²¹ Then came Peter unto him and said: Lord, how often shall my brother offend against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? ²² Jesus saith to him: I say not to thee, till seven times; but till seventy times seven times.

³³ Be not seduced: Evil communications corrupt good manners.

¹ Now the serpent was more subtle tha any of the beasts of the earth which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman: Why hath God commanded you, that you should not eat of every tree of paradise? ² And the woman answered him, saying: Of the fruit of the trees that are in paradise we do eat: ³ But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of paradise, God hath commanded us that we should not eat; and that we should not touch it, lest perhaps we die. ⁴ And the serpent said to the woman: No, you shall not die the death. ⁵ For God doth know that in what day soever you shall eat thereof, your eyes shall be opened: and you shall be as Gods, knowing good and evil. ⁶ And the woman saw that the tree was good to eat, and fair to the eyes, and delightful to behold: and she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave to her husband, who did eat. ⁷ And the eyes of them both were opened: and when they perceived themselves to be naked, they sewed together fig leaves, and made themselves aprons. ⁸ And when they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in paradise at the afternoon air, Adam and his wife hid themselves from the face of the Lord God, amidst the trees of paradise. ⁹ And the Lord God called Adam, and said to him: Where art thou? ¹⁰ And he said: I heard thy voice in paradise; and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself. ¹¹ And he said to him: And who hath told thee that thou wast naked, but that thou hast eaten of the tree whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldst not eat? ¹² And Adam said: The woman, whom thou gavest me to be my companion, gave me of the tree, and I did eat. ¹³ And the Lord God said to the woman: Why hast thou done this? And she answered: The serpent deceived me, and I did eat. ¹⁴ And the Lord God said to the serpent: Because thou hast done this thing, thou art cursed among all cattle, and beasts of the earth: upon thy breast shalt thou go, and earth shalt thou eat all the days of thy life. ¹⁵ I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall cursh thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel. ¹⁶ To the woman also he said: I will multiply thy sorrows, and thy conceptions: in sorrow shalt thou bring forth children, and thou shalt be under thy husband's power, and he shall have dominion over thee. ¹⁷ And to Adam he said: Because thou hast hearkened to the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee, that thou shouldst not eat, cursed is the earth in thy work: with labour and toil shalt thou eat thereof all the days of thy life. ¹⁸ Thorns and thistles shall it bring forth to thee, and thou shalt eat the herbs of the earth. ¹⁹ In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread till thou return to the earth out of which thou wast taken: for dust thou art, and into dust thou shalt return. ²⁰ And Adam called the name of his wife Eve: because she was the mother of all the living. ²¹ And the Lord God made for Adam and his wife garments of skins, and clothed them. ²² And he said: Behold Adam is become as one of us, knowing good and evil: now therefore lest perhaps he put forth his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever. ²³ And the Lord God sent him out of the paradise of pleasure, to till the earth from which he was taken. ²⁴ And he cast out Adam: and placed before the paradise of pleasure Cherubims, and a flaming sword, turning every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

³⁰ Soundness of heart is the life of the flesh: but envy is the rottenness of the bones.

⁷ But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency may be of the power of God and not of us.

⁵ For let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: ⁶ Who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: ⁷ But emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men, and in habit found as a man. ⁸ He humbled himself, becoming obedient unto death, even to the death of the cross. ⁹ For which cause, God also hath exalted him and hath given him a name which is above all names: ¹⁰ That in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those that are in heaven, on earth, and under the earth:

² Bear ye one another's burdens: and so you shall fulfil the law of Christ.

³⁴ A new commandment I give unto you: That you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another. ³⁵ By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another.

²⁷ But I say to you that hear: Love your enemies. Do good to them that hate you. ²⁸ Bless them that curse you and pray for them that calumniate you. ²⁹ And to him that striketh thee on the one cheek, offer also the other. And him that taketh away from thee thy cloak, forbid not to take thy coat also. ³⁰ Give to every one that asketh thee: and of him that taketh away thy goods, ask them not again. ³¹ And as you would that men should do to you, do you also to them in like manner. ³² And if you love them that love you, what thanks are to you? For sinners also love those that love them. ³³ And if you do good to them who do good to you, what thanks are to you? For sinners also do this. ³⁴ And if you lend to them of whom you hope to receive, what thanks are to you? For sinners also lend to sinners, for to receive as much. ³⁵ But love ye your enemies: do good, and lend, hoping for nothing thereby: and your reward shall be great, and you shall be the sons of the Highest. For he is kind to the unthankful and to the evil. ³⁶ Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

¹⁶ Confess therefore your sins one to another: and pray one for another, that you may be saved. For the continual prayer of a just man availeth much.

¹¹ Our mouth is open to you, O ye Corinthians: our heart is enlarged. ¹² You are not straitened in us: but in your own bowels you are straitened. ¹³ But having the same recompense (I speak as to my children): be you also enlarged.

⁹ And he said to me: My grace is sufficient for thee: for power is made perfect in infirmity. Gladly therefore will I glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may dwell in me. ¹⁰ For which cause I please myself in my infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ. For when I am weak, then am I powerful.

¹ James, the servant of God and of our Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. ² My brethren, count it all joy, when you shall fall into divers temptations: ³ Knowing that the trying of your faith worketh patience ⁴ And patience hath a perfect work: that you may be perfect and entire, failing in nothing. ⁵ But if any of you want wisdom, let him ask of God who giveth to all men abundantly and upbraideth not. And it shall be given him. ⁶ But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea, which is moved and carried about by the wind. ⁷ Therefore let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. ⁸ A double minded man is inconstant in all his ways. ⁹ But let the brother of low condition glory in his exaltation: ¹⁰ And the rich, in his being low: because as the flower of the grass shall he pass away. ¹¹ For the sun rose with a burning heat and parched the grass: and the flower thereof fell off, and the beauty of the shape thereof perished. So also shall the rich man fade away in his ways. ¹² Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for, when he hath been proved, he shall receive the crown of life which God hath promised to them that love him. ¹³ Let no man, when he is tempted, say that he is tempted by God. For God is not a tempter of evils: and he tempteth no man. ¹⁴ But every man is tempted by his own concupiscence, being drawn away and allured. ¹⁵ Then, when concupiscence hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin. But sin, when it is completed, begetteth death. ¹⁶ Do not err, therefore, my dearest brethren. ¹⁷ Every best gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no change nor shadow of alteration. ¹⁸ For of his own will hath he begotten us by the word of truth, that we might be some beginning of his creature. ¹⁹ You know, my dearest brethren. And let every man be swift to hear, but slow to speak and slow to anger. ²⁰ For the anger of man worketh not the justice of God. ²¹ Wherefore, casting away all uncleanness and abundance of naughtiness, with meekness receive the ingrafted word, which is able to save your souls. ²² But be ye doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. ²³ For if a man be a hearer of the word and not a doer, he shall be compared to a man beholding his own countenance in a glass. ²⁴ For he beheld himself and went his way and presently forgot what manner of man he was. ²⁵ But he that hath looked into the perfect law of liberty and hath continued therein, not becoming a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work: this man shall be blessed in his deed. ²⁶ And if any man think himself to be religious, not bridling his tongue but deceiving his own heart, this man's religion is vain. ²⁷ Religion clean and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation and to keep one's self unspotted from this world.
