Bible verses about "motives" | NHEB

Genesis 4:7

7 If you do well, will it not be lifted up? If you do not do well, sin lies in wait at the door. It desires to control you, but you must rule over it."

Colossians 3:17

17 Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father, through him.

1 John 4:1

1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

13 This is the end of the matter. All has been heard. Fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man. 14 For God will bring every work into judgment, with every hidden thing, whether it is good, or whether it is evil.

Proverbs 16:2

2 All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weighs the motives.

1 John 3:12

12 unlike Cain, who was of the evil one, and killed his brother. Why did he kill him? Because his works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

James 4:1-17

1 Where do conflicts and quarrels among you come from? Do they not come from your passions that war in your members? 2 You lust, and do not have. You kill, covet, and cannot obtain. You fight and make war. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask, and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it for your pleasures. 4 You adulterers and adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, "The Spirit which he made to dwell in us yearns jealously"? 6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. 7 Be subject therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament, mourn, and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you. 11 Do not speak against one another, brothers. He who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law, but a judge. 12 Only one is the lawgiver and judge, who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor? 13 Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow let us go into this city, and spend a year there, trade, and make a profit." 14 Whereas you do not know what tomorrow will be like. What is your life? For you are a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. 15 For you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will both live, and do this or that." 16 But now you glory in your boasting. All such boasting is evil. 17 To him therefore who knows to do good, and does not do it, to him it is sin.

1 Samuel 16:7

7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For humans do not see as God sees, for humans look at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart."

1 Timothy 1:5

5 but the goal of this command is love, out of a pure heart and a good conscience and unfeigned faith;

1 Corinthians 4:5

5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one will get his praise from God.

Matthew 6:1

1 "Be careful that you do not do your righteousness before people, to be seen by them, or else you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

Philippians 2:3

3 doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself; 4 But even as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News, so we speak; not as pleasing people, but God, who tests our hearts.

Galatians 1:10

10 For am I now seeking the favor of people, or of God? Or am I striving to please people? For if I were still pleasing people, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Proverbs 21:2

2 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the hearts.

Matthew 6:1-18

1 "Be careful that you do not do your righteousness before people, to be seen by them, or else you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2 Therefore when you practice charitable giving, do not sound a trumpet before yourself, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may get glory from people. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you practice charitable giving, do not let your left hand know what your right hand does, 4 so that your charitable giving may be in secret, then your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 5 "And when you pray, you are not to be as the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I tell you, they have received their reward. 6 But you, when you pray, enter into your inner chamber, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 7 And in praying, do not use vain repetitions, as the unbelievers do; for they think that they will be heard for their much speaking. 8 Therefore do not be like them, for your Father knows what things you need, before you ask him. 9 Therefore, you should pray this way: 'Our Father in heaven, holy be your name. 10 Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.' 14 "For if you forgive people their wrongdoing, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive people, neither will your Father forgive your wrongdoing. 16 "Moreover when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with sad faces. For they disfigure their faces, that they may be seen by people to be fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. 17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face; 18 so that you are not seen by people to be fasting, but by your Father who is in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.
