Bible verses about "servanthood" | Mace

Matthew 20:25-28

25 but Jesus calling them to him, said, ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise arbitrary dominion over them, and they that are great exercise their authority. 26 but it must not be so among you: on the contrary, whoever would rise among you, let him be your minister. 27 and whoever would be chief among you, let him be your servant. 28 as the son of man came not to be ministred unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for all.

Mark 10:42-45

42 So that Jesus called them to him, and said, you know that the rulers of the Gentiles domineer over them, and their great ones treat them in an imperious manner; 43 but it shall not be so among young you: on the contrary, whoever would be great among you, he must be your servant; 44 and whoever would be the chief, he must be the slave of all the rest. 45 for the son of man himself is not come to receive the services of men, but to do them service, and to lay down his life a ransom for many.

1 Peter 2:16

16 men. You are free, don't let your liberty serve as a pretext for vice: but act as the servants

John 12:26

26 if any man would serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there also shall my servant be: whoever serves me, him will my father reward.

Colossians 3:17

John 13:1-38

1 Now before the feast of the passover, Jesus perceiving that his hour was come, when he was to pass out of this world, and go to the father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. 2 while they were at supper, (the devil having now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him) Jesus, 3 though he knew that the father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and was going to God, 4 rose from supper, laid aside his garment, and took a towel to wrap about him. 5 after that, he poured water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. 6 then coming to Simon Peter, Peter said to him, Lord, what! would you wash my feet? 7 Jesus answered him, you don't at present comprehend what I am about: but hereafter you shall. 8 Peter said to him, you shall never wash my feet. Jesus answered, if I do not cleanse thee, you cannot partake with me. 9 Simon Peter said to him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. 10 Jesus said to him, he that comes out from bathing has occasion only to wash his feet, the rest of his body being clean: so you are clean, but not every one of you. 11 for he knew who would betray him; therefore, said he, you are not every one of you clean. 12 after he had washed their feet, he took his garment, and setting down again, he said to them, do you comprehend what I have been doing? 13 you call me master, and lord: and you are in the right; for so I am. 14 if I then, tho' lord and master, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 for I have given you example, that you might behave to one another, as I have to you. 16 I declare unto you, the servant is not greater than his lord, neither he that is sent, greater than he that sent him. 17 if ye comprehend these things, happy are ye if ye put them in practice. 18 I say not this of you all; for I know whom I have chosen: and that passage of the scripture must be fulfilled, "He that eateth bread with me, hath lift up his heel against me." 19 I tell it you now before it happens, that when it is come to pass, you may believe that I am the Messias. 20 I declare unto you, he that receiveth him that I send, receiveth me: and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me. 21 When Jesus utter'd these words, he was troubled in spirit, and said without disguise, I assure you, that one of you shall betray me. 22 then the disciples looked one on another, being in pain to know who he meant. 23 now the favourite disciple of Jesus sat next to him at table. 24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, to ask who it was he meant. 25 then accordingly bending his head to Jesus's ear, he whisper'd, Lord, who is it? 26 Jesus answered, he it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have made it. and when he had made the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27 and after he had taken the sop, Satan entred into him. then said Jesus to him, what you do, do quickly. 28 but the company at table did not know what he meant by saying so. 29 for as Judas had the purse, some of them thought, that Jesus had ordered him to buy what was necessary against the feast: or give something to the poor. 30 Judas then having received the sop, immediately went out: and it was night. 31 When he was gone, Jesus said, now is the son of man glorified, and God is glorified by him. 32 as God is glorified by him, so God will glorify him in himself, and will immediately glorify him. 33 my dear children, I am with you but for a little while. you shall seek me: but as I said to the Jews, so now I say to you, "where I am going you cannot come." 34 a new commandment I give unto you, "that ye love one another; that you would have the same love for one another as I have had for you." 35 by this mutual love shall all men know that you are my disciples. 36 Simon Peter said to him, Lord, where are you going? Jesus answered him, you cannot at present follow me, where I am going; but hereafter you shall. 37 Peter said to him, Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for your sake. 38 Jesus answered him, you lay down your life for my sake! Verily, verily I say unto thee, the cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.

Philippians 2:1-30

1 If then there be any christian consolation, any charitable relief, any communion of the spirit, if any tenderness of compassion, 2 compleat my joy, by pursuing the same view, living in mutual love, by being unanimous, and cultivating that harmony. 3 Do nothing out of a spirit of contention, or for vain-glory, but modestly look upon others as if they were better than yourselves. 4 let no man consult only his private interest, but let every man consult likewise the interest of others. 5 for the same temper of mind ought to be in you as was in Christ Jesus: 6 who tho' he was the image of God, did not affect to appear with divine majesty, but divested himself thereof, 7 by assuming the form of a servant: being made in the likeness of men, 8 and his whole exterior showing nothing more than a meer man, he abased himself, and carried his submission so far as to die, even the death of the cross. 9 wherefore God has highly exalted and given him a name, which is above every name; 10 that at the name of Jesus both angels and men, the living and the dead, should pay their adorations, 11 and that every nation should confess that Jesus Christ is the Lord, to the glory of God the father. 12 Wherefore, my beloved, as you have always obey'd the gospel, not only when I was with you, but much more now while I am absent, continue the work of your own salvation, whatever persecutions you apprehend: 13 for it is God that influences your desires and endeavours, out of his benevolence to you. 14 do every thing without murmuring and disputes: 15 that you may be without reproach, the inoffensive spotless children of God in the midst of a depraved and perverse generation (among whom you should shine as stars in the world, 16 you, who display the doctrine of eternal life) that in the day of Christ I may have the satisfaction of not having pursued my laborious course in vain. 17 and if my blood should serve as a libation to ratify your faith, I should rejoice and congratulate with you all thereupon; 18 and you too should be glad and congratulate me upon that account. 19 However, I hope by the favour of the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you very soon, that I may have some encouragement by knowing the state of your affairs: 20 for there is no one that is so dear to me as he, and no one will more sincerely interest himself in your concerns. 21 the most consult their private advantage, and neglect the dispensation of Jesus Christ. 22 you know he has stood the test, and has serv'd with me in the gospel, as a son serves with his father. 23 I hope therefore to send him to you as soon as I find what turn my affairs shall take: 24 nay, I trust in the Lord, that I myself too shall visit you very soon. 25 however I thought it necessary to send you Epaphroditus my brother, my collegue in the ministry, and my fellow-soldier, whom you had sent to supply my wants: 26 for he long'd to see you all, and was greatly concern'd, that you should hear he was sick. and indeed he was sick almost unto death: 27 but God had pity on him, and not on him only, but on me likewise, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. 28 I sent him therefore with the greater dispatch, that I might have the less disquietude, by the satisfaction you will find in seeing him again. 29 receive him then in the Lord with all alacrity, and let such be the objects of your esteem: 30 for he was upon the brink of death for the service of Christ, having expos'd his life to the greatest dangers, to perform those kind offices, which you could not do yourselves.

Luke 22:27

27 for who is greatest, he that sits at table, or he that waits? is it not the person at table? yet I am among you as one that serves.
