²³ For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

⁸ If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

¹⁰ Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. ¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank you, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. ¹² I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. ¹³ And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. ¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalts himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.

¹⁰ Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another;

⁸ When you are invited of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honorable man than you be invited of him; ⁹ And he that bade you and him come and say to you, Give this man place; and you begin with shame to take the lowest room. ¹⁰ But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade you comes, he may say unto you, Friend, go up higher: then shall you have worship in the presence of them that sit at food with you. ¹¹ For whosoever exalts himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.

¹⁰ Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

⁸ For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: ⁹ Not of works, lest any man should boast.

⁶ But he gives more grace. Therefore he says, God resists the proud, but gives grace unto the humble.
