¹ And it chaunced in those dayes, that the Philistines gathered theyr hoste together to warre, entendyng to fyght with Israel. And Achis sayde to Dauid: Be sure, thou shalt go out with me in the host, and thy men also. ² And Dauid sayd agayne to Achis: then thou shalt knowe, what thy seruaunt can do. And Saul perceyued that it was Samuel, and stouped wt hys face to the ground and bowed him selfe. ¹⁵ And Samuel sayde to Saul: why hast thou vnquyeted me, to make me be brought vp? And Saul answered: I am sore encombred. For the Philistines make warre agaynst me & God is departed from me & answered me no more, nether by prophetes, nether by dreames. And to morow shalt thou and thy sonnes be with me, and the Lorde shall geue the host of Israel into the handes of the Philistines. ²⁰ Then Saul fell streyght waye flatte on the earth as longe as he was, and was sore a dread of the wordes of Samuel. And therto there was no strength in hym, for he had not eaten all the daye & the nyght before. ²¹ And the woman came vnto Saul and sawe that he was sore troubled, and said vnto him Se, thyne handmayde hath obeyed thy voyce and haue put my soule in my hand, and haue harkened vnto thy wordes whyche thou saydest vnto me. ²² Now therefore harken thou also vnto the voyce of thyne handmayde, and let me set a morsel of bread before the, and eat and get the strength to go thy iourney. ²³ But he refused it and sayde: I will not eate. ²⁴ And therto workers wyth spyrytes, sothsayers, ymages of witchcrafte, ydoles, and al other abhomynacyons that were spyed in the lande of Iuda and in Ierusalem, Iosiah put out of the waye, to make good the wordes of the law, whyche were wrytten in the boke that Helkiah the prieste founde in the house of the Lorde:

¹⁹ And therfore yf they saye vnto you: aske councel at the sothesayers, wytches, charmers and coniurers, then make them thys answere: Is there a people any where, that asketh not councel at his God, whether it be concerning the deade, or the lyuynge? ²⁰ Yf any man want lyght, let hym loke vpon the lawe and the testimony, whether they speake not after thys meaninge.

¹³ And so Saul dyed for hys trespace that he trespaced agaynst the Lorde, in that he kept not the worde of the Lorde, and in that he asked councell of a woman that wrought with a sprite, ¹⁴ and asked not of the Lorde. And therfore the Lorde killed hym & turned the kyngdome vnto Dauid the sonne of Iesai.

⁶ And he offered his sonne in fyre, and obserued dismall dayes, and vsed witchcrafte and maintened workers wyth spirites, and tellers of fortuners: and wrought muche wyckednesse in the syght of the Lorde to angre hym.

⁶ If any soule turne him to enchaunters or expounders of tokens and goo a whooryng after them, I wyl put my face vpon that soule & wyll destroy him from among his people.

²⁷ If there be a man or woman that worketh with a spryte or that expoundeth tokens they shall dye for it. Men shall stone them wyth stones, & their bloud shalbe vpon them.

³¹ Turne not to them that work wyth spyrytes, nether regarde them that obserue dysemall dayes: that ye be not defyled by them, for I am the lord youre God.
