¹ Take heed that you do not your justice before men, to be seen by them: otherwise you shall not have a reward of your Father who is in heaven. ² Therefore when thou dost an alms-deed, sound not a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be honoured by men. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward. ³ But when thou dost alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doth. ⁴ That thy alms may be in secret, and thy Father who seeth in secret will repay thee. ⁵ And when ye pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, that love to stand and pray in the synagogues and corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men: Amen I say to you, they have received their reward. ⁶ But thou when thou shalt pray, enter into thy chamber, and having shut the door, pray to thy Father in secret, and thy father who seeth in secret will repay thee. ⁷ And when you are praying, speak not much, as the heathens. For they think that in their much speaking they may be heard. ⁸ Be not you therefore like to them for your Father knoweth what is needful for you, before you ask him. ⁹ Thus therefore shall you pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. ¹⁰ Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. ¹¹ Give us this day our supersubstantial bread. ¹² And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. ¹³ And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. Amen. ¹⁴ For if you will forgive men their offences, your heavenly Father will forgive you also your offences. ¹⁵ But if you will not forgive men, neither will your Father forgive you your offences. ¹⁶ And when you fast, be not as the hypocrites, sad. For they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward. ¹⁷ But thou, when thou fastest anoint thy head, and wash thy face; ¹⁸ That thou appear not to men to fast, but to thy Father who is in secret: and thy Father who seeth in secret, will repay thee. ¹⁹ Lay not up to yourselves treasures on earth: where the rust, and moth consume, and where thieves break through, and steal. ²⁰ But lay up to yourselves treasures in heaven: where neither the rust nor moth doth consume, and where thieves do not break through, nor steal. ²¹ For where thy treasure is, there is thy heart also. ²² The light of thy body is thy eye. If thy eye be single, thy whole body shall be lightsome. ²³ But if thy eye be evil thy whole body shall be darksome. If then the light that is in thee, be darkness: the darkness itself how great shall it be! ²⁴ No man can serve two masters. For either he will hate the one, and love the other: or he will sustain the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. ²⁵ Therefore I say to you, be not solicitous for your life, what you shall eat, nor for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more than the meat: and the body more than the raiment? ²⁶ Behold the birds of the air, for they neither sow, nor do they reap, nor gather into barns: and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not you of much more value than they? ²⁷ And which of you by taking thought, can add to his stature one cubit? ²⁸ And for raiment why are you solicitous? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they labour not, neither do they spin. ²⁹ But I say to you, that not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed as one of these. ³⁰ And if the grass of the field, which is to day, and to morrow is cast into the oven, God doth so clothe: how much more you, O ye of little faith? ³¹ Be not solicitous therefore, saying: What shall we eat: or what shall we drink, or wherewith shall we be clothed? ³² For after all these things do the heathens seek. For your Father knoweth that you have need of all these things. ³³ Seek ye therefore first the kingdom of God, and his justice, and all these things shall be added unto you. ³⁴ Be not therefore solicitous for to morrow; for the morrow will be solicitous for itself. Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof.

³¹ And when the Son of man shall come in his majesty, and all the angels with him, then shall he sit upon the seat of his majesty. ³² And all nations shall be gathered together before him: and he shall separate them one from another, as the shepherd separateth the sheep from the goats: ³³ And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on his left. ³⁴ Then shall the king say to them that shall be on his right hand: Come, ye blessed of my Father, possess you the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. ³⁵ For I was hungry, and you gave me to eat: I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink: I was a stranger, and you took me in: ³⁶ Naked, and you covered me: sick, and you visited me: I was in prison, and you came to me. ³⁷ Then shall the just answer him, saying: Lord, when did we see thee hungry and fed thee: thirsty and gave thee drink? ³⁸ Or when did we see thee a stranger and took thee in? Or naked and covered thee? ³⁹ Or when did we see thee sick or in prison and came to thee? ⁴⁰ And the king answering shall say to them: Amen I say to you, as long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to me. ⁴¹ Then he shall say to them also that shall be on his left hand: Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire, which was prepared for the devil and his angels. ⁴² For I was hungry and you gave me not to eat: I was thirsty and you gave me not to drink. ⁴³ I was a stranger and you took me not in: naked and you covered me not: sick and in prison and you did not visit me. ⁴⁴ Then they also shall answer him, saying: Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison and did not minister to thee? ⁴⁵ Then he shall answer them, saying: Amen: I say to you, as long as you did it not to one of these least, neither did you do it to me. ⁴⁶ And these shall go into everlasting punishment: but the just, into life everlasting.

