⁷ And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached to them, and because he intended to depart the next day; he continued his speech until midnight.

¹ Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices which they had prepared. ² And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. ³ They entered, but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. ⁴ And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: ⁵ They were afraid, and bowed their faces to the earth, and the men said to them, Why do you seek the living among the dead? ⁶ He is not here, but has risen: remember how he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee, ⁷ Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. ⁸ And they remembered his words, ⁹ And returned from the tomb, and told all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest. ¹⁰ They were Mary of Magdala, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. ¹¹ And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they did not believe them. ¹² Then Peter arose, and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering to himself at that which had come to pass. ¹³ And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. ¹⁴ And they talked together of all these things which had happened. ¹⁵ And it came to pass, that, while they were conversing and discussing, Jesus himself drew near, and went along with them. ¹⁶ But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. ¹⁷ And he said to them, What is it that you are discussing with each other as you walk? And they stood still, looking downcast. ¹⁸ And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, Are you the only visitor in Jerusalem who does not know the things which have come to pass there in these days? ¹⁹ And he said to them, What things? And they said to him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: ²⁰ And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. ²¹ But we trusted that it was he who would redeem Israel: and beside all this, today is the third day since these things happened. ²² Yea, and certain women of our company astonished us, for they were at the tomb early; ²³ And they did not find his body. They came back, saying that they had seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. ²⁴ And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said: but him they did not see. ²⁵ Then he said to them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: ²⁶ Was it not necessary for the Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? ²⁷ And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them all the things concerning himself in the scriptures. ²⁸ And they drew near to the village, where they were going: and he acted as though he would have gone farther. ²⁹ But they urged him strongly, saying, Stay with us: for it is getting toward evening, and the day is nearly over. And he went in to stay with them. ³⁰ And it came to pass, as he was at table with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and broke it, and gave it to them. ³¹ And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished out of their sight. ³² And they said to one another, Did not our hearts burn within us, while he talked with us along the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? ³³ They rose up that same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, along with those who were with them, ³⁴ Saying, The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon. ³⁵ And they told what had happened on the road, and how he was recognized by them in the breaking of bread. ³⁶ And as they spoke of this, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, Peace be with you. ³⁷ But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed that they were seeing a spirit. ³⁸ And he said to them, Why are you troubled? and why do doubts arise in your hearts? ³⁹ Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: touch me, and see; for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see that I have. ⁴⁰ And when he had thus spoken, he showed them his hands and his feet. ⁴¹ And while they still did not believe because of joy, and marvelled, he said to them, Have you anything here to eat? ⁴² And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish. ⁴³ And he took it, and ate it before them. ⁴⁴ He said to them, These are the words which I spoke to you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled which are written about me in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms. ⁴⁵ Then he opened their minds, that they might understand the scriptures, ⁴⁶ And said to them, Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer, and rise from the dead on the third day: ⁴⁷ And that repentance for forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. ⁴⁸ You are witnesses of these things. ⁴⁹ And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but stay in the city, until you are clothed with power from on high. ⁵⁰ And he led them out as far as Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. ⁵¹ And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. ⁵² And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy: ⁵³ And were continually in the temple, praising God.

¹ The first day of the week Mary Magdalene came early, when it was yet dark, to the tomb, and saw the stone taken away from the tomb. ² Then she ran, and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to them, They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him. ³ Therefore Peter went forth, with the other disciple, toward the tomb. ⁴ So they both ran together: and the other disciple outran Peter, and came first to the tomb. ⁵ And he stooped down, and looked in, and saw the linen wrappings lying there; but he did not go in. ⁶ Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb, and saw the linen wrappings lying there, ⁷ And the cloth, which had been around his head, was not lying with the linen wrappings, but was rolled up in a place by itself. ⁸ Then the other disciple, who came first to the tomb, went in also and he saw, and believed. ⁹ For as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead. ¹⁰ Then the disciples went away again to their own homes. ¹¹ But Mary stood outside the tomb weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the tomb, ¹² And saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. ¹³ And they said to her, Woman, why do you weep? She said to them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him. ¹⁴ And when she had said this, she turned around, and saw Jesus standing, but did not know that it was Jesus. ¹⁵ Jesus said to her, Woman, why do you weep? whom do you seek? She, supposing him to be the gardener, said to him, Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away. ¹⁶ Jesus said to her, Mary. She turned, and said to him, Rabboni; which is to say, Teacher. ¹⁷ Jesus said to her, Do not hold me; for I have not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say to them, I ascend to my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. ¹⁸ Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things to her. ¹⁹ Then at evening of the same day, the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst, and said to them, Peace be with you. ²⁰ And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. ²¹ Then Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you: as my Father has sent me, even so I send you. ²² And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit: ²³ If you forgive the sins of any one, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any one, they are retained. ²⁴ But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. ²⁵ The other disciples said to him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I shall see in his hands the mark of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. ²⁶ After eight days his disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them: then Jesus came, though the doors were shut, and stood in their midst, and said, Peace be with you. ²⁷ Then he said to Thomas, Reach here with your finger, and behold my hands; and reach here with your hand, and thrust it into my side: and do not be faithless, but believing. ²⁸ And Thomas said to him, My Lord and my God. ²⁹ Jesus said to him, Because you have seen me, you have believed: blessed are those who have not seen, and yet have believed. ³⁰ Now Jesus performed many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: ³¹ But these are written, that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you might have life through his name.

² Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay aside and save something, as he has prospered, that there need be no collections when I come.
