²⁶ And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

²¹ Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:

¹³ Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you.

²³ And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you.

⁵ Then I will establish the throne of your kingdom upon Israel for ever, as I promised to David your father, saying, There shall not fail you a man upon the throne of Israel.

¹⁵ And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people.

⁶ And said to the judges, Take heed what all of you do: for all of you judge not for man, but for the LORD, who is with you in the judgment. ⁷ Wherefore now let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts.

⁵ And Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court, ⁶ And said, O LORD God of our fathers, are not you God in heaven? and rule not you over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in your hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand you?

¹ Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and made him king in his father's position in Jerusalem.

⁴ O let the nations be glad and sing for joy: for you shall judge the people righteously, and govern the nations upon earth. Selah.

¹⁵ The simple believes every word: but the prudent man looks well to his going.

² A wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart at his left.

²¹ And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way, walk all of you in it, when all of you turn to the right hand, and when all of you turn to the left.

²² Cease all of you from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of ?

¹⁸ And Jesus came and spoke unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

¹¹ Jesus answered, You could have no power at all against me, except it were given you from above: therefore he that delivered me unto you has the greater sin.

³⁸ For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, ³⁹ Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love (o. agape) of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

¹ I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; ² For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

¹ Him that is weak in the faith receive all of you, but not to doubtful disputations.

¹ Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,

³ Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.

²⁷ Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove your foot from evil.

²⁹ Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

¹³ Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; ¹⁴ Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. ¹⁵ For so is the will of God, that with well doing all of you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: ¹⁶ As free, and not using your liberty for a coat of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. ¹⁷ Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

¹ Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. ² Whosoever therefore resists the power, resists the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. ³ For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Will you then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and you shall have praise of the same: ⁴ For he is the minister of God to you for good. But if you do that which is evil, be afraid; for he bears not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that does evil. ⁵ Wherefore all of you must essentially be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. ⁶ For for this cause pay all of you tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. ⁷ Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

²⁵ In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
