⁴ Πρὸς (To) ὃν (whom) προσερχόμενοι (coming), λίθον (a stone) ζῶντα (living), ὑπὸ (by) ἀνθρώπων (men) μὲν (indeed) ἀποδεδοκιμασμένον (rejected), παρὰ (in the sight of) δὲ (however) Θεῷ (God) ἐκλεκτὸν (chosen) ἔντιμον (and precious), ⁵ καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (you yourselves) ὡς (as) λίθοι (stones) ζῶντες (living), οἰκοδομεῖσθε (are being built up) οἶκος (as a house) πνευματικὸς (spiritual) εἰς (into) ἱεράτευμα (a priesthood) ἅγιον (holy), ἀνενέγκαι (to offer) πνευματικὰς (spiritual) θυσίας (sacrifices) εὐπροσδέκτους (acceptable) [τῷ] (-) Θεῷ (to God) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ). ⁶ διότι (Therefore) περιέχει (it is contained) ἐν (in) γραφῇ (Scripture): “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), τίθημι (I lay) ἐν (in) Σιὼν (Zion) λίθον (a stone), ἐκλεκτὸν (a chosen) ἀκρογωνιαῖον (cornerstone), ἔντιμον (precious); καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) πιστεύων (believing) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτῷ (Him), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) καταισχυνθῇ (shall be put to shame).” ⁷ Ὑμῖν (To you) οὖν (therefore is) ἡ (the) τιμὴ (preciousness), τοῖς (-) πιστεύουσιν (believing); ἀπιστοῦσιν (to those disobeying), δὲ (however), “Λίθος (The stone) ὃν (which) ἀπεδοκίμασαν (have rejected) οἱ (those) οἰκοδομοῦντες (building), οὗτος (this) ἐγενήθη (has become) εἰς (into) κεφαλὴν (the head) γωνίας (of the corner),” ⁸ Καὶ (and), “Λίθος (A stone) προσκόμματος (of stumbling) καὶ (and) πέτρα (a rock) σκανδάλου (of offense).” Οἳ (They) προσκόπτουσιν (stumble at), τῷ (to the) λόγῳ (word) ἀπειθοῦντες (being disobedient), εἰς (to) ὃ (which) καὶ (also) ἐτέθησαν (they were appointed). ⁹ Ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) γένος (are a race) ἐκλεκτόν (chosen), βασίλειον (a royal) ἱεράτευμα (priesthood), ἔθνος (a nation) ἅγιον (holy), λαὸς (a people) εἰς (for His) περιποίησιν (possession), ὅπως (so that) τὰς (the) ἀρετὰς (excellencies) ἐξαγγείλητε (you may proclaim) τοῦ (of the One) ἐκ (out of) σκότους (darkness) ὑμᾶς (you) καλέσαντος (having called), εἰς (to) τὸ (the) θαυμαστὸν (marvelous) αὐτοῦ (of Him) φῶς (light), ¹⁰ οἵ (who) ποτε (once were) οὐ (not) λαὸς (a people), νῦν (now) δὲ (however) λαὸς (the people) Θεοῦ (of God); οἱ (those) οὐκ (not) ἠλεημένοι (having received mercy), νῦν (now) δὲ (however) ἐλεηθέντες (having received mercy).

⁹ οὐ (Not) βραδύνει (does delay) Κύριος (the Lord) τῆς (the) ἐπαγγελίας (promise), ὥς (as) τινες (some) βραδύτητα (slowness) ἡγοῦνται (esteem), ἀλλὰ (but) μακροθυμεῖ (is patient) εἰς (toward) ὑμᾶς (you), μὴ (not) βουλόμενός (willing) τινας (for any) ἀπολέσθαι (to perish), ἀλλὰ (but) πάντας (all) εἰς (to) μετάνοιαν (repentance) χωρῆσαι (to come).

