16 so that he retired into places of solitude, for the convenience of prayer.

John 3:1-36

1 Now one of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, was there, a ruler of the Jews: 2 who came to Jesus by night, and said to him, rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher sent from God: for no man can perform the miracles that you do, except God be with him. 3 Jesus answered him, I declare unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus replied, how can a man be born when he is old? can he enter into his mother, and be born a second time? 5 Jesus answered, I tell thee, except a man be renewed by the spiritual baptism, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 the cleansing of the body is only external, but the purification of the spirit is spiritual. 7 be not surprized that I said to thee, you must be born again. 8 the wind bloweth where it listeth, and you hear the sound thereof, but cannot tell whence it comes, or whither it goes: such is the change in every one that is renewed by the spirit. 9 Nicodemus answered, how can that be? 10 Jesus answered him, are you a doctor in Israel, and not know these things? 11 I declare unto thee, we speak what we know, and testify what we have seen; but you do not receive our testimony. 12 if you don't believe when I tell you what is plain, how should you believe, if I tell you of things more sublime? 13 for no man hath penetrated into the secrets of heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the son of man, who is in heaven. 14 but as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the son of man be lifted up: 15 that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 for God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have eternal life. 17 for God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 he that believeth on him, shall not be condemned: but he that believeth not, is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the only begotten son of God. 19 and this is the subject of their condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men have loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 for every one that doth evil, hateth the light, and shunneth the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 but he that doth right, cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, because they are agreeable to the will of God. 22 After this Jesus went with his disciples into Judea, where he stay'd with them for some time, 23 and baptized, while John was likewise baptizing in Enon, near Salim, it being a place abounding with water: so that people came to be baptized there. 24 for John was not yet cast into prison. 25 Now there happen'd to be a dispute about baptism between a Jews, and some of John's disciples: 26 who thereupon went to John, and said, master, he that was with you beyond Jordan, to whom you bore testimony, he himself does now baptize likewise, and the people flock to him. 27 but John made them this answer, a man can have no authority, but what he derives from heaven. 28 you yourselves can bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but was only sent before him: 29 the bridegroom is he that hath a right to the bride: as for the friend of the bridegroom, who is nigh his person and heareth him, he greatly rejoyces at the voice of the bridegroom: upon this account my joy is compleat. 30 he must advance, 31 but I must decline. he that cometh from above, is above all: he that is from the earth, is earthly, and his language is likewise earthly: he that cometh from heaven is above all. 32 and what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; but his testimony doth no man receive. 33 he that hath received his testimony, hath set his seal to this, that God is true. 34 for he whom God hath sent, saith nothing but what is divine: for God hath given him the spirit without restriction. 35 the father loveth the son, and hath given all things into his hand. 36 he that believeth on the son, hath a right to everlasting life: and he that disobeys the son, shall not enjoy life; but be expos'd to divine wrath.

John 14:1-31

1 Let not your heart be troubled: you trust in God, trust also in me. 2 in my father's house are many mansions; however, I have told you, I am going to prepare a place for you: 3 and when I am gone, and have prepar'd a place for you, I will come again, to take you with me, that where I am there ye may be also. 4 and where I am going you know, and the way ye know. 5 Thomas said to him, Lord, we know not whither you are going, how then can we know the way? 6 Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no man can come to the father, but by me. 7 if you had known me, you would likewise have known my father: and from henceforth you shall know him, nay, you have seen him. 8 Philip said to him, Lord shew us the father, and we are satisfied. 9 Jesus said to him, have I been with you so long, and don't you know me yet? Philip, he that hath seen me, hath seen the father; why then do you say, shew us the father? 10 don't you believe that I am in the father, and the father in me? the words that I speak unto you, I speak indeed, tho' not from my self; but as to the works, the father, who dwells in me, he is the agent. 11 believe me, I am in the father, and the father in me: at least believe me upon account of the very works. 12 I assure you, he that believeth on me, shall likewise perform the works that I do; nay, greater works than these shall he do; because for that end am I going to my father. 13 and if in my name ye shall ask any thing of the father, whereby he may be glorified by the son, I will effect it. 14 when ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. 15 if ye love me, keep my commandments. 16 and I will pray the father, and he shall give you another advocate, to abide with you for ever; 17 even the spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees nor knows him: but ye shall know him, for he shall dwell with you, and shall be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come again to you. 19 yet a little while, and the world shall see me no more: but ye shall see me: because I shall live again, and ye shall live also. 20 then shall you know, that I am in my father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 he that hath received my commandments, and keeps them, he it is that loves me: and he that loves me, shall be beloved by my father, and I will love him, and shew my self unto him. 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, why Lord, will you show your self to us, and not to the world? 23 Jesus answered him, he that loves me, will observe my precepts: and my father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. 24 he does not love me, who does not observe my precepts: for the doctrine which you have heard, is not mine, but the father's who sent me. 25 this is what I have to tell you, for the little time that I am with you. 26 but the advocate, the holy spirit, whom the father will send for my sake, he will explain every thing to you, and make you remember, all that I have told you. 27 I bid you farewell! I give you my last farewell; but I do not give it out of common formality: don't be concern'd for me, or apprehensive for your selves. 28 ye have heard me say, "I am going away, and shall come again unto you." if ye loved me, ye would rejoice at my going to the father: for the father is greater than I. 29 this I have told you now, before it come to pass, that when it is come to pass, ye may believe. my conversation will now be but short with you, 30 for the prince of the world is coming: 31 not that he has any thing against me, but that the world may know that I love the father, by my executing the commands which my father gave me: arise, let us go hence.

Romans 12:2

2 and be not conformed to the present age: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may perceive what God requires of you is good, and acceptable, and perfect.

2 Corinthians 6:4-5

4 but in all things I approve myself as the minister of God, by great constancy in afflictions, in torments, in distresses, from stripes, 5 from imprisonments, from tumults, from labours, from watchings, from penury.

James 1:5-7

5 If any of you is deficient in prudence, let him ask it of God, who liberally gives to all without upbraiding: and he will give it. 6 but let him be fully persuaded of the lawfulness of what he asks: for he that is diffident about that, is like the waves that fluctuate with the wind. 7 such a man must not expect any answer from the Lord.

Hebrews 11:6

6 now without faith it is impossible to be acceptable to him: for he that presents himself to God, cannot but believe he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who make their addresses to him.
