¹⁸ Λογίζομαι (I reckon) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) ἄξια (comparable) τὰ (the) παθήματα (sufferings) τοῦ (of the) νῦν (present) καιροῦ (time are) πρὸς (to) τὴν (the) μέλλουσαν (coming) δόξαν (glory) ἀποκαλυφθῆναι (to be revealed) εἰς (to) ἡμᾶς (us). ¹⁹ ἡ (The) γὰρ (for) ἀποκαραδοκία (earnest expectation) τῆς (of the) κτίσεως (creation), τὴν (the) ἀποκάλυψιν (revelation) τῶν (of the) υἱῶν (sons) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἀπεκδέχεται (awaits). ²⁰ τῇ (To the) γὰρ (for) ματαιότητι (futility), ἡ (the) κτίσις (creation) ὑπετάγη (was subjected), οὐχ (not) ἑκοῦσα (willingly), ἀλλὰ (but) διὰ (because of) τὸν (the One) ὑποτάξαντα (having subjected it), ἐφ’ (in) ἑλπίδι (hope) ²¹ ὅτι* (that) καὶ (also) αὐτὴ (itself) ἡ (the) κτίσις (creation) ἐλευθερωθήσεται (will be set free) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) δουλείας (bondage) τῆς (-) φθορᾶς (of decay), εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ἐλευθερίαν (freedom) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τῶν (of the) τέκνων (children) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ²² Οἴδαμεν (We know) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) πᾶσα (all) ἡ (the) κτίσις (creation) συστενάζει (groans together) καὶ (and) συνωδίνει (travails together) ἄχρι (until) τοῦ (-) νῦν (now). ²³ οὐ (Not) μόνον (only so) δέ (now), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (even) αὐτοὶ (ourselves), τὴν (the) ἀπαρχὴν (firstfruit) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) ἔχοντες (having), ἡμεῖς (we) καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (ourselves) ἐν (in) ἑαυτοῖς (ourselves) στενάζομεν (groan), υἱοθεσίαν (divine adoption as sons) ἀπεκδεχόμενοι (awaiting), τὴν (the) ἀπολύτρωσιν (redemption) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body) ἡμῶν (of us). ²⁴ τῇ (In this) γὰρ (for) ἐλπίδι (hope) ἐσώθημεν (we were saved); ἐλπὶς (hope) δὲ (however) βλεπομένη (being seen), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐλπίς (hope); ὃ (what) γὰρ (for) βλέπει (sees) τις (any) τί (one), ἐλπίζει (does he hope for)? ²⁵ εἰ (If) δὲ (however), ὃ (what) οὐ (not) βλέπομεν (we see) ἐλπίζομεν (we hope for), δι’ (in) ὑπομονῆς (patience) ἀπεκδεχόμεθα (we await).

² ὁ (-) γὰρ (For) νόμος (the law) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) τῆς (of) ζωῆς (life) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) ἠλευθέρωσέν (has set free) σε (you) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (of sin) καὶ (and) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (of death).

¹⁸ ἵνα (so that) διὰ (by) δύο (two) πραγμάτων (things) ἀμεταθέτων (unchangeable), ἐν (in) οἷς (which) ἀδύνατον (it is impossible) ψεύσασθαι (to lie) [τὸν] (-) Θεόν (for God), ἰσχυρὰν (strong) παράκλησιν (encouragement) ἔχωμεν (we may have), οἱ (-) καταφυγόντες (having fled for refuge), κρατῆσαι (to take hold) τῆς (of the) προκειμένης (being set before us) ἐλπίδος (hope),

⁶ ὃς (who) καὶ (also) ἱκάνωσεν (has made competent) ἡμᾶς (us as) διακόνους (ministers) καινῆς (of a new) διαθήκης (covenant), οὐ (not) γράμματος (of the letter) ἀλλὰ (but) πνεύματος (of the Spirit); τὸ (the) γὰρ (for) γράμμα (letter) ἀποκτέννει* (kills), τὸ (-) δὲ (but) πνεῦμα (the Spirit) ζωοποιεῖ (gives life).

