¹⁹ These are their names: Caleb son of Jephunneh, from the tribe of Judah,

¹⁵ The sons of Caleb son of Jephunneh: Iru, Elah and Naam. The son of Elah: Kenaz. ¹⁶ For this reason it is by faith that it may be according to grace (divine influence) (loving-kindness). The promise may be sure to all descendants! This is not only to that which is of the law, but to that also which is by the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.

⁶ Caleb, son of Jephunneh, from the tribe of Judah;

³⁸ Of all the men who went to explore the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.

⁶³ Moses and the priest Eleazar added up the total number of Israelites on the plains of Moab near the Jordan River across from Jericho. ⁶⁴ Not a single one of the Israelites Moses and the priest Aaron had counted in the Desert of Sinai were there. ⁶⁵ Jehovah said: »They must all die in the desert wilderness.« The only ones left were Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

³⁰ »‘I raised my hand and swore an oath to give you this land to live in. But none of you will enter it except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

⁶ At the same time, two of those who had explored the land, Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, tore their clothes in despair. ⁷ They said to the entire congregation of Israel: »The land we explored is very good. ⁸ »If Jehovah is pleased with us, he will take us there and give us that rich and fertile land. ⁹ »Do not rebel against Jehovah. Do not be afraid of the people who live there. We will conquer them easily. Jehovah is with us and has defeated the gods who protected them. Do not be afraid.«

¹³ To Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a part among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of Jehovah to Joshua, even the city of Arba the father of Anak, which city is Hebron. ¹⁴ From Hebron Caleb drove out the three sons of Anak, Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai. ¹⁵ He went to the inhabitants of Debir. The name of Debir previously was Kirjath-sepher. ¹⁶ Caleb said: »I will give Achsah my daughter in marriage to the man who captures it and kills Kirjath-sepher.«

¹¹ »None of the people twenty years old or older, who came from Egypt, will see the land I promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob with an oath. This is because they did not wholeheartedly follow me. ¹² »Only Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun will get to see the land. This is because they wholeheartedly followed Jehovah. ¹³ »Jehovah’s anger blazed against the Israelites. Therefore he made them wander in the desert for forty years until the whole generation of those who had done evil in Jehovah’s presence was gone.

²⁶ They returned to Moses, Aaron, and the whole congregation of Israel at Kadesh in the Desert of Paran. They gave their report and showed them the fruit from the land. ²⁷ This is their report to Moses: »We went to the land where you sent us. It really is a land flowing with milk and honey. Here is some of its fruit. ²⁸ »The people who live there are strong. The cities have walls and are very large. We even saw the descendants of Anak there. ²⁹ »The Amalekites live in the Negev. The Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the mountain region. The Canaanites live along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and all along the Jordan River.« ³⁰ Caleb told the people to be quiet and listen to Moses. Caleb said: »Let us go now and take possession of the land. We should be more than able to conquer it.«

⁷ »I was forty years old when Moses the servant of Jehovah sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land. I brought him word again as it was in my heart. ⁸ »Nevertheless my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people dissolve. But I wholly followed Jehovah my God. ⁹ »Moses swore on that day, saying: ‘Surely the land where your feet have trodden shall be your inheritance, and your children’s from generation to generation, because you have completely followed Jehovah my God. ¹⁰ »‘Jehovah has kept me alive, as he said, these forty-five years, even since Jehovah spoke this word to Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness. Now I am this day eighty-five years old.

¹ ([Psalm of David]) Vindicate me, O Jehovah, because I have walked with (a life-style of) integrity and I have trusted you without wavering. ² Examine me, O Jehovah, and test me. Look closely (deeply) into my heart and mind. ³ Your loving-kindness is in front of me. I walk in your truth. ⁴ I do not sit with deceitful men, and I will not be found among hypocrites. ⁵ I hate the assembly of evildoers and will not sit with wicked people. ⁶ I will wash my hands in innocence. I will walk around your altar, O Jehovah. ⁷ Let me publish with a voice of thanksgiving and recount all your wonders (miracles). ⁸ O Jehovah, I love the place where you live, the home (spiritual retreat) (heart and mind) where your glory dwells. ⁹ Do not sweep me away with hardened sinners or my life along with bloodthirsty people. ¹⁰ Evil schemes are in their hands. Their right hands are full of bribes. ¹¹ As for me, I walk in my integrity. Redeem (ransom) (rescue) me, and show me favor. ¹² My feet stand on level ground. I will praise Jehovah in the congregation.

²⁴ »My servant Caleb has a different attitude and has wholeheartedly followed me, I will bring him to the land he already explored. His descendants will possess it.

⁶ Then the children of Judah came to Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said to him: »You know what Jehovah said to Moses the man of God concerning you and me in Kadesh-barnea. ⁷ »I was forty years old when Moses the servant of Jehovah sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land. I brought him word again as it was in my heart. ⁸ »Nevertheless my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people dissolve. Now I am this day eighty-five years old. ¹¹ »‘So far I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength is now, for war, both to go out, and to come in. ¹² »‘Now therefore give me this mountain. This is where Jehovah spoke that day. You heard about the Anakims that day. Their cities were large and fortified and Jehovah helped me drive them out just as Jehovah said.« ¹³ Joshua blessed Caleb the son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron for an inheritance. ¹⁴ Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite to this day, because that he wholly followed Jehovah the God of Israel. ¹⁵ Hebron was previously named Kirjath-arba. Arba was a great man among the Anakims. The land (and its people) had rest from war.
