¹ And in those days, the number of the disciples increasing, there arose a murmuring of the Greeks against the Hebrews, for that their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. ² Then the twelve, calling together the multitude of the disciples, said: It is not reason that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. ³ Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. ⁴ But we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word. ⁵ And the saying was liked by all the multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip and Prochorus and Nicanor, and Timon and Parmenas and Nicolas, a proselyte of Antioch. ⁶ These they set before the apostles: and they praying, imposed hands upon them. ⁷ And the word of the Lord increased: and the number of the disciples was multiplied in Jerusalem exceedingly. A great multitude also of the priests obeyed the faith. ⁸ And Stephen, full of grace and fortitude, did great wonders and signs among the people. ⁹ Now there arose some, of that which is called the synagogue of the Libertines and of the Cyrenians and of the Alexandrians and of them that were of Cilicia and Asia, disputing with Stephen. ¹⁰ And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit that spoke. ¹¹ Then they suborned men to say they had heard him speak words of blasphemy against Moses and against God. ¹² And they stirred up the people and the ancients and the scribes. And running together, they took him and brought him to the council. ¹³ And they set up false witnesses, who said: This man ceaseth not to speak words against the holy place and the law. ¹⁴ For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place and shall change the traditions which Moses delivered unto us. ¹⁵ And all that sat in the council, looking on him, saw his face as if it had been the face of an angel.

¹⁰ The thief cometh not, but for to steal and to kill and to destroy. I am come that they may have life and may have it more abundantly.

⁴² And they were persevering in the doctrine of the apostles and in the communication of the breaking of bread and in prayers.

² It behoveth therefore a bishop to be blameless, the husband of one wife, sober, prudent, of good behaviour, chaste, given to hospitality, a teacher,

And his eyes were as a flame of fire: ¹⁵ And his feet like unto fine brass, as in a burning furnace. And his voice as the sound of many waters. ¹⁶ And he had in his right hand seven stars. And from his mouth came out a sharp two-edged sword. And his face was as the sun shineth in his power. ¹⁷ And when I had seen him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying: Fear not. I am the First and the Last, ¹⁸ And alive, and was dead. And behold I am living for ever and ever and have the keys of death and of hell. ¹⁹ Write therefore the things which thou hast seen: and which are: and which must be done hereafter. ²⁰ The mystery of the seven stars, which thou sawest in my right hand and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches. And the seven candlesticks are the seven churches. ²¹ For prophecy came not by the will of man at any time: but the holy men of God spoke, inspired by the Holy Ghost.

² Whosoever shall sin, and despising the Lord, shall deny to his neighbour the thing delivered to his keeping, which was committed to his trust; or shall by force extort any thing, or commit oppression; ³ Or shall find a thing lost, and denying it, shall also swear falsely, or shall do any other of the many things, wherein men are wont to sin: ⁴ Being convicted of the offence, he shall restore ⁵ All that he would have gotten by fraud, in the principal, and the fifth part besides, to the owner, whom he wronged. ⁶ Moreover for his sin he shall offer a ram without blemish out of the flock: and shall give it to the priest, according to the estimation and measure of the offence. ⁷ And he shall pray for him before the Lord: and he shall have forgiveness for every thing in doing of which he bath sinned.

^{10 (9:11)} And let them trust in thee who know thy name: for thou hast not forsaken them that seek thee, O Lord.

⁵ Have confidence in the Lord with all thy heart, and lean not upon thy own prudence. ⁶ In all thy ways think on him, and he will direct thy steps.

¹⁶ For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son: that whosoever believeth in him may not perish, but may have life everlasting.

¹⁹ And may my God supply all your want, according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

¹⁸ But now God hath set the members, every one of them, in the body as it hath pleased him.

² But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed by the father.

¹⁰ As every man hath received grace, ministering the same one to another: as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

³ Lay open thy works to the Lord: and thy thoughts shall be directed.

¹⁴ For even as a man going into a far country called his servants and delivered to them his goods; ¹⁵ And to one he gave five talents, and to another two, and to another one, to every one according to his proper ability: and immediately he took his journey. ¹⁶ And he that had received the five talents went his way and traded with the same and gained other five. ¹⁷ And in like manner he that had received the two gained other two. ¹⁸ But he that had received the one, going his way, digged into the earth and hid his lord's money. ¹⁹ But after a long time the lord of those servants came and reckoned with them. ²⁰ And he that had received the five talents coming, brought other five talents, saying: Lord, thou didst deliver to me five talents. Behold I have gained other five over and above. ²¹ His lord said to him: Well done, good and faithful servant, because thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will place thee over many things. Enter thou into the joy of thy lord. ²² And he also that had received the two talents came and said: Lord, thou deliveredst two talents to me. Behold I have gained other two. ²³ His lord said to him: Well done, good and faithful servant: because thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will place thee over many things. Enter thou into the joy of thy lord. ²⁴ But he that had received the one talent, came and said: Lord, I know that thou art a hard man; thou reapest where thou hast not sown and gatherest where thou hast not strewed. ²⁵ And being afraid, I went and hid thy talent in the earth. Behold here thou hast that which is thine. ²⁶ And his lord answering, said to him: Wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sow not and gather where I have not strewed. ²⁷ Thou oughtest therefore to have committed my money to the bankers: and at my coming I should have received my own with usury. ²⁸ Take ye away therefore the talent from him and give it him that hath ten talents.
