¹⁷ Τοῦτο (This) οὖν (therefore) λέγω (I say) καὶ (and) μαρτύρομαι (testify) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord): μηκέτι (No longer) ὑμᾶς (are you) περιπατεῖν (to walk) καθὼς (as) καὶ (also) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles) περιπατεῖ (are walking), ἐν (in) ματαιότητι (the futility) τοῦ (of the) νοὸς (mind) αὐτῶν (of them), ¹⁸ ἐσκοτωμένοι (being darkened) τῇ (in the) διανοίᾳ (understanding), ὄντες (being) ἀπηλλοτριωμένοι (alienated from) τῆς (the) ζωῆς (life) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) ἄγνοιαν (ignorance) τὴν (-) οὖσαν (being) ἐν (in) αὐτοῖς (them), διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) πώρωσιν (hardness) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart) αὐτῶν (of them), ¹⁹ οἵτινες (who) ἀπηλγηκότες (having cast off all feeling), ἑαυτοὺς (themselves) παρέδωκαν (have given up) τῇ (to) ἀσελγείᾳ (sensuality), εἰς (for) ἐργασίαν (the working) ἀκαθαρσίας (of impurity), πάσης (all) ἐν (with) πλεονεξίᾳ (greediness). ²⁰ Ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) οὐχ (not) οὕτως (this way) ἐμάθετε (learned) τὸν (-) Χριστόν (Christ),

²² Τὰς (-) δὲ (And) νεωτερικὰς (youthful) ἐπιθυμίας (lusts) φεῦγε (flee); δίωκε (pursue) δὲ (now) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness), πίστιν (faith), ἀγάπην (love), εἰρήνην (and peace), μετὰ (along with) τῶν (those) ἐπικαλουμένων (calling on) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) ἐκ (out of) καθαρᾶς (pure) καρδίας (a heart).

⁴ οὐδεὶς (No one) στρατευόμενος (serving as a soldier) ἐμπλέκεται (entangles himself) ταῖς (in the) τοῦ (of this) βίου (life) πραγματείαις (affairs), ἵνα (that) τῷ (the one) στρατολογήσαντι (having enlisted him), ἀρέσῃ (he might please).

¹⁴ ὡς (as) τέκνα (children) ὑπακοῆς (of obedience), μὴ (not) συσχηματιζόμενοι (fashioning yourselves) ταῖς (to the) πρότερον (former) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀγνοίᾳ (ignorance) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires).

¹¹ Ἀγαπητοί (Beloved), παρακαλῶ (I exhort you) ὡς (as) παροίκους (aliens) καὶ (and) παρεπιδήμους (sojourners), ἀπέχεσθαι (to abstain) τῶν (from) σαρκικῶν (fleshly) ἐπιθυμιῶν (desires), αἵτινες (which) στρατεύονται (war) κατὰ (against) τῆς (the) ψυχῆς (soul), ¹² Οὗτοι (These) δέ (however), ὡς (like) ἄλογα (irrational) ζῷα (animals), γεγεννημένα (having been born) φυσικὰ (as creatures of instinct) εἰς (for) ἅλωσιν (capture) καὶ (and) φθοράν (destruction), ἐν (in) οἷς (what) ἀγνοοῦσιν (they are ignorant of), βλασφημοῦντες (blaspheming), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) φθορᾷ (destruction) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (also) φθαρήσονται (will be destroyed), ¹³ ἀδικούμενοι (suffering wrong) μισθὸν (as the wage) ἀδικίας (of unrighteousness); ἡδονὴν (as pleasure) ἡγούμενοι (esteeming) τὴν (-) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (daytime) τρυφήν (carousal); σπίλοι (blots) καὶ (and) μῶμοι (blemishes), ἐντρυφῶντες (reveling) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἀπάταις (deceptions) αὐτῶν (of them), συνευωχούμενοι (feasting with) ὑμῖν (you); ¹⁴ ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) ἔχοντες (having) μεστοὺς (full) μοιχαλίδος (of adultery), καὶ (and) ἀκαταπαύστους (unceasing) ἁμαρτίας (from sin), δελεάζοντες (enticing) ψυχὰς (souls) ἀστηρίκτους (unestablished); καρδίαν (a heart) γεγυμνασμένην (having been exercised) πλεονεξίας (in craving) ἔχοντες (having)— κατάρας (of a curse) τέκνα (children)! ¹⁵ Καταλιπόντες (Having left) εὐθεῖαν (the straight) ὁδὸν (way), ἐπλανήθησαν (they have gone astray), ἐξακολουθήσαντες (having followed) τῇ (in the) ὁδῷ (way) τοῦ (-) Βαλαὰμ (of Balaam) τοῦ (-) Βοσὸρ* (son of Bosor), ὃς (who) μισθὸν (the wage) ἀδικίας (of unrighteousness) ἠγάπησεν (loved);

