²² If a man be founde lyinge with a woman, that hath a wedded husband, then let them dye ether other of them: both the man that laye with the wyfe and also the wyfe: so thou shalt put away euel from Israel.

⁶ Wherefore now are they not twaine, but one fleshe. Let not man therefore put a sunder, that whiche God hath couppled together.

³¹ It is sayed, whosoeuer putteth a way his wife, let him geue her a testimonial of the deuorcement. ³² But I sai vnto you: whosoeuer putteth away his wife (except it be for fornicacion) causeth her to breke matrimony. And whosoeuer marieth her that is deuorced, breaketh wedlocke.

⁶ He put forth this similitude: A certayne man had a fygge tree planted in hys vyneyarde, & he came and sought frute theron, and founde none. ⁷ Then sayde he to the dresser of hys vyneyard: Beholde thys thre yeare haue I come and sought frute in thys fygge tre, and fynde none, cut it doune: why comvreth it the grounde. ⁸ And he aunswered, & sayde vnto hym: Lorde let it alone thys yeare also, tyll I digge rounde aboute it, and dounge it, ⁹ to se whether it wyl beare frute, and yf it beare not then, after that cut it doune.

¹² He sayde therfore: a certayne noble man wente into a farre countre, to receyue him a kyngdome, and then to come agayne. ¹³ And he called hys ten seruauntes, & deliuered them ten pounde saiynge vnto them? by and sell tyll I come. ¹⁴ But hys citisens hated hym, and sente messengers after hym, saiynge: we will not haue thys man to reygne ouer vs. ¹⁵ And it came to passe, when he was come agayne, and had receyued hys kyngdome, he commaunded these seruauntes, to be called to him (to whom he gaue hys money) to wyt what euery man had done. ¹⁶ Then came the fyrste saiynge: Lorde, thy pounde hath encreased ten pounde. ¹⁷ And he sayde vnto hym. Well good seruaunte, because thou waste faythful in a very lytell thynge, take thou authoritye ouer ten cities. ¹⁸ And the other came, saying: Lorde thy pounde hath encreased fyue pound. ¹⁹ And to the same he sayde, and be thou also ruler ouer .v. cities. ²⁰ And the .iij. came & sayde: Lorde, behold here thy pounde, whiche I haue kept in a napkyn, ²¹ for I feared the, because thou art a strayt man, thou takest vp that thou laydest not doune, and reapest that thou dyddest not sowe. ²² And he sayde to him: Of thyne owne mouthe iudge I the thou euil seruaunt. Knowest thou that I am a strayte man takyng vp that I layde not doune, and reapyng that I did not sowe? ²³ Wherfore then gauest not thou my money into the banke, that at my commynge I mighte haue requyred myne owne with vauntage. ²⁴ And he sayed to them that stode by: take from hym that pounde, and geue it hym that hath ten pounde. ²⁵ And they sayde vnto him: Lorde, he hath ten pounde. ²⁶ I saye vnto you, that vnto all them that haue, it shalbe geuen: and from hym that hath not, euen that he hath shalbe taken from hym. ²⁷ Moreouer those myne enemyes which woulde not that I should raigne ouer them, brynge hyther, and slea them before me.

²⁸ So ought men to loue theyr wyues, as their owne bodies. He that loueth hys wyfe, loueth him selfe.

¹² To the remnaunte speake I and not the Lord. Yf anye brother haue a wyfe that beleued not, if she be contente to dwel with hym, let him not put her awaye. ¹³ And the woman, which hath to her husband an infidele, if he consente to dwell with her, let her not put him awaie. ¹⁴ For the vnbeleuinge husbande, is sainctified by the wyfe: and the vnbeleuinge wife, is sainctified by the husbande. Or els were youre chyldren vnclene: but nowe are they pure. ¹⁵ But and if the vnbeleuinge departe, let him departe. A brother or a syster is not in subieccion to suche. God hath called vs in peace.

¹⁸ Fle fornycatyon. Al synnes that a man doth, are without the body. But he that is a fornicatour, sinneth agaynst his owne bodye.

¹⁰ He that breaketh wedlocke with another mans wyfe shall dye for it, because he hath broke wedlocke with his neighbours wyfe, and so shall she lykewyse.

²⁷ Ye haue heard how it was sayed to them of olde time: Thou shalt not commit adultery. ²⁸ But I saye vnto you, that whosoeuer loketh on a wife, lustinge after her, hath committed adulterye with her alredy in his herte

³ Then came vnto him the Pharises, tempting him, & saying to hym: Is it lawful for a man to put away his wyfe for all maner of causes? ⁴ He aunswered and sayde vnto them: Haue ye not reade, howe that he whiche made man at the beginnyng, made them man and woman ⁵ and sayd: for this thynge, shall a man leaue father and mother & cleaue vnto his wyfe, & thei twayne but one flesh. ⁶ Wherefore now are they not twaine, but one fleshe. Let not man therefore put a sunder, that whiche God hath couppled together. ⁷ Then sayd they to him: why did Moyses commaund to geue a testimoniall of diuorcement, & to put her awaye? ⁸ He sayde vnto them: Moyses because of the hardnes of youre hertes suffred you to put away your wyfes: But from the beginning it was not so. ⁹ I say therfore vnto you, whosoeuer putteth awaye hys wyfe, (except it he for fornicacion) & marieth another, breaketh wedloke. And whosoeuer maryeth her, which is diuorced, doth commit aduoutry.

