¹⁶ You did not choose me, but I chose you, and I have appointed you, that you also should go and produce fruit, and that your fruit might remain; so that whatever you ask my Father in my name, he will give it to you.

⁸ In this the Father will be glorified, that you bear abundant fruit, and be my disciples.

⁶ Being confident of this very thing, that he who has begun the good work among you, the same will continue it until the day of our LORD Jesus Christ:

⁵ And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith, virtue; and to virtue, knowledge; ⁶ And to knowledge, self-control; and to selfcontrol, patience; and to patience; godliness; ⁷ And to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. ⁸ For when these things are found among you and abound, you are not empty nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our LORD Jesus Christ. ⁹ But he who lacks these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins.

¹⁴ Though a man say he has faith, what profit is it, my brethren, if he does not have works? Can faith save him? ¹⁵ If a brother or sister be naked, and lacking of daily food, ¹⁶ And one of you say to them, Depart in peace, be warmed, and be filled; yet you do not give to them those things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? ¹⁷ Even so faith, without works, is dead, by itself. ¹⁸ For a man may say, You have faith, and I have works: show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. ¹⁹ You believe that there is one God; you do well. The devils also believe, and they tremble. ²⁰ Would you know, O weak man, that faith without works is dead? ²¹ Was not our father Abraham justified by works, when he raised Isaac his son upon the altar? ²² You can see, how his faith helped his works, and how by works his faith was made perfect. ²³ And the scripture was fulfilled which said, Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. ²⁴ You see then, how a man by works becomes righteous, and not by faith only. ²⁵ Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot, justified by works, when she welcomed the spies, and sent them out another way? ²⁶ For as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.

²² But the fruits of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, ²³ Meekness, self-control: there is no law against these.

Just as a branch cannot give fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine; even so you cannot, unless you remain with me. ⁵ I am the vine, you are the branches. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they kept my word, they will also keep yours. ²¹ But they will do all these things to you for the sake of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. ²² If I had not come and spoken to them, they would be without sin; but now they have no excuse for their sins. ²³ He who hates me, hates my Father also. ²⁴ If I had not done works before their eyes, such as no other man has ever done, they would be without sin; but now they have seen and hated me and also my Father, ²⁵ So that the word which is written in their law may be fulfilled, They hated me for no reason. ²⁶ But when the Comforter comes, whom I will send to you from my Father, the Spirit of truth which proceeds from my Father, he will testify concerning me. ²⁷ And you also will testify because you have been with me from the beginning.
