² at that time Jehovah spoke by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, Go and take the sackcloth off your loins, and take your shoe off your foot. And he did so, walking naked and barefoot. ³ And Jehovah said, Just as My servant Isaiah has walked naked and barefoot three years, a sign and wonder on Egypt and on Ethiopia; ⁴ so shall the king of Assyria lead away Egypt's prisoners, and the Ethiopian exiles, young and old, naked and barefoot, even with uncovered buttocks, to the shame of Egypt. ⁵ And they shall be afraid and ashamed of Ethiopia their hope, and of Egypt their glory. ⁶ And he who lives in this coast shall say in that day, Behold, this has become of our hope to which we fled for help there, to be delivered from before the king of Assyria; and, How shall we escape?

⁴³ But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt. And the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.

⁹ And Zerah the Ethiopian came out against them with an army of a million men, and three hundred chariots. And he came to Mareshah. ¹⁰ And Asa went out against him, and they set the battle in order in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah. ¹¹ And Asa cried to Jehovah his God and said, Jehovah, it is nothing with You to help, whether with many or with him who has no power. Help us, O Jehovah our God, for we rest on You, and in Your name we go against this multitude. O Jehovah, You are our God. Do not let man prevail against You. ¹² And Jehovah struck the Cushites before Asa and before Judah. And the Cushites fled. ¹³ And Asa and the people with him pursued them to Gerar. And the Cushites fell, for none was left alive of them. For they were destroyed before Jehovah and before His army. And they carried away very much plunder. ¹⁴ And they struck all the cities around Gerar, for the fear of Jehovah came on them. And they plundered all the cities, for there was very much plunder in them. ¹⁵ And they struck the tents of cattle, and carried away sheep and camels in abundance and returned to Jerusalem.

³ For I am Jehovah your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I gave Egypt for your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for you.

³¹ Princes shall come out of Egypt; Ethiopia shall stretch out her hands to God.

⁷ Are you not like sons of the Ethiopians to Me, O sons of Israel, says Jehovah? Have I not brought Israel up out of the land of Egypt? and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?

²⁷ And he arose and went. And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasure and had come to Jerusalem to worship,

²³ Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard its spots? Then you also may do good, who are accustomed to doing evil.

²⁷ And he arose and went. And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasure and had come to Jerusalem to worship, ²⁸ was returning. And sitting in his chariot he read Isaiah the prophet. ²⁹ Then the Spirit said to Philip, Go near and join yourself to this chariot. ³⁰ And Philip ran there to him and heard him read the prophet Isaiah, and said, Do you indeed understand what you are reading? ³¹ And he said, How can I unless some man should guide me? And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him. ³² And the content of the Scripture which he read was this: "He was led as a sheep to the slaughter, and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so He opened not His mouth. ³³ In His humiliation His judgment was taken away, and who shall declare His generation? For His life is taken from the earth." ³⁴ And the eunuch answered Philip and said, I beg you, of whom does the prophet speak this? Of himself or of some other man? ³⁵ Then Philip opened his mouth and began at the same Scripture and preached the gospel of Jesus to him. ³⁶ And as they passed along the way, they came on some water. And the eunuch said, See, here is water, what hinders me from being baptized? ³⁷ Philip said, If you believe with all your heart, it is lawful. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. ³⁸ And he commanded the chariot to stand still. And they both went down into the water, both Philip and the eunuch. And he baptized him. ³⁹ And when they had come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more. And he went on his way rejoicing.
