⁵ »If I have walked in falsehood or my foot has hurried after deceit ⁶ »let God weigh me on honest scales and he will know that I am blameless.

¹ A wise son heeds his father's instruction (discipline). A scoffer does not listen to discipline (reproof). ² A man eats well by the fruit of his mouth. Transgressors eat violence. ³ He who keeps his mouth (watches what he says) keeps his life. He who opens wide his lips (speaks thoughtlessly) will have destruction. ⁴ The lazy man desires and has nothing. The diligent man will be made rich. ⁵ A righteous man hates lying. A wicked man is loathsome and shameful. ⁶ Righteousness keeps the upright in the way. Wickedness subverts the sinner. ⁷ There is one who claims to be rich, yet has nothing. There is one who claims to be poor, yet has great riches. ⁸ The ransom of a man's life is his riches. The poor [in spirit] does not listen to rebuke. ⁹ The light of the righteous rejoices but the lamp of the wicked will be put out. ¹⁰ Pride brings contention, but wisdom is with the well advised. ¹¹ Wealth gained by dishonesty will be diminished. He who gathers by labor will increase. ¹² Expectation deferred makes the heart sick. When the desire comes, it is a tree of life. ¹³ The one who despises the word will experience bad consequences (be destroyed). He who respects the commandment will be rewarded. ¹⁴ The law of the wise is a fountain of life to depart from the snares of death. ¹⁵ Good understanding gives favor. The way of transgressors is hard. ¹⁶ Every prudent man acts with knowledge. A fool displays his folly. ¹⁷ A wicked messenger falls into adversity. A faithful ambassador brings healing. ¹⁸ Poverty and shame come to all who reject discipline. He who accepts reproof will be honored. ¹⁹ Desire accomplished is sweetness to life. It is an abomination to fools to depart from evil. ²⁰ The one who walks with wise men will be wise. A companion of fools will be destroyed. ²¹ Adversity pursues sinners. The righteous will be repaid with goodness. ²² A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children. The wealth of the sinner is preserved for the righteous. ²³ Abundant foods is in the fallow ground of the poor. There is waste because of a lack of justice. ²⁴ He who spares the rod (authority) hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines (instructs) him promptly. ²⁵ The righteous eats to satisfaction. The belly of the wicked is in need.

¹² »Do for others the same as you would have them to do for you. That is the meaning of the Law and the Prophets.

²⁶ They should come to their senses out of the snare of the Devil. He has taken them captive and they do his will.

¹ Be followers (imitators) of me, even as I also am of Christ.

²⁸ He that steals must steal no more. Let him labor, working with his hands the thing that is good, that he may have something to give to someone in need.

¹⁹ They promise them freedom, while they are bondservants of corruption. A man is brought into bondage by one and enslaved by another.

²³ »Can Ethiopians change the color of their skin or leopards change their spots? Can you do good when you are taught to do wrong?

³⁵ »In all things I gave you an example. You by laboring should help the weak. Remember the words of the Lord Jesus: It is more blessed to give than to receive.«

²⁰ My son, pay attention to my words. Incline your ear (extend your hearing) to my sayings. ²¹ Do not let them leave your sight. Hold them in the midst of your heart! ²² For they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh. ²³ Guard your heart with all diligence for out of it come the source of life. ²⁴ Put away from you a deceitful mouth. Get rid of devious speech. ²⁵ Let your eyes look straight ahead. Let you own eyes gaze (be fixed) straight in front of you. ²⁶ Ponder the path of your feet. Let all your ways be established (firm). ²⁷ Do not turn to the right or to the left. Remove your foot from evil.

¹ Therefore imitate God like beloved children.

²⁵ Not forsaking the gathering of ourselves together, as the manner of some is, but exhorting one another, and even more, as you see the day approaching.

²⁰ »That which comes out of the man defiles the man. ²¹ »It is from the heart that evil thoughts come such as: fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, ²² coveting, wickedness, deceit, loose conduct, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. ²³ »All these evil things come from within and defile the man.«

¹² All things are lawful to me, but all things are not expedient (profitable) (good). All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the authority (power) (control) of anything.

¹³ No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to man. God is faithful and he will not allow you to be tempted beyond your limits. He will make a way out, that you will be able to endure it.

² Do not be conformed to this world (religious, social, political, and economic arrangement). But be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Prove what is the good, acceptable, and perfect will of God.
