²⁰ And Adam gaue names vnto al maner catell, and vnto the foules of the ayre and vnto all maner beastes of the felde. But ther was no helpe founde vnto Adam to beare hym company. ²¹ Then the Lord god cast a slomber on Adam, and he slepte. And then he toke out one of his ribbes, & in stede ther of he filled vp the place wt flesh. ²² And the lord God made of the ribbe whych he toke out of Adam a woman: and brought her vnto Adam. ²³ Then sayde Adam: This is once bone of my bones, & flesh of my flesh. This shal be called woman: because she was take of the man. ²⁴ For this cause shal a man leue father & mother, & cleue vnto hys wyfe, & they shal be one flesh.

² And Iehoas dyd that pleased the Lorde all the dayes of Iehoiada that preste. ³ And Iehoyada gaue hym two wyues, & he begat sonnes & daughters.

¹⁴ House & ryches maye a man haue by the heritage of hys elders, but a discrete woman is the gifte of the Lord.

² and much people folowed hym, and he healed them there. ³ Then came vnto him the Pharises, tempting him, & saying to hym: Is it lawful for a man to put away his wyfe for all maner of causes? ⁴ He aunswered and sayde vnto them: Haue ye not reade, howe that he whiche made man at the beginnyng, made them man and woman ⁵ and sayd: for this thynge, shall a man leaue father and mother & cleaue vnto his wyfe, & thei twayne but one flesh. ⁶ Wherefore now are they not twaine, but one fleshe. Let not man therefore put a sunder, that whiche God hath couppled together. ⁷ Then sayd they to him: why did Moyses commaund to geue a testimoniall of diuorcement, & to put her awaye? ⁸ He sayde vnto them: Moyses because of the hardnes of youre hertes suffred you to put away your wyfes: But from the beginning it was not so. ⁹ I say therfore vnto you, whosoeuer putteth awaye hys wyfe, (except it he for fornicacion) & marieth another, breaketh wedloke. And whosoeuer maryeth her, which is diuorced, doth commit aduoutry.

¹³ Nowe haue ye brought it to thys poynte againe, that the aulter of the Lorde is couered with teares wepyng and mourning: so that I will no more regarde the meatofferinge, neyther will I receyue or accepte anye thinge at your handes ¹⁴ And yet ye say: wherfore? Euen because that where as the Lorde made a couenaunt betwixt the & the wyfe of thy youth, thou hast despysed her: Yet is she thyne owne companion and maried wife. ¹⁵ So dyd not the one, and yet had he an excellente spirite. What dyd then the one? He sought the sede promised of God. Therfore loke well to your spirit, and let no man despise the wyfe of his youth. ¹⁶ Yf thou hatest her, put her awaye, sayeth the Lord God of Israel, & geue her a clothinge for the scorne, sayeth the Lord of hostes. Loke wel then to your spirit, & despise her not.

⁸ and they twayne shall be one fleshe. So then are they nowe not twayne but one fleshe. ⁹ Therfore what God hath coupled, let not man separate: ¹⁰ And in the house hys discyples axed hym agayne of the matter. ¹¹ And he sayed vnto them: Whosoeuer putteth awaye hys wyfe and maryeth an other breaketh wedlocke to her ward ¹² And yf a woman forsake her husbande & be maryed to an other she commytteth aduoutrye.

³⁹ The wife is bounde to the lawe as longe as her husband liueth. If her husbande slepe, she is at libertye to mary with whome she wyll, onely in the Lorde.

¹⁴ Sette your selues therfore at large, and beare not a straungers yoke with the vnbeleuers. For what feloweshyppe hath ryghtuousnes with vnryghtuousnes? What companye hath lyght with darkenes?

⁹ It is better to dwell in a corner vnder the house toppe, then wyth a braulynge woman in a wyde house.

²⁵ Husbandes loue youre wyues, euen as Christe loued the congregation, and gaue him selfe for it, ²⁶ to sanctifye it, and cleansed it in the fountayne of water thorowe the worde ²⁷ to make it vnto hym selfe a glorious congregation wythout spotte or wrinckle, or anye suche thinge: but that it shoulde be holy and wythout blame. ²⁸ So ought men to loue theyr wyues, as their owne bodies. He that loueth hys wyfe, loueth him selfe. ²⁹ For no man euer yet hated hys owne fleshe, but norisheth and cherisseth it euen as the Lorde doeth the congregation. ³⁰ For we are members of his bodie, of his fleshe, and of hys bones. ³¹ For this cause shall a man leaue father and mother, and shall continue wyth hys wyfe, and two shalbe made one fleshe. ³² Thys is a greate secrete, but I speake betwene Christe and the congregation. ³³ Neuerthelesse do ye so that euerye one of you loue his wyfe truely euen as hym selfe: And let the wyfe se that she feare her husbande.

²² Who so fyndeth a wyfe fyndeth a good thynge, and receyueth an wholsome benefyte of the Lord.

⁴ Loue suffreth longe, and is curteous. Loue enuieth not. Loue doth not frowardelye, swelleth not, dealeth not dishonestlye, ⁵ seketh not her owne, is not prouoketh to anger, thinketh not euil, ⁶ reioiceth not in iniquitie: but reioiseth in the trueth, ⁷ suffreth all thinge, beleueth all thinges, hopeth al thinges, endureth in all thinges.

