Bible verses about "debtors" | NSB

Matthew 18:23-33

23 »The kingdom of heaven is like a king who went over his accounts with his servants. 24 »First, one came to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25 »He was not able to make payment. So his lord gave orders for him to be sold. His wife, sons, and daughters were all to be sold along with every possession. The money would be used for payment of what he owed. 26 »So the servant fell on his face out of respect. He said: ‘Lord, give me time to make payment and I will pay everything.’ 27 »Being moved with pity, the lord let him go, and made him free of the debt. 28 »Then that servant met another servant who was in debt to him for one hundred denarii. He took him by the throat, saying, ‘Pay your debt now.’ 29 »That servant fell down before him, saying, ‘Give me time and I will make payment to you.’ 30 »He would not give him time. He put him into prison till he paid the debt. 31 »When the other servants saw what happened, they were very sad. They told their lord what had been done. 32 »His lord sent for him, and said: ‘Evil servant; I made you free of all that debt, because of your request to me. 33 »‘Should you [also] show mercy to your fellow servant the same way I showed mercy to you?’

Psalms 37:21

21 The wicked borrows and does not pay back. But the righteous is gracious and gives.

Exodus 20:1-17

1 God spoke all these words: 2 »I am Jehovah your God, who brought you out of slavery in Egypt. 3 »Do not have any other god. 4 »Do not make your own carved idols or statues that represent any creature in the sky, on the earth, or in the water. 5 »Do not worship them or serve them. I, Jehovah your God, am a God demanding exclusive devotion. (I do not tolerate rivals.) I will not share your affection with any other god. I punish children for their parents’ sins to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me. 6 »I show mercy (loving kindness) to thousands of generations of those who love me and obey my commandments. 7 »Never use the name of Jehovah your God in a false and evil way. Jehovah will make sure that anyone who is false, evil, careless and vain with his name will be punished. 8 »Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. 9 »You have six days to do all your work. 10 »The seventh day is a Sabbath dedicated to Jehovah your God. Do not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you. 11 »Jehovah made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them in six days. He rested on the seventh day. Therefore Jehovah blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. 12 »Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land Jehovah your God gives you. 13 »Do not murder. 14 »Do not commit adultery. 15 »Do not steal. 16 »Do not (lie) accuse anyone falsely. 17 »Do not covet (desire) another man’s house. Do not desire his wife, his slaves, his cattle, his donkeys, or anything else that he owns.

Romans 13:1-14

1 Let every person be subject to superior authorities. For there is no authority except by God. God allows the authorities to serve in their positions. 2 Whoever opposes the authority resists the ordinance of God. Those who resist will receive judgment. 3 For rulers are objects of fear, not to good works, but to the evil. Will you not have respect for the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from it. 4 He is the minister of God to you for good. But if you do that which is evil, be afraid for he does not bear the sword in vain. He is the minister of God, an avenger to execute wrath upon him that does evil. 5 You must be in subjection, not only because of that wrath, but also for the sake of your conscience. 6 That is why you pay taxes. They are God’s ministers continually serving this very purpose. 7 Render therefore to all their due. Provide tribute to whom tribute is due. Give custom to whom custom is owed. Render fear to whom fear is owed and offer honor to whom honor is deserved. 8 Owe no man any thing but to love one another. He that loves another has fulfilled (obeyed) the law. 9 For the Law code says: You must not commit adultery, you must not murder, you must not steal, you must not bear false witness, and you must not covet. If there is any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying; namely, you must love your neighbor as yourself. 10 Love works no ill to his neighbor. Therefore love is the law’s fulfillment. 11 You know the time. It is the hour for you to awake from sleep. Now our salvation is nearer than when we became believers. 12 The night is far along and the day is at hand. Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. 13 Let us walk honestly as in the daytime, not in rioting and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and loose conduct, not in strife and jealousy. 14 Put on (live like) (clothe yourself with) the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not make provision for the desires of the flesh.

Psalms 37:21-22

21 The wicked borrows and does not pay back. But the righteous is gracious and gives. 22 Those blessed by him will inherit the land. But those cursed by him will be destroyed.

Matthew 5:26

26 »Take it from me; you will stay in jail until you pay the very last penny of your fine.