¹ I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercy of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, pleasing unto God, your reasonable service.

¹⁷ Every best gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no change nor shadow of alteration.

²¹ His lord said to him: Well done, good and faithful servant, because thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will place thee over many things. Enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

³⁵ I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring you ought to support the weak and to remember the word of the Lord Jesus, how he said: It is a more blessed thing to give, rather than to receive.

Art thou Elias? And he said: I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered: No. ²² They said therefore unto him: Who art thou, that we may give an answer to them that sent us? What sayest thou of thyself? ²³ He said: I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Isaias. ²⁴ And they that were sent were of the Pharisees. ²⁵ And they asked him and said to him: Why then dost thou baptize, if thou be not Christ, nor Elias, nor the prophet? ²⁶ John answered them, saying: I baptize with water: but there hath stood one in the midst of you, whom you know not. ²⁷ The same is he that shall come after me, who is preferred before me: the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to loose. ²⁸ These things were done in Bethania, beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. ²⁹ The next day, John saw Jesus coming to him; and he saith: Behold the Lamb of God. Behold him who taketh away the sin of the world. ³⁰ This is he of whom I said: After me there cometh a man, who is preferred before me: because he was before me. ³¹ And I knew him not: but that he may be made manifest in Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. ³² And John gave testimony, saying: I saw the Spirit coming down, as a dove from heaven; and he remained upon him. ³³ And I knew him not: but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me: He upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and remaining upon him, he it is that baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. ³⁴ And I saw: and I gave testimony that this is the Son of God. ³⁵ The next day again John stood and two of his disciples. ³⁶ And beholding Jesus walking, he saith: Behold the Lamb of God. ³⁷ And the two disciples heard him speak: and they followed Jesus. ³⁸ And Jesus turning and seeing them following him, saith to them: What seek you? Who said to him: Rabbi (which is to say, being interpreted, Master), where dwellest thou? ³⁹ He saith to them: Come and see. They came and saw where he abode: and they stayed with him that day. Now it was about the tenth hour. ⁴⁰ And Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who had heard of John and followed him. ⁴¹ He findeth first his brother Simon and saith to him: We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. ⁴² And he brought him to Jesus. And Jesus looking upon him, said: Thou art Simon the son of Jona. Thou shalt be called Cephas, which is interpreted Peter. ⁴³ On the following day, he would go forth into Galilee: and he findeth Philip, And Jesus saith to him: follow me. ⁴⁴ Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. ⁴⁵ Philip findeth Nathanael and saith to him: We have found him of whom Moses, in the law and the prophets did write, Jesus the son of Joseph of Nazareth. ⁴⁶ And Nathanael said to him: Can any thing of good come from Nazareth? Philip saith to him: Come and see. ⁴⁷ Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him and he saith of him: Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile. ⁴⁸ Nathanael saith to him: Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said to him: Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee. ⁴⁹ Nathanael answered him and said: Rabbi: Thou art the Son of God. Thou art the King of Israel. ⁵⁰ Jesus answered and said to him: Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, thou believest: greater things than these shalt thou see. ⁵¹ And he saith to him: Amen, amen, I say to you, you shall see the heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

²³ Whatsoever you do, do it from the heart, as to the Lord, and not to men:

¹² Rejoicing in hope. Patient in tribulation. Instant in prayer.

²⁷ Do not withhold him from doing good, who is able: if thou art able, do good thyself also.
