¹⁴ And king Herod heard, (for his name was made manifest,) and he said: John the Baptist is risen again from dead, and therefore mighty works shew forth themselves in him. ¹⁵ And others said: It is Elias. But others said: It is a prophet, as one of the prophets. ¹⁶ Which Herod hearing, said: John whom I beheaded, he is risen again from the dead. ¹⁷ For Herod himself had sent and apprehended John, and bound him prison for the sake of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother, because he had married her. ¹⁸ For John said to Herod: It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife. ¹⁹ Now Herodias laid snares for him: and was desirous to put him to death and could not. ²⁰ For Herod feared John, knowing him to be a just and holy man: and kept him, and when he heard him, did many things: and he heard him willingly. ²¹ And when a convenient day was come, Herod made a supper for his birthday, for the princes, and tribunes, and chief men of Galilee. ²² And when the daughter of the same Herodias had come in, and had danced, and pleased Herod, and them that were at table with him, the king said to the damsel: Ask of me what thou wilt, and I will give it thee. ²³ And he swore to her: Whatsoever thou shalt ask I will give thee, though it be the half of my kingdom. ²⁴ Who when she was gone out, said to her mother, What shall I ask? But her mother said: The head of John the Baptist. ²⁵ And when she was come in immediately with haste to the king, she asked, saying: I will that forthwith thou give me in a dish, the head of John the Baptist. ²⁶ And the king was struck sad. Yet because of his oath, and because of them that were with him at table, he would not displease her: ²⁷ But sending an executioner, he commanded that his head should be brought in a dish. ²⁸ And he beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head in a dish: and gave to the damsel, and the damsel gave it her mother. ²⁹ Which his disciples hearing came, and took his body, and laid it in a tomb.

¹ And he said to his disciples: It is impossible that scandals should not come. But woe to him through whom they come! ² It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck and he cast into the sea, than that he should scandalize one of these little ones.

¹³ Let us walk honestly, as in the day: not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and impurities, not in contention and envy.

¹⁹ Or know you not that your members are the temple of the Holy Ghost, who is in you, whom you have from God: and you are not your own?

²⁸ But I say to you, that whosoever shall look on a woman to lust after her, hath already committed adultery with her in his heart.

³ But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not so much as be named among you, as becometh saints:

¹⁹ Or know you not that your members are the temple of the Holy Ghost, who is in you, whom you have from God: and you are not your own? ²⁰ For you are bought with a great price. Glorify and bear God in your body.

⁹ Know you not that the unjust shall not possess the kingdom of God? Do not err: Neither fornicators nor idolaters nor adulterers: ¹⁰ Nor the effeminate nor liers with mankind nor thieves nor covetous nor drunkards nor railers nor extortioners shall possess the kingdom of God.

²² But flee thou youthful desires, and pursue justice, faith, charity and peace with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

⁸ But I say to the unmarried and to the widows: It is good for them if they so continue, even as I. ⁹ But if they do not contain themselves, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to be burnt.

¹³ Let no temptation take hold on you, but such as is human. And God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that which you are able: but will make also with temptation issue, that you may be able to bear it.

¹⁹ Now the works of the flesh are manifest: which are fornication, uncleanness, immodesty, luxury, ²⁰ Idolatry, witchcrafts, enmities, contentions, emulations, wraths, quarrels, dissensions, sects, ²¹ Envies, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like. Of the which I foretell you, as I have foretold to you, that they who do such things shall not obtain the kingdom of God.

¹⁸ Fly fornication. Every sin that a man doth is without the body: but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.
