³ and I sayde vnto them: let not the gates of Ierusalem be opened vntil the sonne be whole. And whyle they are yet standyng in the watche, the dores shal be shut and barred. And there were certayne citesins of Ierusalem appoynted to be watchmen euerye one in hys watche, and aboute his house.

¹¹ The heauy burthen of Duma. One of Seir cryed vnto me: Watche man what hast thou espyed by nyght, whatcheman what hast thou espyed by nyght. ¹² The watchman answered: The daye breaketh on, and the nyght is commyng: Yf youre request be earnest, then aske and come agayne.

³ The watchemen that go aboute the citie, founde me. Sawe ye not him whom my soule loueth?

³⁴ Blessed is the man that heareth me, watchynge dayly at my gates, & geuynge attendaunce at the postes of my dores.

¹ Agayne, the worde of the Lorde came vnto me, sayinge: ² Thou sonne of man, Speake to the children of thy people, & tell them: When I sende a swearde vpon a lande, yf the people of the lande take a man of their countre, & set him to be their watchman, ³ the same man (whan he seyth the sweard come vpon the lande) shal blowe the trompet, and warne the people. ⁴ If a man now heare the noyse of the trompet, and wil not be warned, and the swearde come and take him awaye: his bloude shall be vpon hys owne head: ⁵ for he hearde the sound of the trompet, and wolde not take hede: therfore hys bloude be vpon hym. But yf he wyll receyue warninge, he shall saue hys lyfe. ⁶ Agayne, yf the watch man se the swearde come and shewe it not wyth the trompet, so that the people is not warned: yf the sweard come then and take any man from amonge them, the same shall be taken awaye in hys owne sinne but hys bloude wyll I requyre of the watchemans hande. ⁷ And now (O thou sonne of man) I haue made the a watcheman vnto the house of Israell: that where as thou hearest anye thynge oute of my mouthe, thou mayest warne them on my behalfe. ⁸ If I say vnto the wicked thou wycked, thou shalte surelye dye: & thou geuest hym not warnynge, that he maye bewarre of his vngodly waye: then shall the wicked dye in hys owne synne, but hys bloude wyll I requyre of thy hand. ⁹ Neuertheles yf thou warne the wycked of hys waye, to turne from it, where as he yet will not be turned from it, then shall he dye because of hys synne, but thou haste delyuered thy soule.

