⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said), “Γέγραπται (It has been written): ‘Οὐκ (Not) ἐπ’ (by) ἄρτῳ (bread) μόνῳ (alone) ζήσεται (shall live) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man), Ἀλλ’ (but) ἐπὶ (by) παντὶ (every) ῥήματι (word) ἐκπορευομένῳ (coming out) διὰ (of) στόματος (the mouth) Θεοῦ (of God).’”

⁷ ὑποκριταί (Hypocrites)! καλῶς (Rightly) ἐπροφήτευσεν (prophesied) περὶ (concerning) ὑμῶν (you) Ἠσαΐας (Isaiah), λέγων (saying), ⁸ ‘Ὁ (The) λαὸς (people) οὗτος (this), τοῖς (with the) χείλεσίν (lips) με (Me) τιμᾷ (it honors); Ἡ (the) δὲ (however) καρδία (heart) αὐτῶν (of them), πόρρω (far away) ἀπέχει (is kept) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me); ⁹ Μάτην (in vain) δὲ (then) σέβονταί (they worship) με (Me), Διδάσκοντες (teaching as) διδασκαλίας (doctrines) ἐντάλματα (the precepts) ἀνθρώπων (of men).’”

¹⁷ μηδενὶ (To no one) κακὸν (evil) ἀντὶ (for) κακοῦ (evil) ἀποδιδόντες (repaying), προνοούμενοι (providing) καλὰ (right) ἐνώπιον (before) πάντων (all) ἀνθρώπων (men); ¹⁸ εἰ (if) δυνατόν (possible) τὸ (-) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (you), μετὰ (with) πάντων (all) ἀνθρώπων (men) εἰρηνεύοντες (living at peace); ¹⁹ μὴ (never) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) ἐκδικοῦντες (avenging), ἀγαπητοί (beloved); ἀλλὰ (instead) δότε (give) τόπον (place) τῇ (-) ὀργῇ (to wrath); γέγραπται (it has been written) γάρ (for): “Ἐμοὶ (Mine is) ἐκδίκησις (vengeance), ἐγὼ (I) ἀνταποδώσω (will repay), λέγει (says the) Κύριος (Lord).” ²⁰ Ἀλλὰ (On the contrary), “Ἐὰν (If) πεινᾷ (should hunger) ὁ (the) ἐχθρός (enemy) σου (of you), ψώμιζε (feed) αὐτόν (him); ἐὰν (if) διψᾷ (he should thirst), πότιζε (give drink) αὐτόν (him); τοῦτο (this) γὰρ (for) ποιῶν (doing), ἄνθρακας (coals) πυρὸς (of fire) σωρεύσεις (you will heap) ἐπὶ (upon) τὴν (the) κεφαλὴν (head) αὐτοῦ (of him).” ²¹ Μὴ (Not) νικῶ (be overcome) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (-) κακοῦ (evil), ἀλλὰ (but) νίκα (overcome) ἐν (with) τῷ (-) ἀγαθῷ (good) τὸ (-) κακόν (evil).

¹⁸ Παιδία (Little children), ἐσχάτη (the last) ὥρα (hour) ἐστίν (it is), καὶ (and) καθὼς (as) ἠκούσατε (you have heard) ὅτι (that) ἀντίχριστος (antichrist) ἔρχεται (is coming), καὶ (even) νῦν (now) ἀντίχριστοι (antichrists) πολλοὶ (many) γεγόνασιν (have arisen), ὅθεν (whereby) γινώσκομεν (we know) ὅτι (that) ἐσχάτη (the last) ὥρα (hour) ἐστίν (it is).

⁸ Πάλιν (Again) παραλαμβάνει (takes) αὐτὸν (Him) ὁ (the) διάβολος (devil) εἰς (to) ὄρος (a mountain) ὑψηλὸν (high) λίαν (exceedingly), καὶ (and) δείκνυσιν (shows) αὐτῷ (to Him) πάσας (all) τὰς (the) βασιλείας (kingdoms) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) αὐτῶν (of them), ⁹ καὶ (and) εἶπεν (he says) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ταῦτά (These things) σοι (to You) πάντα (all) δώσω (will I give), ἐὰν (if) πεσὼν (falling down), προσκυνήσῃς (You will worship) μοι (me).” ¹⁰ Τότε (Then) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ὕπαγε (Get you away), Σατανᾶ (Satan); γέγραπται (it has been written) γάρ (for): ‘Κύριον (The Lord) τὸν (the) θεόν (God) σου (of you), προσκυνήσεις (you shall worship), καὶ (and) αὐτῷ (Him) μόνῳ (alone) λατρεύσεις (shall you serve).’”

¹ Γίνεσθε (Be) οὖν (therefore) μιμηταὶ (imitators) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὡς (as) τέκνα (children) ἀγαπητά (beloved), ² καὶ (and) περιπατεῖτε (walk) ἐν (in) ἀγάπῃ (love), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) ὁ (-) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἠγάπησεν (loved) ἡμᾶς* (us) καὶ (and) παρέδωκεν (gave up) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) προσφορὰν (as an offering) καὶ (and) θυσίαν (a sacrifice) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), εἰς (into) ὀσμὴν (an aroma) εὐωδίας (of a sweet smell). ³ Πορνεία (Sexual immorality) δὲ (however), καὶ (and) ἀκαθαρσία (impurity) πᾶσα (all), ἢ (or) πλεονεξία (covetousness), μηδὲ (not even) ὀνομαζέσθω (let be named) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), καθὼς (as also) πρέπει (is proper) ἁγίοις (to saints), ⁴ καὶ (and) αἰσχρότης (filthiness), καὶ (and) μωρολογία (foolish talking), ἢ (or) εὐτραπελία (crude joking), ἃ (which) οὐκ (not) ἀνῆκεν (are fitting); ἀλλὰ (but) μᾶλλον (rather) εὐχαριστία (thanksgiving). ⁵ τοῦτο (This) γὰρ (for) ἴστε (you know), γινώσκοντες (realizing) ὅτι (that) πᾶς (any) πόρνος (fornicator), ἢ (or) ἀκάθαρτος (unclean person), ἢ (or) πλεονέκτης (covetous man), ὅ (who) ἐστιν (is) εἰδωλολάτρης (an idolater), οὐκ (not) ἔχει (has) κληρονομίαν (inheritance) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), καὶ (and) Θεοῦ (of God). ⁶ Μηδεὶς (No one) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀπατάτω (let deceive) κενοῖς (with empty) λόγοις (words), διὰ (because of) ταῦτα (these things) γὰρ (for) ἔρχεται (comes) ἡ (the) ὀργὴ (wrath) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐπὶ (upon) τοὺς (the) υἱοὺς (sons) τῆς (-) ἀπειθείας (of disobedience). ⁷ μὴ (Not) οὖν (therefore) γίνεσθε (be) συμμέτοχοι (partakers) αὐτῶν (with them).

⁵ Εἷς (One) γὰρ (for) Θεός (God there is), εἷς (one) καὶ (then) μεσίτης (mediator) Θεοῦ (between God) καὶ (and) ἀνθρώπων (men), ἄνθρωπος (the man) Χριστὸς (Christ) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus),

¹ Ἀγαπητοί (Beloved), μὴ (not) παντὶ (every) πνεύματι (spirit) πιστεύετε (believe), ἀλλὰ (but) δοκιμάζετε (test) τὰ (the) πνεύματα (spirits), εἰ (whether) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) ἐστιν (they are), ὅτι (because) πολλοὶ (many) ψευδοπροφῆται (false prophets) ἐξεληλύθασιν (have gone out) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world).