² Neuerthelesse to avoide fornication, let euery man haue his wyfe: and let euerye woman haue her husbande.

⁸ But the fearful and vnbeleuing, & the abhominable, & murtherers, & whoremongers, & sorcerers, & ydolaters, & al lyars shall haue their parte in the lake which burneth wt fyre & brymstone, which is the seconde death.

³² But who so comitteth aduoutry wyth a womanne, he is a fole, and bringeth hys lyfe to destruccyon.

⁹ I say therfore vnto you, whosoeuer putteth awaye hys wyfe, (except it he for fornicacion) & marieth another, breaketh wedloke. And whosoeuer maryeth her, which is diuorced, doth commit aduoutry.

¹ As concerninge, wherof ye wrote vnto me, it is good for a man, not to touche a woman. ² Neuerthelesse to avoide fornication, let euery man haue his wyfe: and let euerye woman haue her husbande. ³ Let the man geue vnto the wyfe due beneuolence. Lykewyse also the wyfe vnto the man. ⁴ The wyfe hath not power ouer her owne bodie, but the husbande. And lykewyse the man hath not power ouer his owne bodye, but the wyfe. ⁵ Withdrawe not your selues one from another, excepte it be wyth consente for a tyme, for to geue your selues to fastinge, and prayer. And afterward come agayne to the same thinge, leste Sathan tempte you for your incontinencye. ⁶ Thys I saye of fauoure, and not of commaundement. ⁷ For I woulde that all men were as I my selfe am: but euerie man hath hys proper gyfte of God, one after this maner, another after that. ⁸ I saye vnto the vnmaryed men and wyddowes: it is good for them, if they abyed euen as I do. ⁹ But and if they cannot abstayne, let them mary. For it is better to mary, then burne. ¹⁰ Vnto the maryed commaunded not I but the Lorde: that the wyfe separate not her selfe from the man. ¹¹ Yf she separate her selfe, let her remayne vnmaryed, or be reconcilied to her husband againe. Other howe knoweste thou O man, whether thou shalt saue that woman or no? ¹⁷ but euen as God hath distributed to euery man. As the Lorde hath called euery person so let him walke: and so ordeine I in all congregations. ¹⁸ If any man be called beynge circumcised, let him adde nothing thereto. If any be called vncircumcised: let him not be circumcised. ¹⁹ Circumcison is nothinge, vncircumcision is nothinge, but the kepinge of the commaundementes of God is altogether. ²⁰ Let euery man abyde in the same state, wherin he is called. ²¹ Art thou called a seruauntes, care not for it. Neuertheles if thou maiest be fre, vse it rather. ²² For he that is called in the Lord beynge a seruaunte, is the Lordes freman. Lykewyse he that is called beynge fre, is Christes seruaunte. ²³ Ye are dearlye bought, be not mennes seruauntes. ²⁴ Brethren let euery man wherin he is called, therin abide with God. ²⁵ As concerninge virgins, I haue no commaundemente of the Lorde: yet geue I counsel, as one that hath obteyned mercy of the Lord to be faithfull. ²⁶ I suppose that it is good for the presente necessitie. For it is good for a man so to be. ²⁷ Arte thou bounde vnto a wife? seke not to be loused. Arte thou loused from a wife? seke not a wife. ²⁸ But and if thou take a wyfe, thou sinnest not. Lykewise if a virgine mary: she sinneth not. Neuerthelesse such shal haue trouble in theyr fleshe: but I fauoure you. ²⁹ This saye I brethren the tyme is short. It remaineth that they which haue wiues, be as though they had none, ³⁰ and they that wepe be as though they wept not, and they that reioyse be as though they reioysed not: & they that bye, be as though they possessed not: ³¹ and they that vse this worlde, be as though they vsed it not. For the fashion of this world goeth away. ³² I would haue you without care. The single man careth for the thinges of the Lorde howe he maye please the Lorde. ³³ But he that hath maried, careth for the thinges of the worlde howe he may please his wyfe. ³⁴ There is difference betwene a virgine and a wyfe. The single woman careth for the thinges of the Lorde, that she maye be pure both in bodye and also in spyryte. But she that is maried, careth for the thinges of the worlde, howe she maye please her husbande. ³⁵ This speake I for youre profite, not to tangel you in a snare, but for that whiche is honeste and comely vnto you, and that ye maye quietly cleaue vnto the Lorde without separacion. ³⁶ If anye man thinke that it is vncomelye for his virgine if we passe the tyme of mariage, and yf so nede require, let hym do what he listeth, he sinneth not: let them be coupled in mariage. ³⁷ Neuerthelesse, he that purposeth surely in his herte, hauing none nede, but hath power ouer his owne wyll, and hath so decreed in his herte that he wyl kepe his virgin, doeth well. So then he that ioyneth his virgine in mariage doeth well. ³⁸ But he that ioyneth not his virgine in mariage doeth better. ³⁹ The wife is bounde to the lawe as longe as her husband liueth. If her husbande slepe, she is at libertye to mary with whome she wyll, onely in the Lorde. ⁴⁰ But she is happyer if she so abyde, in my iudgemente. And I thinke verely that I haue the spirite of God.

⁴ Let wedlocke be had in pryce in all poyntes, and let the chambre be vndefyled: for whorekepers and aduouterers God wyll iudge.
