³ Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ⁴ Blessed are those who mourn: for they shall be comforted.

¹⁶ Confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The fervent prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

² And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, ³ Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ⁴ Blessed are those who mourn: for they shall be comforted. ⁵ Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. ⁶ Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness: for they shall be filled. ⁷ Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. ⁸ Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. ⁹ Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called sons of God. ¹⁰ Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ¹¹ Blessed are you, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. ¹² Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

⁸ For we would not have you ignorant of our trouble, brethren, which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed down beyond measure, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of life. ⁹ Indeed, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead: ¹⁰ Who has delivered us from so deadly a peril, and who will deliver us: we trust in him, that he will deliver us again,

²⁰ I have been crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

⁶ But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

²⁴ Truly, truly, I say to you, Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone: but if it dies, it brings forth much fruit.
