to the woman and said to her, Look now, you are barren and childless but you will conceive and bear a son. ⁴ And now, watch now, and drink not wine and strong drink, and thou shalt not eat any thing unclean: ⁵ because you will conceive and bear a son. No razor will touch his head, because the boy will be a Nazirite of God from birth. And it is he who will begin to deliver Israel from the hand of the Philistines." ⁶ Then the woman told her husband: »A man of God came to me. He looked as frightening as the angel of God. I did not ask him where he came from, and he did not tell me his name. ⁷ And he said to me, 'Look, you will conceive and bear a son, so then, do not drink wine or strong drink, and do not eat anything unclean, for the boy will be a Nazirite of God from birth until the day of his death.'" ⁸ Then Manoah prayed to the LORD: "Please, the LORD, let the man of God that you sent come back to teach us what we must do with the boy when he is born." ⁹ God did what Manoah asked. His angel came back to the woman while she was in the field. Her husband Manoah was not with her, ¹⁰ The woman quickly ran and told her husband, and said to him, The man has appeared to me, who came to me that day. ¹¹ Manoah arose and followed his wife, and came to the man, and said to him, “Are you the man who spoke to my wife?” He said, “I am.” ¹² Manoah asked, "Now, when what you've said occurs, what is to be the young man's way of life and work?" ¹³ the LORD's angel answered: "Your wife must be sure to do everything I told her. ¹⁴ She should not eat of anything that comes from the vine, or drink wine or strong drink, or eat anything unclean; she should keep all that I commanded." ¹⁵ And Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, "Please stay, and let us prepare a young goat for you." ¹⁶ The angel of the LORD said to Manoah, Though you detain me, I won't eat your food, and if you prepare a burnt offering, you must offer it to the LORD. Manoah didn't know that he was the angel of the LORD. ¹⁷ And Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, "What is your name so that when your words come true we may honor you?" ¹⁸ The angel asked: "Why do you want to know my name? It is ‘Wonderful.’" (Isaiah 9:6) ¹⁹ So Manoah took the young goat with the meal offering, and offered it on the rock to the LORD. Then the angel did an amazing thing as Manoah and his wife watched. ²⁰ And when the flame ascended above the altar, up towards heaven, the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame. When Manoe and his wife saw this, they fell flat with their face to the ground. ²¹ But the angel of the LORD did not appear again to Manoah or to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was the angel of the LORD. ²² whereupon he said to his wife, We shall surely die, for we have seen God. ²³ But his wife said to him, If the LORD wanted to kill us He wouldn't have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering from us, neither would He have shown us all these things, nor would He have told us such things as these. ²⁴ The woman gave birth to a son and named him Samson. The child grew and the LORD blessed him.

¹⁹ They rose up in the morning early, and worshiped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.

¹² The righteous will flourish like palm trees; they will grow like a cedar in Lebanon. ¹³ Planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of our God. ¹⁴ They will still bear fruit even in old age; they will be luxuriant and green.

³⁶ Look, even Elizabeth your relative has conceived a son in her old age, and she who was called barren is in her sixth month.

²⁴ After these days, his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. She declared, ²⁵ “The Lord has done this for me. In these days He has shown me favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.”

²⁸ God blessed them and said to them: "Be fruitful and increase in number. Fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and dominate the birds of the air. Have dominion over every living creature that moves on the ground."

²⁶ No one will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will fulfil the number of your days.

¹⁴ "God will bless you more than any other people. There will not be a male or a female barren among you or your livestock.

²⁰ So it was that she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel. She explained: "I asked the LORD for him."

³ Children are an inheritance from the LORD. They are a blessing from him. ⁴ Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one's youth. ⁵ Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them. They shall not be put to shame when they speak with their enemies in the gate.

⁹ He settles the barren woman in her home, as a joyful mother of children. Praise the LORD.

³⁷ for nothing is impossible with God.

³¹ And now, you shall be with child and give birth to a son, and you shall give him the name Jesus. ³² He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, ³³ and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingdom will never end!” ³⁴ “How can this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” ³⁵ The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God.

²² Then God remembered Rachel. God listened to her and opened her womb.

²¹ Isaac prayed to the LORD for his wife because she was childless. the LORD answered his prayer. His wife Rebekah became pregnant.

¹³ For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother's womb. ¹⁴ I praise you, because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works, and my soul knows it well. ¹⁵ My frame wasn’t hidden from you, when I was made in secret, woven together in the depths of the earth. ¹⁶ Your eyes saw my embryo and all were written in your book; the days ordained for me. Even this before one had taken place.

⁵ “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I sanctified you. I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