¹ Παῦλος (Paul) ἀπόστολος (an apostle) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) διὰ (by) θελήματος (the will) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) Τιμόθεος (Timothy) ὁ (the) ἀδελφὸς (brother), ² Τοῖς (To the) ἐν (in) Κολοσσαῖς (Colossae) ἁγίοις (saints) καὶ (and) πιστοῖς (faithful) ἀδελφοῖς (brothers) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ): Χάρις (Grace) ὑμῖν (to you) καὶ (and) εἰρήνη (peace) ἀπὸ (from) Θεοῦ (God) Πατρὸς (the Father) ἡμῶν (of us). ³ Εὐχαριστοῦμεν (We give thanks) τῷ (to the) Θεῷ (God) Πατρὶ (and Father) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), πάντοτε (continually) περὶ (for) ὑμῶν (you) προσευχόμενοι (praying), ⁴ ἀκούσαντες (having heard of) τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ἀγάπην (love) ἣν (that) ἔχετε (you have) εἰς (toward) πάντας (all) τοὺς (the) ἁγίους (saints), ⁵ διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) ἐλπίδα (hope) τὴν (-) ἀποκειμένην (being laid up) ὑμῖν (for you) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens), ἣν (which) προηκούσατε (you heard of before) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) λόγῳ (word) τῆς (of) ἀληθείας (truth), τοῦ (the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel), ⁶ τοῦ (the one) παρόντος (being present) εἰς (unto) ὑμᾶς (you), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) παντὶ (all) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) ἐστὶν (it is) καρποφορούμενον (bearing fruit) καὶ (and) αὐξανόμενον (increasing), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), ἀφ’ (from) ἧς (the) ἡμέρας (day) ἠκούσατε (you heard) καὶ (and) ἐπέγνωτε (knew) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) ἀληθείᾳ (truth), ⁷ καθὼς (just as) ἐμάθετε (you learned) ἀπὸ (from) Ἐπαφρᾶ (Epaphras), τοῦ (the) ἀγαπητοῦ (beloved) συνδούλου (fellow bond-servant) ἡμῶν (of us), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) πιστὸς (faithful) ὑπὲρ (on behalf of) ἡμῶν* (us), διάκονος (a servant) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ⁸ ὁ (the one) καὶ (also) δηλώσας (having made known) ἡμῖν (to us) τὴν (-) ὑμῶν (your) ἀγάπην (love) ἐν (in) Πνεύματι (the Spirit). ⁹ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) ἀφ’ (from) ἧς (the) ἡμέρας (day) ἠκούσαμεν (we heard), οὐ (not) παυόμεθα (cease) ὑπὲρ (for) ὑμῶν (you) προσευχόμενοι (praying) καὶ (and) αἰτούμενοι (asking) ἵνα (that) πληρωθῆτε (you may be filled with) τὴν (the) ἐπίγνωσιν (knowledge) τοῦ (of the) θελήματος (will) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) σοφίᾳ (wisdom) καὶ (and) συνέσει (understanding) πνευματικῇ (spiritual), ¹⁰ περιπατῆσαι (to walk) ἀξίως (worthily) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord): εἰς (in) πᾶσαν (all) ἀρεσκείαν (pleasing), ἐν (in) παντὶ (every) ἔργῳ (work) ἀγαθῷ (good), καρποφοροῦντες (bringing forth fruit) καὶ (and) αὐξανόμενοι (growing) τῇ (in the) ἐπιγνώσει (knowledge) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ¹¹ ἐν (with) πάσῃ (all) δυνάμει (power) δυναμούμενοι (being strengthened) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) κράτος (might) τῆς (-) δόξης (glorious) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (unto) πᾶσαν (all) ὑπομονὴν (endurance) καὶ (and) μακροθυμίαν (patience) μετὰ (with) χαρᾶς (joy), ¹² εὐχαριστοῦντες (giving thanks) τῷ (to the) Πατρὶ (Father), τῷ (the One) ἱκανώσαντι (having qualified) ὑμᾶς (you) εἰς (for) τὴν (the) μερίδα (share) τοῦ (of the) κλήρου (inheritance) τῶν (of the) ἁγίων (saints) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) φωτί (light), ¹³ ὃς (who) ἐρρύσατο (has delivered) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) ἐξουσίας (dominion) τοῦ (-) σκότους (of darkness) καὶ (and) μετέστησεν (transferred us) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τῆς (-) ἀγάπης (beloved) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ¹⁴ ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) ἔχομεν (we have) τὴν (-) ἀπολύτρωσιν (redemption), τὴν (the) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) τῶν (-) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins). ¹⁵ Ὅς (He) ἐστιν (is) εἰκὼν (the image) τοῦ (of the) Θεοῦ (God) τοῦ (-) ἀοράτου (invisible), πρωτότοκος (the firstborn) πάσης (over all) κτίσεως (creation), ¹⁶ ὅτι (because) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) ἐκτίσθη (were created) τὰ (-) πάντα (all things) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens) καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), τὰ (the) ὁρατὰ (visible) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) ἀόρατα (invisible), εἴτε (whether) θρόνοι (thrones) εἴτε (or) κυριότητες (dominions) εἴτε (or) ἀρχαὶ (rulers) εἴτε (or) ἐξουσίαι (authorities); τὰ (-) πάντα (all things) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him) καὶ (and) εἰς (unto) αὐτὸν (Him) ἔκτισται (have been created). ¹⁷ Καὶ (And) αὐτός (He) ἐστιν (is) πρὸ (before) πάντων (all things), καὶ (and) τὰ (-) πάντα (all things) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) συνέστηκεν (hold together). ¹⁸ καὶ (And) αὐτός (He) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) κεφαλὴ (head) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body), τῆς (the) ἐκκλησίας (church), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) (ἡ) (the) ἀρχή (beginning), πρωτότοκος (firstborn) ἐκ (out from) τῶν (the) νεκρῶν (dead), ἵνα (so that) γένηται (might be) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all things) αὐτὸς (He) πρωτεύων (holding preeminence), ¹⁹ ὅτι (because) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) εὐδόκησεν (was pleased) πᾶν (all) τὸ (the) πλήρωμα (fullness) κατοικῆσαι (to dwell), ²⁰ καὶ (and) δι’ (by) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἀποκαταλλάξαι (to reconcile) τὰ (-) πάντα (all things) εἰς (to) αὐτόν (Himself), εἰρηνοποιήσας (having made peace) διὰ (by) τοῦ (the) αἵματος (blood) τοῦ (of the) σταυροῦ (cross) αὐτοῦ (of Him), δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him), εἴτε (whether) τὰ (the things) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), εἴτε (or) τὰ (the things) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens). ²¹ Καὶ (And) ὑμᾶς (you), ποτε (once) ὄντας (being) ἀπηλλοτριωμένους (alienated) καὶ (and) ἐχθροὺς (hostile) τῇ (-) διανοίᾳ (in mind) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἔργοις (deeds) τοῖς (-) πονηροῖς (evil), ²² νυνὶ (now) δὲ (however) ἀποκατήλλαξεν (He has reconciled You) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σώματι (body) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) αὐτοῦ (of Him) διὰ (through) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (death), παραστῆσαι (to present) ὑμᾶς (you) ἁγίους (holy) καὶ (and) ἀμώμους (unblemished) καὶ (and) ἀνεγκλήτους (blameless) κατενώπιον (before) αὐτοῦ (Him), ²³ εἴ (if) γε (indeed) ἐπιμένετε (you continue) τῇ (-) πίστει (in the faith), τεθεμελιωμένοι (established) καὶ (and) ἑδραῖοι (firm), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) μετακινούμενοι (being moved away) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) ἐλπίδος (hope) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel) οὗ (that) ἠκούσατε (you have heard), τοῦ (-) κηρυχθέντος (having been proclaimed) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) κτίσει (creation) τῇ (-) ὑπὸ (under) τὸν (-) οὐρανόν (heaven), οὗ (of which) ἐγενόμην (have become) ἐγὼ (I) Παῦλος (Paul) διάκονος (a minister). ²⁴ Νῦν (Now) χαίρω (I rejoice) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) παθήμασιν (sufferings) ὑπὲρ (for) ὑμῶν (you), καὶ (and) ἀνταναπληρῶ (I am filling up) τὰ (that which) ὑστερήματα (is lacking) τῶν (of the) θλίψεων (tribulations) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σαρκί (flesh) μου (of me) ὑπὲρ (for) τοῦ (the) σώματος (body) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) ἐκκλησία (church), ²⁵ ἧς (of which) ἐγενόμην (became) ἐγὼ (I) διάκονος (a minister), κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) οἰκονομίαν (administration) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τὴν (-) δοθεῖσάν (having been given) μοι (me) εἰς (toward) ὑμᾶς (you), πληρῶσαι (to complete) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ²⁶ τὸ (the) μυστήριον (mystery) τὸ (-) ἀποκεκρυμμένον (having been hidden) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) αἰώνων (ages) καὶ (and) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) γενεῶν (generations), νῦν (now) δὲ (however) ἐφανερώθη (having been manifested) τοῖς (to the) ἁγίοις (saints) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ²⁷ οἷς (to whom) ἠθέλησεν (has willed) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) γνωρίσαι (to make known) τί (what is) τὸ (the) πλοῦτος (riches) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (of the) μυστηρίου (mystery) τούτου (this) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles), ὅ* (which) ἐστιν (is) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you), ἡ (the) ἐλπὶς (hope) τῆς (-) δόξης (of glory), ²⁸ ὃν (whom) ἡμεῖς (we) καταγγέλλομεν (preach), νουθετοῦντες (admonishing) πάντα (every) ἄνθρωπον (man) καὶ (and) διδάσκοντες (teaching) πάντα (every) ἄνθρωπον (man) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) σοφίᾳ (wisdom), ἵνα (so that) παραστήσωμεν (we may present) πάντα (every) ἄνθρωπον (man) τέλειον (perfect) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ). ²⁹ Εἰς (Unto) ὃ (this) καὶ (also) κοπιῶ (I toil), ἀγωνιζόμενος (striving) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) ἐνέργειαν (energy) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τὴν (-) ἐνεργουμένην (working) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) ἐν (in) δυνάμει (power).

