¹⁸ Discipline your son, for there is hope; do not be a willing party to his death.

⁸ My son, listen to your father's instruction, and do not forsake your mother's teaching: ⁹ for they will be a garland to grace your head, and a necklace around your neck.

³ neither as lording it over those entrusted to you, but making yourselves examples to the flock.

⁷ If you are enduring discipline, God is dealing with you as children. For what child is there whom his father does not discipline? ⁸ But if you are without discipline, of which all have been made partakers, then you are illegitimate, and not children. ⁹ Furthermore, we had earthly fathers who disciplined us, and we paid them respect. Should we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live? ¹⁰ For they indeed, for a few days, disciplined us as seemed good to them; but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness. ¹¹ All discipline seems for the moment painful, not joyful; yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been exercised thereby.

⁶ These words, which I command you this day, shall be on your heart; ⁷ and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up. ⁸ You shall bind them for a sign on your hand, and they shall be for symbols between your eyes. ⁹ You shall write them on the door posts of your house, and on your gates.

¹⁷ Correct your son, and he will give you peace; yes, he will bring delight to your soul.

¹³ Do not withhold correction from a child. If you punish him with the rod, he will not die.

³ Look, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is a reward.

¹⁵ The rod of correction gives wisdom, but a child left to himself causes shame to his mother.

⁷ in all things showing yourself an example of good works. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness,

²⁴ One who spares the rod hates his son, but one who loves him is careful to discipline him.

²¹ Fathers, do not provoke your children, so that they won't be discouraged.

²⁰ Joshua set up those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, in Gilgal. ²¹ He spoke to the children of Israel, saying, "When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, 'What do these stones mean?' ²² Then you shall let your children know, saying, 'Israel came over this Jordan on dry land. ²³ For the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan from before you, until you had passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Sea at the End, which he dried up from before us, until we had passed over; ²⁴ that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty; that you may fear the LORD your God forever.'"

⁶ Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

⁴ And fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
