¹⁸ Now the birth of Jesus Christ happened in this way: When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.

⁶ But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. ⁷ Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask. ⁸ And she, having been prompted by her mother, said, Give me John the Baptist's head here on a platter. ⁹ And the king was sorry: nevertheless, because of his oath and his guests, he commanded that it be given to her. ¹⁰ And he sent, and had John beheaded in the prison. ¹¹ And his head was brought on a platter, and given to the girl: and she brought it to her mother. ¹² And his disciples came, and took the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

⁷ Because the mind set on the flesh is hostile to God: for it is not subject to the law of God, indeed it cannot be.

⁵ One man esteems one day above another: another esteems every day alike. Let each man be fully convinced in his own mind.

¹ Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. ² For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. ³ For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God did, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, as an offering for sin; condemning sin in the flesh: ⁴ That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk in the ways of the flesh, but in the ways of the Spirit. ⁵ For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh; but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. ⁶ Now the mind set on the flesh is death; but the mind set on the spirit is life and peace. ⁷ Because the mind set on the flesh is hostile to God: for it is not subject to the law of God, indeed it cannot be. ⁸ So then those who are in the flesh cannot please God. ⁹ But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. Now if any man does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to him. ¹⁰ And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is alive because of righteousness. ¹¹ And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead shall also give life to your mortal bodies by his Spirit who dwells in you. ¹² Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, but not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. ¹³ For if you live according to the flesh, you shall die: but if through the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you shall live. ¹⁴ For as many as are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God.

⁸ For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: ⁹ Not because of works, lest any man should boast.
