¹ In the lande of Nus there was a man called Iob: an innocent & vertuous man, soche one as feared God exchued euell. ² This man had .vij. sonnes, & .iij. daughters. ³ Hys substaunce was .vij.M. shepe .iij.M. camels .v.C. youck of oxen .v.C. she asses, & a very greate housholde: so that he was one of the moste principall men amonge all them of the east countre. ⁴ And his sonnes went, and made banckettes: one daye in one house, another daye in another, and sent for their .iij. systers to eate and drincke with them. ⁵ So when they had passed ouer the tyme of their banckettynge rounde aboute, Iob sent for them, and clensed them agayne, and gat vp early, & offered for euery one a brentofferynge. For Iob thought thus: peraduenture my sonnes haue done some offence, and haue bene vnthankfull to God in their hertes. And thus dyd Iob euery daye. ⁶ Now vpon a tyme, when the seruauntes of God came & stode before the Lord, Sathan came also amonge them. ⁷ And the Lorde sayde vnto Sathan: From whence commest thou? Sathan answered the Lorde, and sayd: I haue gone aboute the lande and walcked thorow it. ⁸ Then sayde the Lorde vnto Sathan: hast thou not consydered my seruaunt Iob, how that he is an innocent & vertuous man: soch one as feareth God, & extrueth euel, & that there is none lyke hym in the lande? ⁹ Sathan answered, & sayde vnto the Lord: Doeth Iob feare God for nought? ¹⁰ hast thou not preserued him, his house, and all hys substaunce on euery syde? hast thou not blessed the worckes of his handes? Is not his possessyon encreased in the lande? ¹¹ But laye thyne hande vpon him a lytle, touche ones all that he hath, and (I holde) he shall curse the to thy face. ¹² And the Lorde sayd vnto Sathan: lo all that he hath, be in thy power: only vpon hym self se that thou laye not thyne hande. Then went Sathan forth from the Lorde. ¹³ Now vpon a certayne daye when his sonnes and daughters were eatynge, and drinckinge wyne in their eldeste brothers house, ¹⁴ there came a messenger vnto Iob, & sayde: Whyle the oxen were a plowynge, & the Asses going in the pasture besyde them: ¹⁵ the Sabees came in violently, and toke them all awaye: ye they haue slayne thy seruauntes with the swearde and I only ranne my waye, to tell the. ¹⁶ And whyle he was yet speakynge, there came another, and sayde: The fyre of God is fallen from heauen, it hath consumed, and brent vp all thy shepe and seruauntes: and I only ranne my waye, to tell the. ¹⁷ In that meane season whyle he was yet speakynge there came another, and sayde: The Caldees made thre armies, & fell in vpon thy camels, which they haue caried awaye, yee and slayne thy seruauntes with the swearde: and I only am gotten awaye, to tell the: ¹⁸ Whyle he was speakynge, there came yet another, & sayde: Thy sonnes and daughters were eatyng & drynckynge wyne in their eldest brothers house, ¹⁹ & sodenly there came a mightie greate wynde out of the South, and smote the .iiij. corners of the house, which fell vpon thy chyldren, so that they are deed: and I am gotten awaye alone, to tell the. ²⁰ Then Iob stode vp, and rente hys clothes shaued his heade, fell doune vpon the ground, worshipped, ²¹ and sayde: Naked came I out of my mothers wombe, & naked shall I turne thether agayne. The Lorde gaue, and the Lord hath taken awaye now blessed be the name of the Lorde. ²² In all these thynges dyd Iob not offende, ner murmured folyshye agaynst God.

⁶ Iesus sayd vnto hym: I am the waye, the truthe and the lyfe. And no man commeth to the father, but by me.

¹⁹ The dedes of the flesh are manyfeste, which are these aduoutrye, fornicacyon, vncleannes, wantonnes, ²⁰ Idolatrye wytchecrafte, hatred, varyaunce, zele, wrathe stryfe, sedityon, sectes, ²¹ enuiynge, murther, drounkennes, glottonye, and suche lyke: of the whiche I tell you before, as I haue tolde you in tymes past, that they whiche commytte suche thynges shall not enheryte the kingdome of God.

¹⁹ Either knowe ye not howe that youre bodies are the temple of the holye ghoste, whyche is in you, whome ye haue of God, and how that ye are not your owne? ²⁰ For ye are dearlye boughte. Therfore glorifye ye God in youre bodyes, and in youre spyrytes, for they are Goddes.

²² And it chaunsed on a certaine daye that he went into a shippe, and his disciples also, and he sayed vnto them: Let vs go ouer to the other syde of the lake. And they lanched forth. ²³ And as they sayled he fell on slepe, and there arose a storme of winde in the lake, and they were fylled with water, and were in ieopardy. ²⁴ And they went to him and awoke him saiyng: Maister Maister we are loste. Then he rose & rebuked the winde & the tempeste of the water, & they ceased, & it wexed calme. ²⁵ And he sayed vnto them: Wher is your faythe? They feared and woundered saiynge one to another, what felowe is this: for he commaundeth both the windes & water, & they obey him?

¹⁰ But why doest thou then iudge thy brother? Other why doeste thou despyse thy brother? We shall all be brought before the iudgement seate of Christe. ¹¹ For it is wrytten: as truelye as I lyue sayth the Lorde: all knees shall bowe to me, and all tonges shall geue a knowledge to God. ¹² So shall euery one of vs, geue accomptes of hym selfe to GOD. ¹³ Let vs not therfore iudge one another anye more. But iudge thys rather, that no man put a stumblynge blocke or an occasyon to falle in hys brothers waye.

³ Neuerthelesse thoughe we walke compassed wt the fleshe, yet we ware not fleshly. ⁴ For the weapens of oure warre are not carnal thynges, but thynges myghtye in God to caste doune stronge holdes, ⁵ wherewith we ouerthrowe Imaginations and euerye hye thynge that exalteth it selfe agaynste the knoweledge of God, and brynge into captiuite all vnderstandynge to the obedience of Christe,

¹ Hym that is weake in the fayth, receyue vnto you, not in disputynge and troublyng hys conscience.

²⁸ For we knowe that all thynges worke for the beste vnto them that loue God, whyche also are called of purpose.

² My brethren, count it excedyng ioye when ye fal into dyuers temptacyons, ³ for as muche as ye knowe howe that the triynge of youre fayth bryngeth pacience: ⁴ and let pacyence haue her perfect worke, that ye maye be perfecte and sounde, lackynge nothynge.

¹³ There hath none other temptacion taken you, but suche as foloweth the nature of man. But God is faythful whiche shall not suffre you to be tempted aboue your strength: but shall in the middest of the temptacion make a waye to escape out.

¹⁰ The God of al grace, which called you vnto his eternal glory by Christe Iesus, shall hys owne selfe after ye haue suffred a litle affliccion make you perfecte, shall settle, strength and stablishe you.