⁵ Καὶ (And) αὐτὸ (very reason) τοῦτο (for this) δὲ (now), σπουδὴν (earnestness) πᾶσαν (all) παρεισενέγκαντες (having brought in), ἐπιχορηγήσατε (supplement) ἐν (into) τῇ (the) πίστει (faith) ὑμῶν (of you) τὴν (-) ἀρετήν (virtue), ἐν (into) δὲ (and) τῇ (-) ἀρετῇ (virtue) τὴν (-) γνῶσιν (knowledge), ⁶ ἐν (into) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) γνώσει (knowledge) τὴν (-) ἐγκράτειαν (self-control), ἐν (into) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) ἐγκρατείᾳ (self-control) τὴν (-) ὑπομονήν (endurance), ἐν (into) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) ὑπομονῇ (endurance) τὴν (-) εὐσέβειαν (godliness), ⁷ ἐν (in) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) εὐσεβείᾳ (godliness) τὴν (-) φιλαδελφίαν (brotherly affection), ἐν (in) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) φιλαδελφίᾳ (brotherly affection) τὴν (-) ἀγάπην (love). ⁸ ταῦτα (These things) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (in you) ὑπάρχοντα (being) καὶ (and) πλεονάζοντα (abounding), οὐκ (neither) ἀργοὺς (idle) οὐδὲ (nor) ἀκάρπους (unfruitful) καθίστησιν (make you), εἰς (as to) τὴν (the) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ἐπίγνωσιν (knowledge).