¹ And the worde of the Lorde came vnto me, saying: ² Thou sonne of man, prophecy against the shepeherdes of Israel, prophecye and speake vnto them: Thus sayeth the Lorde God: Wo be vnto the shepeherdes of Israel, that fede them selues. Shulde not the shepeherdes fede the flockes? ³ Ye haue eaten vp the fatte, ye haue clothed you wyth the wol: the best fedde haue ye slayne, but the flocke haue ye not noryshed. ⁴ The weake haue ye not holden vp, the sicke haue ye not healed: the broken haue ye not bounde together, the oute castes haue ye not brought agayne: the lost haue ye not soughte, but churlishly and cruellye haue ye ruled them. ⁵ Thus are they scatred here and there wythoute a shepherde: yea al the beastes of the felde deuoure them, and they go astraye. ⁶ My shepe go wandrynge vpon all mountaynes, and vpon euerye hye hyl. Yea they be scatred abroade in al feldes, and there is no man, that careth for them, or seketh after them. ⁷ Therfore O ye shepeherdes, heare the worde of the Lorde. ⁸ Thus sayth the Lorde God: As trulye as I lyue, for so much as my shepe are robbed, & deuoured of all the wylde beastes of the felde, hauynge no shepherde: and seinge that my shepeherdes take no regarde of my shepe, but fede them selues onely, and not my shepe: ⁹ Therfore heare the worde of the Lorde O ye shepherdes: ¹⁰ Thus sayth the Lord God: Beholde, I my self wyll vpon the shepherdes and requyre my shepe from theyr handes, and make them ceasse from fedynge of my shepe: yea the shepherdes shall fede them selues no more: For I wyll delyuer my shepe oute of theyr mouthes, so that they shall not deuoure them after this. ¹¹ For thus sayth the Lord god: Beholde, I will loke to my shepe my selfe, & seke them. ¹² Lyke as a shepherde amonge the flocke seketh after the shepe that are scatered abroade, euen so wyll I seke after my shepe, & gather them together oute of all places, wher they haue bene scatred in the cloudy & darcke daye. ¹³ I wyll brynge them oute from all people, and gather them together oute of all landes. I wyll brynge them into theyr owne land, and fede them vpon the mountaynes of Israel, by the ryuers, and in all the places of the countre. ¹⁴ I wil fede them in ryght good pastures, and vpon the hye mountaynes of Israell shal there foldes be. There shall they lye in a good folde, and in a fat pasture shall they fede, euen vpon the mountaynes of Israel. ¹⁵ I wil fede my shepe my selfe, and brynge them to theyr rest sayeth the Lorde GOD. ¹⁶ Suche as be loste, wyll I seke: suche as go astraye, wyll I bryng agayn: suche as be wounded, wil I bynde vp: suche as be weake, wyll I make stronge: suche as be fat and well lyking, those wil I preserue, and fede them with the thynge that is laufull. ¹⁷ And as for you (O my shepe) sayeth the Lorde God: I wyl put a difference amonge the shepe, amonge the wethers & the goates. ¹⁸ Was it not ynough for you to eat vp the good pasture, but ye must treade downe the residue of your pasture with your fete also? Was it not ynough for you to drink cleare water, but ye must trouble the resydue also with your fete? ¹⁹ Thus my shepe muste be fayne to eate the thynge, that ye haue troden doune with your fete, & to drincke it, that ye with youre fete haue befyled. ²⁰ Therfore, thus saieth the Lorde God vnto them: Beholde, I wyll seuer the fatte shepe from the leane: ²¹ for so muche as ye haue shot the weake shepe vpon the sydes & shoulders, and runne vpon them with youre hornes, so longe tyll ye haue vtterlye scatred them abroad ²² I will helpe my shepe, so that they shall no more be spoyled: yea, I wyll discerne one shepe from another. ²³ I wyll rayse vp vnto them one onelye shepeherde: euen my seruaunt Dauid, he shall fede them, and he shall be theyr shepherde. ²⁴ I the Lorde wyll be theyr God, and my seruaunte Dauid shall be their prince: Euen I the Lorde haue spoken it. ²⁵ Moreouer, I wyll make a couenaunte of yeare with them, and driue al euyl beastes out of the lande: so that they maye dwell safelye in the wyldernes, and slepe in the wooddes. ²⁶ Good fortune and prosperyte wil I geue them, and vnto all that be rounde aboute my hyll. A prosperous shower and rayne wil I sende them in due season, ²⁷ that the trees in the wood maye brynge forthe theyr frutes, & the grounde her increase. They shalbe safe in theyr lande, & shall knowe, that I am the Lorde, whiche haue broken theyr yocke, and delyuered them oute of the handes of those, that helde them in subieccyon. ²⁸ They shal no more be spoyled of the Heathen, nor deuoured with the beastes of the lande: but safely shall they dwell, and no man shall fraye them. ²⁹ I wyll set vp an excellente plante for them, so that they shal suffre no more hunger in the lande, neither beare the reprofe of the Heathen any more. ³⁰ Thus shal they vnderstand that I the Lorde theyr God am with them, & that they (euen the house of Israel) are my people, sayeth the Lorde God. ³¹ Ye men are my flocke, ye are the shepe of my pasture: and I am youre God, sayeth the Lorde God.

¹⁷ Obeye them that haue the ouersyghte of you, and submyt your selues to them, for they watche for youre soules, euen as they that muste geue accomptes: that they maye do it wyth ioye, and not wyth griefe. For that is an vnprofytable thynge for you.

⁹ Neuertheles we made our prayer vnto our God, and set watchemen vpon the wall daye & nyght ouer agaynst them.

⁵ Yea sone make ready the table (sayde this voyce) kepe the watch, eate & dryncke. Vp ye Captaynes, take you to youre shild, ⁶ for thus the Lorde hath charged me: go thy waye, and set a watche man, that he may tel what he seith. ⁷ And when he had wayted dylygentlye, he sawe two horsemen: the one rydynge vpon an Asse, the other vpon a Camel. ⁸ And the lyon cryed: Lorde, I haue stande waytynge all the whole daye, and haue kepte my watch all the night. ⁹ Wyth that came there one rydinge vpon a charet, whyche answered, and sayde: Babilon is fallen, she is turned vp syde doune and al the ymages of her Godes are smytten to the grounde. ¹⁰ This (O my felowe thresshers and fanners) haue I hearde of the Lorde of Hostes the God of Israel, to shewe it vnto you. ¹¹ The heauy burthen of Duma. ⁶ And when it is tyme, the watche men vpon the mounte of Ephraim shall crye: Aryse, let vs go vp vnto Syon to oure Lorde God,

⁸ Thy watchemen shall lyft vp theyr voyce with loude voyce shall they preache of him: for they shall se him presente, when the Lorde shall come agayne to Syon.