¹⁵ Δι’ (Through) αὐτοῦ (Him) οὖν (then) ἀναφέρωμεν (we should offer) θυσίαν (the sacrifice) αἰνέσεως (of praise) διὰ (through) παντὸς (everything) τῷ (to) Θεῷ (God), τοῦτ’ (that) ἔστιν (is), καρπὸν (the fruit) χειλέων (of the lips) ὁμολογούντων (confessing) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

¹ Παρακαλῶ (I exhort) οὖν (therefore) ὑμᾶς (you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), διὰ (through) τῶν (the) οἰκτιρμῶν (compassions) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), παραστῆσαι (to present) τὰ (the) σώματα (bodies) ὑμῶν (of you) θυσίαν (a sacrifice) ζῶσαν (living), ἁγίαν (holy), «τῷ (-) Θεῷ» (to God) εὐάρεστον (well-pleasing), τὴν (which is) λογικὴν (the reasonable) λατρείαν (service) ὑμῶν (of you).

⁴ μὴ (not) τὰ (the things) ἑαυτῶν (of themselves) ἕκαστοι (each) σκοποῦντες (considering), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) τὰ (the things) ἑτέρων (of others) ἕκαστοι (each).

¹⁶ Οὕτως (Thus) γὰρ (for) ἠγάπησεν (loved) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ὥστε (that) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son), τὸν (the) μονογενῆ (only begotten), ἔδωκεν (He gave), ἵνα (so that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) αὐτὸν (Him) μὴ (not) ἀπόληται (should perish), ἀλλ’ (but) ἔχῃ (should have) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal).

¹² Αὕτη (This) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (-) ἐντολὴ (commandment) ἡ (-) ἐμὴ (My), ἵνα (that) ἀγαπᾶτε (you love) ἀλλήλους (one another) καθὼς (as) ἠγάπησα (I loved) ὑμᾶς (you). ¹³ μείζονα (Greater) ταύτης (than this) ἀγάπην (love) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἔχει (has), ἵνα (that) τις (one) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of him) θῇ (should lay down) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (the) φίλων (friends) αὐτοῦ (of him). ¹⁴ Ὑμεῖς (You) φίλοι (friends) μού (of Me) ἐστε (are) ἐὰν (if) ποιῆτε (you do) ἃ* (what) ἐγὼ (I) ἐντέλλομαι (command) ὑμῖν (you).

⁸ συνίστησιν (Demonstrates) δὲ (however) τὴν (the) ἑαυτοῦ (of Himself) ἀγάπην (love) εἰς (to) ἡμᾶς (us) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), ὅτι (that) ἔτι (still) ἁμαρτωλῶν (sinners) ὄντων (being) ἡμῶν (of us), Χριστὸς (Christ) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) ἀπέθανεν (died).

¹ Παρακαλῶ (I exhort) οὖν (therefore) ὑμᾶς (you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), διὰ (through) τῶν (the) οἰκτιρμῶν (compassions) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), παραστῆσαι (to present) τὰ (the) σώματα (bodies) ὑμῶν (of you) θυσίαν (a sacrifice) ζῶσαν (living), ἁγίαν (holy), «τῷ (-) Θεῷ» (to God) εὐάρεστον (well-pleasing), τὴν (which is) λογικὴν (the reasonable) λατρείαν (service) ὑμῶν (of you). ² καὶ (And) μὴ (not) συσχηματίζεσθε (be conformed) τῷ (to the) αἰῶνι (age) τούτῳ (this), ἀλλὰ (but) μεταμορφοῦσθε (be transformed) τῇ (by the) ἀνακαινώσει (renewing) τοῦ (of the) νοός (mind), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) δοκιμάζειν (to prove) ὑμᾶς (by you), τί (what is) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τὸ (-) ἀγαθὸν (good) καὶ (and) εὐάρεστον (well-pleasing) καὶ (and) τέλειον (perfect).

¹⁶ τῆς (-) δὲ (And) εὐποιΐας (the good) καὶ (and) κοινωνίας (of sharing), μὴ (not) ἐπιλανθάνεσθε (be forgetful); τοιαύταις (with such) γὰρ (for) θυσίαις (sacrifices) εὐαρεστεῖται (is well pleased) ὁ (-) Θεός (God).
