²⁵ But Jesus called them to himself and* said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in high positions exercise authority over them. ²⁶ It will not be like this among you! But whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, ²⁷ and whoever wants to be most prominent among you must be your slave— ²⁸ just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

⁴² And Jesus called them to himself and* said to them, "You know that those who are considered to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their people in high positions exercise authority over them. ⁴³ But it is not like this among you! But whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, ⁴⁴ and whoever wants to be most prominent among you must be the slave of all. ⁴⁵ For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

¹⁶ Live as free persons, and not using your* freedom as a covering for evil, but as slaves of God.

²⁶ If anyone serves me, he must follow me, and where I am, there my servant will be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

¹⁷ and everything _⌊whatever_⌋* you do in word or in deed, giving thanks for all things in the name of the Lord Jesus to God the Father through him.

²¹ being subject to one another _⌊out of reverence for_⌋* Christ

¹ Now before the feast of Passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come that he would depart from this world to the Father, and* having loved his* own in the world, loved them to the end. ² And as* a dinner was taking place, when* the devil had already put into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot that he should betray him, ³ because he* knew that the Father had given him all things into his* hands, and that he had come forth from God and was going away to God, ⁴ he got up from the dinner and took off his* outer clothing, and taking a towel, tied it* around himself. ⁵ Then he poured water into the washbasin and began to wash the feet of the disciples, and to wipe them* dry with the towel _⌊which he had tied around himself_⌋.* ⁶ Then he came to Simon Peter. He said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" ⁷ Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will understand after these things." ⁸ Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet _⌊forever_⌋!"* Jesus replied to him, "Unless I wash you, you do not have a share with me." ⁹ Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my* hands and my* head!" ¹⁰ Jesus said to him, "The one who has bathed _⌊only needs_⌋* to wash his* feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not all of you." ¹¹ (For he knew the one who would betray him; because of this he said, "Not all of you are clean.") ¹² So when he had washed their feet and taken his outer clothing and reclined at table again, he said to them, "Do you understand what I have done for you? ¹³ You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and you speak correctly, for I am. ¹⁴ If then I—your* Lord and Teacher—wash your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. ¹⁵ For I have given you an example, that just as I have done for you, you also do. ¹⁶ Truly, truly I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor a messenger greater than the one who sent him. ¹⁷ If you understand these things, you are blessed if you do them. ¹⁸ "I am not speaking about all of you. I know whom I have chosen, but in order that the scripture would be fulfilled, 'The one who eats my bread has lifted up his heel against me.'* ¹⁹ From now on I am telling you before it happens, in order that when it happens you may believe that I am he.* ²⁰ Truly, truly I say to you, the one who receives anyone I send receives me, and the one who receives me receives the one who sent me." ²¹ When he* had said these things, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified and said, "Truly, truly I say to you that one of you will betray me." ²² The disciples began looking* at one another, uncertain about whom he was speaking. ²³ One of his disciples—the one whom Jesus loved—was reclining _⌊close beside_⌋* Jesus. ²⁴ So Simon Peter gestured for this one to inquire who it was about whom he was speaking. ²⁵ He leaned back* accordingly against Jesus' chest and* said to him, "Lord, who is it?" ²⁶ Jesus replied, "It is he to whom I dip the piece of bread and give it* to him." Then after* dipping the piece of bread, he gave it** to Judas son of Simon Iscariot. ²⁷ And after the piece of bread, then Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to him, "What you are doing, do quickly!" ²⁸ (Now no one of those reclining at table knew for what reason he said this to him. ²⁹ For some were thinking because Judas had the money box, Jesus was telling him, "Purchase _⌊what we need_⌋* for the feast," or that he should give something to the poor.) ³⁰ So after he* had taken the piece of bread, he went out immediately. And it was night. ³¹ Then, when he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him. ³² If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and will glorify him immediately. ³³ Children, yet a little time I am with you. You will seek me and just as I said to the Jews, "Where I am going you cannot come," now I say also to you. ³⁴ "A new commandment I give to you: that you love one another—just as I have loved you, that you also love one another. ³⁵ By this everyone will know that you are my disciples—if you have love for one another." ³⁶ Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied,* "Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later." ³⁷ Peter said to him, "Lord, why am I not able to follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!" ³⁸ Jesus replied, "Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly I say to you, the rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times!

¹ Therefore, if there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, ² complete my joy, so that _⌊you are in agreement_⌋*, having the same love, united in spirit, _⌊having one purpose_⌋*. ³ Do nothing according to selfish ambition or according to empty conceit, but in humility considering one another better than yourselves, ⁴ each of you* not looking out for _⌊your own interests_⌋*, but also each of you for _⌊the interests_⌋* of others. ⁵ Think this in* yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, ⁶ who, existing in the form of God, did not consider being equal with God something to be grasped, ⁷ but emptied himself by* taking the form of a slave, by* becoming in the likeness of people. And being found in appearance like a man, ⁸ he humbled himself by* becoming obedient to the point of death, that is, death on a cross. ⁹ Therefore also God exalted him and graciously granted him the name above every name, ¹⁰ so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven and of those on earth and of those under the earth, ¹¹ and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. ¹² Therefore my dear friends, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. ¹³ For the one at work in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure, is God. ¹⁴ Do all things without grumbling and disputing, ¹⁵ in order that you may become blameless and innocent, children of God without fault* in the midst of a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you shine as stars in the world,* ¹⁶ holding fast to the word of life, for a source of pride* to me in the day of Christ, that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. ¹⁷ But even if I am being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice and rejoice with all of you. ¹⁸ And in the same way also you rejoice and rejoice with me. ¹⁹ But I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, so that I also may be encouraged when I* know _⌊your circumstances_⌋*. ²⁰ For I have no one like-minded who will sincerely be concerned about _⌊your circumstances_⌋*. ²¹ For they all seek _⌊their own interests_⌋*, not those of Jesus Christ. ²² But you know his proven character, that like a child with a father he served with me for the gospel. ²³ Therefore I hope to send him at once, as soon as I see _⌊my circumstances_⌋*. ²⁴ And I am convinced in the Lord that I myself will arrive shortly also. ²⁵ But I considered it* necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, but your messenger and servant of my need, ²⁶ because he was longing for all of you and was distressed because you had heard that he was sick. ²⁷ For indeed he was sick, coming near to death, but God had mercy on him and not on him only, but also on me, so that I would not have grief upon grief. ²⁸ Therefore I am sending him with special urgency, in order that when* you see him again you may rejoice, and I may be less anxious. ²⁹ Therefore welcome him in the Lord with all joy, and consider such people highly honored, ³⁰ because on account of the work of Christ he came near to the point of death, risking his life in order that _⌊he might make up for your inability to serve me_⌋*.

⁷ but emptied himself by* taking the form of a slave, by* becoming in the likeness of people. And being found in appearance like a man,

²⁷ For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am in your midst as the one who serves.