¹² Set vp tokens vpon the walles of Babylon, make youre watche stronge, set youre watche men in araye, yea holde preuye watches, & yet for all that shall the Lorde go forth with the deuyce, whiche he hath taken vpon them that dwell in Babylon.

¹ I stode vpon my watch, & set me vpon my bulworke, to loke & se, what he wolde saye vnto me, & what answere I shuld geue him that reproueth me. ² But the Lord aunswered me, and sayde: Wryte the vysyon planely vpon thy tables, that who so cometh by, maye rede it, ³ for the vysyon is yet farre of for a tyme, but at the last it shal come to passe & not fayle. And thoughe he tarye, yet wayte thou for hym, for in very dede he wyll come, & not be slacke ⁴ Beholde, who so wyll not beleue, hys soule shall not prospere: but the iuste shall lyue by hys fayth. ⁵ Lyke as the wyne disceyueth the dronkarde, euen so the proud shall fayle and not endure. He openeth hys desyre wyde vp as the hell, & is as vnsacyale as death. All Heathen gathered he to hym, and heapeth vnto hym all people. ⁶ But shall not all these take vp a prouerbe agaynst hym, & mocke hym with a byworde & saye: Wo vnto hym that heapeth vp other mens goodes? Howe longe wyll he lade hym selfe with thicke claye? ⁷ O howe sodenly wyll they stand vp that shall byte, and awake, that shal teare the in peces? yea, thou shalt be their praye. ⁸ Seynge thou hast spoyled many Heathen, therfore shall the remuaunte of the people spoyle the: because of mens bloude, and for the wronge done in the lande, in the cytye and vnto all them that dwell therein. ⁹ Wo vnto hym, that couetouslye gathereth euyll gotten goodes into hys house: that he maye set hys neste an hye, to escape from the power of mysfortune. ¹⁰ Thou hast deuysed the shame of thyne owne house, for thou haste slayne to muche people, and hast wylfully offended, ¹¹ so that the very stones of the wall shall crye oute of it, and the tymbre that lyeth betwixte the ioyntes of the buyldynge shal aunswere. ¹² Wo vnto hym, that buyldeth the towne wyth bloude, & maintaineth the citie wyth vnryghtuousnes. ¹³ Shall not the Lorde of hostes brynge thys to passe, that the laboures of the people shal be brent wyth a greate fyre, & that the thynge wherevpon the people haue weeryed them selues, shall be lost? ¹⁴ For the earth shall be full of knowledge of the Lordes honoure, lyke as the waters that couer the sea. ¹⁵ Wo vnto hym that geueth his neighboure dryncke, to get hym wrothefull dyspleasure for his dronckennesse: that he maye se his preuytees. ¹⁶ Therfore wyth shame shalte thou be fylled, in steade of honoure. Drincke thou also tyll thou slombre wyth al: for the cuppe of the Lordes ryght hande shall compasse the about and shamefull spewyng in steade of thy worshippe. ¹⁷ For the wronge that thou hast done in Lybanus, shall ouerwhelme the, and the wylde beastes shal make the afrayd: because of mens bloude, and for the wronge done in the lande, in the cytye, and vnto all such as dwell therein. ¹⁸ What helpe then wyll the Image do, whom the worckman hath fashyoned? Or the vayne cast Image, wherein because the craftesman putteth hys trust, therfore maketh he domme Idols? ¹⁹ Wo vnto hym, that sayeth to a pece of woode: aryse, & to a domme stone: stande vp. For what instruccyon maye suche one geue? Beholde it is layed ouer wyth gold and siluer and there is no breth in it. ²⁰ But the Lord in his holy temple is he, whome all the world shuld feare.

