His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they came together she was discovered to be pregnant by the holy Spirit. ¹⁹ As Joseph her husband was a just man but unwilling to disgrace her, he resolved to divorce her secretly; ²⁰ but after he had planned this, there appeared an angel of the Lord to him in a dream saying, "Joseph, son of David, fear not to take Mary your wife home, for what is begotten in her comes from the holy Spirit. ²¹ She will bear a son, and you will call him 'Jesus,' for he will save his people from their sins." ²² All this happened for the fulfilment of what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: ²³ The maiden will conceive and bear a son, and his name will be called Immanuel (which may be translated, God is with us). ²⁴ So on waking from sleep Joseph did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him; he took his wife home, ²⁵ but he did not live with her as a husband till she bore a son, whom he called Jesus.

⁴ and studying myths and interminable genealogies; such studies bear upon speculations rather than on the divine order which belongs to faith.

⁹ But avoid foolish controversy, and let genealogies and dissensions and strife over the Law alone, for these are fruitless and futile.
