¹⁸ and as they sat eating, Jesus said, verily I say unto you, one of you that is eating with me, will betray me. ¹⁹ and they were seized with sorrow, all successively asking him, is it I? ²⁰ but he answered them, saying, it is one of the twelve, he that eats of the same mess with me. ²¹ the son of man is going indeed, according to what is written of him: but wo to that man, by whom the son of man is betrayed: it would be better for that man, if he had never been born.

⁴⁷ And before he had done speaking, Judas one of the twelve appear'd, with a numerous retinue, arm'd with swords and staves, being sent by the chief priests and elders of the people. ⁴⁸ now he that was to betray him, gave them this signal, the person I shall kiss, is the very man, be sure to secure him. ⁴⁹ and immediately advancing to Jesus, he said, master, I salute you, and kissed him. ⁵⁰ Jesus said to him, friend, what are you come about? when the others advancing, seized upon Jesus, and secur'd him.

³ At the same time, Judas who had betrayed him, finding that he was condemned, repented, and carried back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and senators, saying, ⁴ I have sinned in betraying the blood of the innocent: and they said, what is it to us? you must look to that. ⁵ then throwing down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed, and went and hanged himself.

²¹ and as they were eating, he said, 'tis indeed true that one of this company shall betray me. ²² at which they were exceedingly concern'd, and began every one of them to ask, Lord, is it I? ²³ to this he answered, he that has his hand in the dish with mine, he it is that will betray me. ²⁴ the son of man is going to die, pursuant to the scripture: but wo to that man by whom the son of man is betrayed: it had been better for that man, if he had never been born. ²⁵ then Judas, he who was to betray him, said, master, is it I? Jesus replied, yes.

¹⁶ and said, men and brethren, the prediction which the holy ghost made, by the mouth of David, concerning Judas, who was guide to those that seiz'd Jesus, must have been accomplished.

²⁷ and after he had taken the sop, Satan entred into him. then said Jesus to him, what you do, do quickly.

² now Judas, who was to betray him, knew the place: for Jesus and his disciples had frequently assembled there. ³ Judas then having got a company of soldiers, and officers, by order of the chief priests and Pharisees, came thither with lanterns, torches, and with arms. ⁴ but Jesus who knew every thing that should happen to him, advanc'd, and said to them, who do you look for? ⁵ they answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. I am he, said Jesus. and Judas who was to betray him, was also with them.

⁷⁰ Jesus answered them, have I not chosen you all twelve, and yet one of you is an avowed enemy?

¹⁴ Then one of the twelve, Judas Iscariot by name, went to the chief priests, ¹⁵ and said, what will ye give me, and I will deliver him to you? and they promised him thirty pieces of silver. ¹⁶ from which time he watched a favourable opportunity to deliver him.

² while they were at supper, (the devil having now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him) Jesus,

³ now satan had inspired Judas surnam'd Iscariot, one of the twelve, what to do. ⁴ accordingly he went and conferr'd with the chief priests and officers of the temple, about the method of seizing him. ⁵ they were pleas'd with his proposal, and agreed to give him a certain sum. ⁶ Judas accepted the bargain, and sought an opportunity to secure him, without alarming the people.

⁶ this he said, not out of any concern for the poor; but because being purse-bearer he used to pilfer what was in bank.

¹² by your authority I have kept them, during my being with them in the world: those that you gave me I have kept, and not one of them is lost, except the son of perdition: according as the scripture foretold.

¹⁸ I say not this of you all; for I know whom I have chosen: and that passage of the scripture must be fulfilled, "He that eateth bread with me, hath lift up his heel against me." ¹⁹ I tell it you now before it happens, that when it is come to pass, you may believe that I am the Messias. ²⁰ I declare unto you, he that receiveth him that I send, receiveth me: and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me. ²¹ When Jesus utter'd these words, he was troubled in spirit, and said without disguise, I assure you, that one of you shall betray me. ²² then the disciples looked one on another, being in pain to know who he meant. ²³ now the favourite disciple of Jesus sat next to him at table. ²⁴ Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, to ask who it was he meant. ²⁵ then accordingly bending his head to Jesus's ear, he whisper'd, Lord, who is it? ²⁶ Jesus answered, he it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have made it. and when he had made the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.

¹⁸ but after he had purchased a field with the reward of his iniquity, he fell down, his belly burst, and all his bowels gushed out:

¹⁶ and said, men and brethren, the prediction which the holy ghost made, by the mouth of David, concerning Judas, who was guide to those that seiz'd Jesus, must have been accomplished. ¹⁷ he was of our number, and shared in the functions of this ministry. ¹⁸ but after he had purchased a field with the reward of his iniquity, he fell down, his belly burst, and all his bowels gushed out: ¹⁹ a fact so generally known to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, that they called the field in their tongue, Aceldema, that is to say, the field of blood. ²⁰ for it is written in the book of psalms, "let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein:" and "let another take possession of his charge." ²¹ wherefore of those who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus convers'd among us, ²² from his baptism by John, to the day of his assumption, we should chuse one to be a witness with us of his resurrection. ²³ accordingly they presented two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was sirnamed Justus, and Matthias. and they prayed, ²⁴ saying, "thou Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men, show us which of these two thou hast chosen, ²⁵ that he may be admitted to this apostolick ministry which Judas abandoned, to go to his own place."

⁴ whereupon one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, who was to betray him, ⁵ said, why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, to be given to the poor? ⁶ this he said, not out of any concern for the poor; but because being purse-bearer he used to pilfer what was in bank.

⁶⁷ upon which Jesus said to the twelve, will not ye likewise go away? ⁶⁸ but Simon Peter answered, Lord, to whom shall we go? you have the words of eternal life. ⁶⁹ and we have believed and we have acknowledged that you are the Christ, the son of God. ⁷⁰ Jesus answered them, have I not chosen you all twelve, and yet one of you is an avowed enemy? ⁷¹ meaning Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that would betray him, altho' he was one of the twelve.

⁵ then throwing down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed, and went and hanged himself.

⁴³ All of a sudden, while he was yet speaking, appear'd Judas, one of the twelve, attended by a great number of people with swords and clubs, who were sent by the chief priests, the Scribes, and rulers. ⁴⁴ now he that betrayed him, had given them this signal, you will see me salute one with a kiss, that's he: seize him, and don't let him escape. ⁴⁵ then advancing, he went directly up to him, saying, master, master, and kissed him.