⁶ I wyll set watchmen vpon thy walles (O Ierusalem) whiche shall neyther ceasse daye nor night to preache the Lorde. And ye also shal not kepe him close,

Ye saye thus: Oure offences and synnes lye vpon vs, and we be corrupte in them: how shuld we then be restored vnto lyfe? ¹¹ Tell them: As trulye as I lyue, sayeth the Lorde God, I haue no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but moch rather that the wicked turne from his waye and lyue. Turne you, turne you from your vngodlye wayes, O ye of the house of Israell. Oh, wherfore wyll ye dye? ¹² Thou sonne of man, tell the chyldren of thy people: The ryghtuousnes of the rightuous shall not saue hym, when soeuer he turneth awaye vnfaithfully: Agayne, the wickednesse of the wicked shal not hurt him, when soeuer he conuerteth from hys vngodlynesse. And the ryghtuousnesse of the ryghtuous shall not saue hys lyfe, when soeuer he synneth. ¹³ If I saye vnto the ryghtuous, that he shall surelye lyue, and so he trust to his owne ryghtuousnesse, and do synne: then shall hys ryghtuousnesse be no more thought vpon, but in the wyckednesse that he hath done he shall dye. ¹⁴ Agayne, yf I saye vnto the wycked: thou shalt surely dye: and so he turne from hys synnes, and do the thinge that is lawfull and ryght: ¹⁵ In so moch that the same wicked man geueth the pledge agayne, restoreth that he had taken awaye by robbery, walcketh in the commaundementes of lyfe, & doth no wronge: Then shall he surely lyue, and not dye. ¹⁶ Yee the synnes that he hath done shall neuer be thought vpon: For in so moch as he doth now the thinge that is lawfull and ryght, he shall lyue. ¹⁷ And yet the children of thy people saye: Tushe, the waye of the Lorde is not ryght, where as their owne waye is rather vnright. ¹⁸ When the rightuous turneth from his rightuousnesse, & doeth the thinge that is wycked, he shal dye therfore. ¹⁹ But yf the wycked turne from hys wyckednesse, doing the thinge that is lawfull & ryght, he shall lyue therfore. ²⁰ Yet ye saye: the waye of the Lorde is not equall. O ye house of Israel, I wyll iudge euery one of you after his wayes. ²¹ In the .xij. yeare, the .v. daye of the .x. moneth of oure captyuyte, it happened, that one which was fled out of Ierusalem, came vnto me, and sayde: the cytye is destroyed. ²² Now the hande of the Lorde had bene vpon me the euenyng afore this man (which was escaped) came vnto me, & had opened my mouth, vntyll the mornynge that he came to me: yee he opened my mouth, so that I was nomore domme. ²³ Then came the worde of the Lorde vnto me, and sayde: ²⁴ Thou sonne of man, these that dwell in the wasted land of Israel, sayde: Abraham was but one man, & he had the lande in possessyon: now are we manye, & the lande is geuen vs to possesse also. ²⁵ And therfore tell them: Thus sayeth the Lorde: In the bloude haue ye eaten, youre eyes haue ye lyft vp to Idoles, & haue shed bloude: shal ye then haue the lande in possessyon? ²⁶ Ye leane vpon youre sweardes, ye worcke abomynacyon, euery one defyleth hys neghbours wyfe: & shall ye then possesse the lande? ²⁷ Saye thou these wordes vnto them: Thus sayeth the Lorde God: As truelye as I lyue all ye that dwell in thys wyldernesse, shalbe slayne with the sweard: what so euer is vpon the feld, will I geue vnto the beastes to be deuoured: those that be in stronge holdes & dennes shall dye of the pestylence. ²⁸ For I wyll make the lande so desolate and waste, and the pompe of her strength shall come to an ende. The mountaynes in Israell shalbe so waste, that no man shall trauayle therby. ²⁹ Then shall they learne to knowe, that I am the Lorde, when I make the lande waste and desolate, because of all theyr abomynacyons, that they haue wrought. ³⁰ And thou sonne of man, the chyldren of thy people that talcke of the, by th walles and in the dores of theyr houses, sayinge one to another: Come, let vs hear what worde is gone forthe from the Lorde: ³¹ These come vnto the, after the maner of a great people: yea my people syt doune before the, and heare thy wordes, but they do not there after: for in theyr mouthes they shewe them selues, as though they were feruent, but their herte goeth after theyr owne couetous lucre. ³² And as a balet that hath a swete tune, and is pleasaunt to synge, so shalte thou be vnto them: thy wordes shall they heare, but they wil not do thereafter. ³³ When thys commeth to passe (for lo, it commeth in dede) then shall they know, that there hath ben a Prophet among them.
