¹⁸ Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

²⁴ Do not befriend a hot-tempered man, and do not associate with one who harbors anger: ²⁵ lest you learn his ways, and ensnare your soul.

¹⁶ By their fruits you will know them. Do you gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles?

¹⁵ "If your brother sins against you, go, show him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained back your brother. ¹⁶ But if he does not listen, take one or two more with you, that at the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. ¹⁷ If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. If he refuses to hear the church also, let him be to you as an unbeliever or a tax collector.

¹⁹ This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light, because their works were evil.

⁴ And fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

¹ My little children, I write these things to you so that you may not sin. If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous. ² And he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world. ³ This is how we know that we know him: if we keep his commandments. ⁴ One who says, "I know him," and does not keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. ⁵ But whoever keeps his word, God's love has truly been perfected in him. This is how we know that we are in him: ⁶ he who says he remains in him ought himself also to walk just like he walked. ⁷ Beloved, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard. ⁸ Again, I write a new commandment to you, which is true in him and in you; because the darkness is passing away, and the true light already shines. ⁹ He who says he is in the light and hates his brother, is in the darkness even until now. ¹⁰ He who loves his brother remains in the light, and there is no occasion for stumbling in him. ¹¹ But he who hates his brother is in the darkness, and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. ¹² I write to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake. ¹³ I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young people, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, little children, because you know the Father. ¹⁴ I have written to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young people, because you are strong, and the word of God remains in you, and you have overcome the evil one. ¹⁵ Do not love the world, neither the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father's love is not in him. ¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not the Father's, but is the world's. ¹⁷ The world is passing away with its lusts, but he who does God's will remains forever. ¹⁸ Little children, these are the end times, and as you heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have arisen. By this we know that it is the final hour. ¹⁹ They went out from us, but they did not belong to us; for if they had belonged to us, they would have continued with us. But they left, that they might be revealed that none of them belong to us. ²⁰ But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know. ²¹ I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth. ²² Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. ²³ Whoever denies the Son, the same does not have the Father. He who confesses the Son has the Father also. ²⁴ As for you, let that remain in you which you heard from the beginning. If that which you heard from the beginning remains in you, you also will remain in the Son, and in the Father. ²⁵ This is the promise which he promised us, the everlasting life. ²⁶ These things I have written to you concerning those who would lead you astray. ²⁷ As for you, the anointing which you received from him remains in you, and you do not need for anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is no lie, and even as it taught you, you remain in him. ²⁸ Now, little children, remain in him, that when he appears, we may have boldness, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. ²⁹ If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone also who practices righteousness is born of him.

There is no fear of God before his eyes. ² For he flatters himself in his own eyes, too much to detect and hate his sin. ³ The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit. He has ceased to be wise and to do good.

¹⁶ For they do not sleep, unless they do evil. Their sleep is taken away, unless they make someone fall.

¹⁶ They profess that they know God, but by their works they deny him, being abominable, disobedient, and unfit for any good work.

¹² Before destruction the heart of man is proud, but before honor is humility.

¹⁷ Now I appeal to you, brothers, look out for those who are causing the divisions and occasions of stumbling, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and turn away from them. ¹⁸ For those who are such do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own belly; and by their smooth and flattering speech, they deceive the hearts of the innocent. ¹⁹ For your obedience has become known to all. I rejoice therefore over you. But I desire to have you wise in that which is good, but innocent in that which is evil.

¹ If there is therefore any exhortation in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any tender mercies and compassion, ² make my joy full, by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind; ³ doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself; ⁴ each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others. ⁵ Have this in your mind, which was also in Christ Jesus, ⁶ who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God a thing to be grasped, ⁷ but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men. ⁸ And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, yes, the death of the cross. ⁹ Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave to him the name which is above every name; ¹⁰ that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth, ¹¹ and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. ¹² So then, my beloved, even as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with awe and reverence. ¹³ For it is God who works in you both to will and to work, for his good pleasure. ¹⁴ Do all things without murmurings and disputes, ¹⁵ that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you are seen as lights in the world, ¹⁶ holding up the word of life; that I may have something to boast in the day of Christ, that I did not run in vain nor labor in vain. ¹⁷ Yes, and if I am poured out on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice, and rejoice with you all. ¹⁸ In the same way, you also rejoice, and rejoice with me. ¹⁹ But I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered up when I know how you are doing. ²⁰ For I have no one else like-minded, who will truly care about you. ²¹ For they all seek their own, not the things of Jesus Christ. ²² But you know the proof of him, that, as a child serves a father, so he served with me in furtherance of the Good News. ²³ Therefore I hope to send him at once, as soon as I see how it will go with me. ²⁴ But I trust in the Lord that I myself also will come shortly. ²⁵ But I counted it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker, fellow soldier, and your apostle and servant of my need; ²⁶ since he longed for you all, and was very troubled, because you had heard that he was sick. ²⁷ For indeed he was sick, nearly to death, but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, that I might not have sorrow on sorrow. ²⁸ I have sent him all the more eagerly, therefore, so that when you see him again you may rejoice, and that I may be less anxious. ²⁹ Receive him therefore in the Lord with all joy, and hold such in honor, ³⁰ because for the work of Christ he came near to death, risking his life to supply that which was lacking in your service toward me.

⁵ Likewise, you younger ones, be subject to the elder. Yes, all of you clothe yourselves with humility, towards one another; for God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. ⁶ Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time;

¹ But know this, that in the last days, grievous times will come. ² For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, ³ unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, hateful of good, ⁴ traitors, headstrong, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God; ⁵ holding a form of godliness, but having denied the power thereof. Turn away from these, also. ⁶ For among them are those who crawl into households and take captive weak-willed women weighed down with sins, led away by various passions and pleasures, ⁷ always learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
