²¹ And God created the great whales, and every living and moving creature, which the waters brought forth, according to their kinds, and every winged fowl according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

¹ The praise of a canticle for David. He that dwelleth in the aid of the most High, shall abide under the protection of the God of Jacob. ² He shall say to the Lord: Thou art my protector, and my refuge: my God, in him will I trust. ³ For he hath delivered me from the snare of the hunters: and from the sharp word. ⁴ He will overshadow thee with his shoulders: and under his wings thou shalt trust. ⁵ His truth shall compass thee with a shield: thou shalt not be afraid of the terror of the night. ⁶ Of the arrow that flieth in the day, of the business that walketh about in the dark: of invasion, or of the noonday devil. ⁷ A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand: but it shall not come nigh thee. ⁸ But thou shalt consider with thy eyes: and shalt see the reward of the wicked. ⁹ Because thou, O Lord, art my hope: thou hast made the most High thy refuge. ¹⁰ There shall no evil come to thee: nor shall the scourge come near thy dwelling. ¹¹ For he hath given his angels charge over thee; to keep thee in all thy ways. ¹² In their hands they shall bear thee up: lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. ¹³ Thou shalt walk upon the asp and the basilisk: and thou shalt trample under foot the lion and the dragon. ¹⁴ Because he hoped in me I will deliver him: I will protect him because he hath known my name. ¹⁵ He shall cry to me, and I will hear him: I am with him in tribulation, I will deliver him, and I will glorify him. ¹⁶ I will fill him with length of days; and I will shew him my salvation.

⁸ As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that leaveth his place.

²⁹ Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and not one of them shall fall on the ground without your Father.

¹⁶ Behold I send you as sheep in the midst of wolves. Be ye therefore wise as serpents and simple as doves.

³² Which is the least indeed of all seeds; but when it is grown up, it is greater than all herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come, and dwell in the branches thereof.

²⁴ Consider the ravens, for they sow not, neither do they reap, neither have they storehouse nor barn, and God feedeth them. How much are you more valuable than they?

²⁰ God also said: let the waters bring forth the creeping creature having life, and the fowl that may fly over the earth under the firmament of heaven.

¹¹ I know all the fowls of the air: and with me is the beauty of the field.

³¹ But they that hope in the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall take wings as eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

¹² Over them the birds of the air shall dwell: from the midst of the rocks they shall give forth their voices.

²⁶ Behold the birds of the air, for they neither sow, nor do they reap, nor gather into barns: and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not you of much more value than they?

²⁵ Therefore I say to you, be not solicitous for your life, what you shall eat, nor for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more than the meat: and the body more than the raiment? ²⁶ Behold the birds of the air, for they neither sow, nor do they reap, nor gather into barns: and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not you of much more value than they? ²⁷ And which of you by taking thought, can add to his stature one cubit? ²⁸ And for raiment why are you solicitous? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they labour not, neither do they spin. ²⁹ But I say to you, that not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed as one of these. ³⁰ And if the grass of the field, which is to day, and to morrow is cast into the oven, God doth so clothe: how much more you, O ye of little faith? ³¹ Be not solicitous therefore, saying: What shall we eat: or what shall we drink, or wherewith shall we be clothed? ³² For after all these things do the heathens seek. For your Father knoweth that you have need of all these things. ³³ Seek ye therefore first the kingdom of God, and his justice, and all these things shall be added unto you. ³⁴ Be not therefore solicitous for to morrow; for the morrow will be solicitous for itself. Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof.
