¹⁴ For we must essentially die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither does God respect any person: yet does he devise means, that his banished be not expelled from him.

⁹ As the cloud is consumed and vanishes away: so he that goes down to the grave shall come up no more. ¹⁰ He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more.

²² When a few years are come, then I shall go the way whence I shall not return.

²¹ Before I go whence I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death;

¹⁷ And he shall go before him in the spirit (o. pneuma) and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

¹ There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: ² The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that you do, except God be with him. ³ Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. ⁴ Nicodemus says unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? ⁵ Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, (o. pneuma) he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. ⁶ That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit (o. pneuma) is spirit. (o. pneuma) ⁷ Marvel not that I said unto you, All of you must be born again. ⁸ The wind (o. pneuma) blows where it decides, and you hear the sound thereof, but can not tell whence it comes, and where it goes: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. (o. pneuma) ⁹ Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? ¹⁰ Jesus answered and said unto him, Are you a master of Israel, and know not these things? ¹¹ Verily, verily, I say unto you, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and all of you receive not our witness. ¹² If I have told you earthly things, and all of you believe not, how shall all of you believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? ¹³ And no man has ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. ¹⁴ And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: ¹⁵ That whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. ¹⁶ For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. ¹⁷ For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. ¹⁸ He that believes on him is not condemned: but he that believes not is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. ¹⁹ And this is the condemnation, that light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. ²⁰ For every one that does evil hates the light, neither comes to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. ²¹ But he that does truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. ²² After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized. ²³ And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized. ²⁴ For John was not yet cast into prison. ²⁵ Then there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying. ²⁶ And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with you beyond Jordan, to whom you bare witness, behold, the same baptizes, and all men come to him. ²⁷ John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven. ²⁸ All of you yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. ²⁹ He that has the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled. ³⁰ He must increase, but I must decrease. ³¹ He that comes from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaks of the earth: he that comes from heaven is above all. ³² And what he has seen and heard, that he testifies; and no man receives his testimony. ³³ He that has received his testimony has set to his seal that God is true. ³⁴ For he whom God has sent speaks the words (o. rhema) of God: for God gives not the Spirit (o. pneuma) by measure unto him. ³⁵ The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand. ³⁶ He that believes on the Son has everlasting life: and he that believes not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abides on him.

¹ And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. ² And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? ³ Jesus answered, Neither has this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

⁸ We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

²³ But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.

¹⁴ If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

⁴⁶ And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

³⁹ For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passes away, and comes not again.

⁷ Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

¹⁹ There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: ²⁰ And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, ²¹ And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; ²³ And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and sees Abraham far off, and Lazarus in his bosom. ²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. ²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and you are tormented. ²⁶ And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from behind to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. ²⁷ Then he said, I pray you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house: ²⁸ For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. ²⁹ Abraham says unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. ³⁰ And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. ³¹ And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

¹⁰ But man dies, and wastes away: yea, man gives up the spirit, and where is he? ¹¹ As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decays and dries up: ¹² So man lies down, and rises not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

²⁷ And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
