¹⁷ You shall not hate your brother in your heart: you shall surely rebuke your neighbor, so you shall not bear sin on his account.

²² Say not, I will avenge myself on my enemy, but wait on the Lord, that He may help you.

¹⁸ Righteous lips cover enmity, but they that utter railings are most foolish.

⁴³ "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor, and you shall hate your enemy.' ⁴⁴ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you, ⁴⁵ so that you may prove to be sons of your Father in heaven; because He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and He sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

¹⁹ Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are: adultery, fornication, immorality, lewdness, ²⁰ idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, ²¹ envies, murders, drinking bouts, revelries, and the like; which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

¹ From where come wars and disputes among you? Is it not from here, from your lusts, which war in your members? ² You lust and you do not have. You murder and are jealous and you cannot obtain. You fight and make war. You do not have because you do not ask. ³ You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend it in gratifying your lusts. ⁴ Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world is constituted an enemy of God. ⁵ Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, "The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously"? ⁶ But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble." ⁷ Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. ⁸ Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. ⁹ Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter change into mourning and your joy into dejection. ¹⁰ Be humbled before the Lord, and He will exalt you. ¹¹ Do not speak evil of one another, brothers. He who speaks evil against a brother and judges his brother speaks against the law and judges the law. And if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. ¹² There is one Lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you who judges the other? ¹³ Come now, you who say, "Today and tomorrow let us travel to this city, and let us spend a year there, and let us trade and make a profit"-- ¹⁴ you who do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? For it will be a vapor that appears for a little time, but then also disappears. ¹⁵ Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that." ¹⁶ But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. ¹⁷ Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.

²⁷ "But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, ²⁸ bless those who curse you; pray for those who mistreat you. ²⁹ To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes your outer garment, do not forbid the tunic either. ³⁰ Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your belongings, do not ask for them back. ³¹ And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise. ³² But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. ³³ And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. ³⁴ And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive it back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners, so that they may receive the same amount back. ³⁵ But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping to receive nothing back; and your reward shall be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. ³⁶ Therefore be compassionate, just as your Father also is compassionate.

²⁴ A weeping enemy promises all things with his lips, but in his heart he contrives deceit. ²⁵ Though your enemy intreat you with a loud voice, consent not: for there are seven abominations in his heart. ²⁶ He that hides enmity frames deceit, but being easily discerned, exposes his own sins in the public assemblies.

¹⁸ "If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you.

¹¹ But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

⁴⁴ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you,

¹⁵ But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

¹² Hatred stirs up strife, but affection covers all that do not love strife.

⁹ He who says that he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now.

²⁰ If anyone claims, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how is it possible for him to love God whom he has not seen?