² Πρεσβύτας (The aged men) νηφαλίους (sober-minded) εἶναι (are to be), σεμνούς (dignified), σώφρονας (self-controlled), ὑγιαίνοντας (sound) τῇ (-) πίστει (in faith), τῇ (-) ἀγάπῃ (in love), τῇ (-) ὑπομονῇ (in endurance);

² Πᾶσαν (All) χαρὰν (joy) ἡγήσασθε (esteem it), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of me), ὅταν (when) πειρασμοῖς (trials) περιπέσητε (you might fall into) ποικίλοις (various), ³ γινώσκοντες (knowing) ὅτι (that) τὸ (the) δοκίμιον (testing) ὑμῶν (of your) τῆς (-) πίστεως (faith) κατεργάζεται (produces) ὑπομονήν (endurance). ⁴ ἡ (-) δὲ (And) ὑπομονὴ (endurance), ἔργον (work) τέλειον (its perfect) ἐχέτω (let have), ἵνα (so that) ἦτε (you may be) τέλειοι (perfect) καὶ (and) ὁλόκληροι (complete), ἐν (in) μηδενὶ (nothing) λειπόμενοι (lacking).

¹² Μακάριος (Blessed is the) ἀνὴρ (man) ὃς (who) ὑπομένει (endures) πειρασμόν (trial), ὅτι (because) δόκιμος (approved) γενόμενος (having been), λήμψεται (he will receive) τὸν (the) στέφανον (crown) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life) ὃν (that) ἐπηγγείλατο (He has promised) τοῖς (to those) ἀγαπῶσιν (loving) αὐτόν (Him).

⁵⁸ Ὥστε (Therefore), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of me) ἀγαπητοί (beloved), ἑδραῖοι (steadfast) γίνεσθε (be), ἀμετακίνητοι (immovable), περισσεύοντες (abounding) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἔργῳ (work) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) πάντοτε (always), εἰδότες (knowing) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) κόπος (toil) ὑμῶν (of you) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) κενὸς (in vain) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord).