¹⁹ Οὗτοί (These) εἰσιν (are) οἱ (those) ἀποδιορίζοντες (causing divisions), ψυχικοί (worldly-minded), Πνεῦμα (the Spirit) μὴ (not) ἔχοντες (having).

¹⁹ εἰ (If) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) ἦτε (you were), ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) ἂν (-) τὸ (as its) ἴδιον (own) ἐφίλει (would love you); ὅτι (because) δὲ (however) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) οὐκ (not) ἐστέ (you are), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐγὼ (I) ἐξελεξάμην (chose) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world), διὰ (on account of) τοῦτο (this) μισεῖ (hates) ὑμᾶς (you) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world).

¹² παιδεύουσα (instructing) ἡμᾶς (us) ἵνα (that), ἀρνησάμενοι (having denied) τὴν (-) ἀσέβειαν (ungodliness) καὶ (and) τὰς (-) κοσμικὰς (worldly) ἐπιθυμίας (passions), σωφρόνως (discreetly) καὶ (and) δικαίως (righteously) καὶ (and) εὐσεβῶς (piously) ζήσωμεν (we should live) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νῦν (present) αἰῶνι (age),

¹⁵ Μὴ (Not) ἀγαπᾶτε (love) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) μηδὲ (nor) τὰ (the things) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world). ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) ἀγαπᾷ (should love) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) τοῦ (of the) Πατρὸς (Father) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him), ¹⁶ ὅτι (because) πᾶν (all) τὸ (that is) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world), ἡ (the) ἐπιθυμία (desire) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἐπιθυμία (desire) τῶν (of the) ὀφθαλμῶν (eyes), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀλαζονεία* (vaunting) τοῦ (of) βίου (life), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) πατρός (Father), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) ἐστίν (is).

⁴ Μοιχαλίδες (Adulteresses)! οὐκ (Not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) ἡ (the) φιλία (friendship) τοῦ (with the) κόσμου (world), ἔχθρα (hostility) τοῦ (with) Θεοῦ (God) ἐστιν (is)? ὃς (Whoever) ἐὰν (if) οὖν (therefore) βουληθῇ (has chosen) φίλος (a friend) εἶναι (to be) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world), ἐχθρὸς (an enemy) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καθίσταται (is appointed).

² τὰ (The things) ἄνω (above) φρονεῖτε (set your minds on), μὴ (not) τὰ (the things) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth).

² καὶ (And) μὴ (not) συσχηματίζεσθε (be conformed) τῷ (to the) αἰῶνι (age) τούτῳ (this), ἀλλὰ (but) μεταμορφοῦσθε (be transformed) τῇ (by the) ἀνακαινώσει (renewing) τοῦ (of the) νοός (mind), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) δοκιμάζειν (to prove) ὑμᾶς (by you), τί (what is) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τὸ (-) ἀγαθὸν (good) καὶ (and) εὐάρεστον (well-pleasing) καὶ (and) τέλειον (perfect).

¹⁵ Μὴ (Not) ἀγαπᾶτε (love) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) μηδὲ (nor) τὰ (the things) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world). ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) ἀγαπᾷ (should love) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) τοῦ (of the) Πατρὸς (Father) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him), ¹⁶ ὅτι (because) πᾶν (all) τὸ (that is) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world), ἡ (the) ἐπιθυμία (desire) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἐπιθυμία (desire) τῶν (of the) ὀφθαλμῶν (eyes), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀλαζονεία* (vaunting) τοῦ (of) βίου (life), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) πατρός (Father), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) ἐστίν (is). ¹⁷ καὶ (And) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) παράγεται (is passing away), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἐπιθυμία (desire) αὐτοῦ (of it); ὁ (the one) δὲ (however) ποιῶν (doing) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) μένει (abides) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age).