⁴ Let wedlocke be had in pryce in all poyntes, and let the chambre be vndefyled: for whorekepers and aduouterers God wyll iudge.

¹ As concerninge, wherof ye wrote vnto me, it is good for a man, not to touche a woman. ² Neuerthelesse to avoide fornication, let euery man haue his wyfe: and let euerye woman haue her husbande. ³ Let the man geue vnto the wyfe due beneuolence. Lykewyse also the wyfe vnto the man. ⁴ The wyfe hath not power ouer her owne bodie, but the husbande. And lykewyse the man hath not power ouer his owne bodye, but the wyfe. ⁵ Withdrawe not your selues one from another, excepte it be wyth consente for a tyme, for to geue your selues to fastinge, and prayer. And afterward come agayne to the same thinge, leste Sathan tempte you for your incontinencye. ⁶ Thys I saye of fauoure, and not of commaundement. ⁷ For I woulde that all men were as I my selfe am: but euerie man hath hys proper gyfte of God, one after this maner, another after that. ⁸ I saye vnto the vnmaryed men and wyddowes: it is good for them, if they abyed euen as I do. ⁹ But and if they cannot abstayne, let them mary. For it is better to mary, then burne. ¹⁰ Vnto the maryed commaunded not I but the Lorde: that the wyfe separate not her selfe from the man. ¹¹ Yf she separate her selfe, let her remayne vnmaryed, or be reconcilied to her husband againe. And let not the husband put away his wife from him. ¹² To the remnaunte speake I and not the Lord. Yf anye brother haue a wyfe that beleued not, if she be contente to dwel with hym, let him not put her awaye. ¹³ And the woman, which hath to her husband an infidele, if he consente to dwell with her, let her not put him awaie. ¹⁴ For the vnbeleuinge husbande, is sainctified by the wyfe: and the vnbeleuinge wife, is sainctified by the husbande. Or els were youre chyldren vnclene: but nowe are they pure. ¹⁵ But and if the vnbeleuinge departe, let him departe. A brother or a syster is not in subieccion to suche. God hath called vs in peace. ¹⁶ For howe knowest thou O woman, whether thou shalt saue that man or no? Other howe knoweste thou O man, whether thou shalt saue that woman or no? ¹⁷ but euen as God hath distributed to euery man. As the Lorde hath called euery person so let him walke: and so ordeine I in all congregations. ¹⁸ If any man be called beynge circumcised, let him adde nothing thereto. If any be called vncircumcised: let him not be circumcised. ¹⁹ Circumcison is nothinge, vncircumcision is nothinge, but the kepinge of the commaundementes of God is altogether. ²⁰ Let euery man abyde in the same state, wherin he is called. ²¹ Art thou called a seruauntes, care not for it. Neuertheles if thou maiest be fre, vse it rather. ²² For he that is called in the Lord beynge a seruaunte, is the Lordes freman. Lykewyse he that is called beynge fre, is Christes seruaunte. ²³ Ye are dearlye bought, be not mennes seruauntes. ²⁴ Brethren let euery man wherin he is called, therin abide with God. ²⁵ As concerninge virgins, I haue no commaundemente of the Lorde: yet geue I counsel, as one that hath obteyned mercy of the Lord to be faithfull. ²⁶ I suppose that it is good for the presente necessitie. For it is good for a man so to be. ²⁷ Arte thou bounde vnto a wife? seke not to be loused. Arte thou loused from a wife? seke not a wife. ²⁸ But and if thou take a wyfe, thou sinnest not. Lykewise if a virgine mary: she sinneth not. Neuerthelesse such shal haue trouble in theyr fleshe: but I fauoure you. ²⁹ This saye I brethren the tyme is short. It remaineth that they which haue wiues, be as though they had none, ³⁰ and they that wepe be as though they wept not, and they that reioyse be as though they reioysed not: & they that bye, be as though they possessed not: ³¹ and they that vse this worlde, be as though they vsed it not. For the fashion of this world goeth away. ³² I would haue you without care. The single man careth for the thinges of the Lorde howe he maye please the Lorde. ³³ But he that hath maried, careth for the thinges of the worlde howe he may please his wyfe. ³⁴ There is difference betwene a virgine and a wyfe. The single woman careth for the thinges of the Lorde, that she maye be pure both in bodye and also in spyryte. But she that is maried, careth for the thinges of the worlde, howe she maye please her husbande. ³⁵ This speake I for youre profite, not to tangel you in a snare, but for that whiche is honeste and comely vnto you, and that ye maye quietly cleaue vnto the Lorde without separacion. ³⁶ If anye man thinke that it is vncomelye for his virgine if we passe the tyme of mariage, and yf so nede require, let hym do what he listeth, he sinneth not: let them be coupled in mariage. ³⁷ Neuerthelesse, he that purposeth surely in his herte, hauing none nede, but hath power ouer his owne wyll, and hath so decreed in his herte that he wyl kepe his virgin, doeth well. So then he that ioyneth his virgine in mariage doeth well. ³⁸ But he that ioyneth not his virgine in mariage doeth better. ³⁹ The wife is bounde to the lawe as longe as her husband liueth. If her husbande slepe, she is at libertye to mary with whome she wyll, onely in the Lorde. ⁴⁰ But she is happyer if she so abyde, in my iudgemente. And I thinke verely that I haue the spirite of God.
