⁸ Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour:

⁴ You adulterers and adulteresses, do you not know that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

¹ My brothers, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. ² For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in good apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile clothing; ³ And you have respect to him that wears the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit you here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand you there, or sit here under my footstool: ⁴ Are you not then partial in yourselves, and have become judges of evil thoughts? ⁵ Hearken, my beloved brothers, Has not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he has promised to them that love him? ⁶ But you have looked down upon the poor. Do not rich men oppres you, and draw you before the judgment seats? ⁷ Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which you are called? ⁸ If you fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, You shall love your neighbor as yourself, you do well: ⁹ But if you have respect to persons, you commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. ¹⁰ For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. ¹¹ For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if you commit no adultery, yet if you kill, you have become a transgressor of the law. ¹² So speak you, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty. ¹³ For he shall have judgment without mercy, that has showed no mercy; and mercy rejoices against judgment.

²⁶ Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.

² And be not conformed to this world: but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

⁷ And he put forth a parable to those which were invited, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them. ⁸ When you are invited of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honorable man than you be invited of him; ⁹ And he that bade you and him come and say to you, Give this man place; and you begin with shame to take the lowest room. ¹⁰ But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade you comes, he may say unto you, Friend, go up higher: then shall you have worship in the presence of them that sit at food with you. ¹¹ For whosoever exalts himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted. ¹² Then said he also to him that bade him, When you make a dinner or a supper, call not your friends, nor your brothers, neither your kinsmen, nor your rich neighbors; lest they also invite you again, and a recompense be made you. ¹³ But when you make a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: ¹⁴ And you shall be blessed; for they cannot recompense you: for you shall be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

²⁵ For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
