²² When Paul stood in the court at Ar-eopÆa- gus, he said, Men of Athens, I see that above all things you are extravagant in the worship of idols. ²³ For as I walked about, and viewed the house of your idols, I found an altar with this inscription, THIS IS THE ALTAR OF THE UNKNOWN GOD, whom therefore, while you know him not but yet worship, is the very one I am preaching to you. ²⁴ For the God, who made the world and all things therein, and who is the LORD of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands; ²⁵ Neither is he ministered to by human hands, nor is he in need of anything, for it is he who gave life and breath to all men. ²⁶ And he has made of one blood all nations of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and he has appointed seasons by his command, and has set limits to the age of men; ²⁷ So that they should seek and search after God, and find him by means of his creations, because he is not far from any one of us:

³ For the time past sufficed to have wrought the will of the pagans when you lived in lasciviousness, drunkenness, revellings, indecent singing, and worship of idols.

²² Now then, if God wanted to shew his anger, and make his power known, would he not then, after the abundance of his patience, bring wrath upon the vessels of wrath which were ready for destruction? ²³ But he poured his mercy upon the favored vessels, which were prepared for the glory of God. ²⁴ Namely, ourselves, the called ones, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles. ²⁵ As he said also in Hosea, I will call them my people, who were not my own people; and her beloved, who was not beloved. ²⁶ And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said you are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God. ²⁷ Isaiah also preached concerning the children of Israel: Though the number of children of Israel should be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant shall be saved. ²⁸ For whatever the LORD has determined and decreed, he shall bring to pass upon the earth. ²⁹ Just as Isaiah had said before, If the LORD of Hosts had not increased the remnant, we should have been like SodÆom, and should have resembled Go-morÆrah. ³⁰ What shall we say then? That the Gentiles who followed not after righteousness have attained to righteousness; that is, the righteousness which is the result of faith.

¹⁷ This I say therefore and testify in the LORD: that you henceforth live not as other Gentiles, who live in the vanity of their mind, ¹⁸ And whose understanding is dark, and who are alienated from the life of God, because they have no knowledge, and because of the blindness of their hearts; ¹⁹ And who have given up their hope, and have surrendered themselves to wantonness, and to the practice of all uncleanness in their covetousness.

¹⁴ That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

¹⁶ I have other sheep also, which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear my voice; and all the sheep will become one flock and one shepherd.

²⁸ Let this be known to you therefore: that this salvation of God is sent to the Gentiles, for they will listen to it.

¹¹ Where there is neither Jew nor Syrian, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Greek nor barbarian, slave nor freeman; but Christ is all and in all men.

⁷ And after much controversy, Simon Peter rose up and said to them, Men and brethren, you know that from the early days God chose that from my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the Gospel and believe. ⁸ And God, who knows what is in the heart, has testified concerning them, and has given them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us. ⁹ And he did not discriminate between us and them, because he purified their hearts by faith.
