²⁰ Καὶ (And) αὐτὸς (He), ἐπάρας (having lifted up) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (gaze) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (upon) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἔλεγεν (was saying): “Μακάριοι (Blessed are) οἱ (the) πτωχοί (poor), Ὅτι (for) ὑμετέρα (yours) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ²¹ Μακάριοι (Blessed are) οἱ (those) πεινῶντες (hungering) νῦν (now), Ὅτι (for) χορτασθήσεσθε (you will be filled). Μακάριοι (Blessed are) οἱ (those) κλαίοντες (weeping) νῦν (now), Ὅτι (for) γελάσετε (you will laugh).

¹² Ἔλεγεν (He was saying) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) τῷ (to the one) κεκληκότι (having invited) αὐτόν (Him), “Ὅταν (When) ποιῇς (you make) ἄριστον (a dinner) ἢ (or) δεῖπνον (a supper), μὴ (not) φώνει (call) τοὺς (-) φίλους (friends) σου (of you), μηδὲ (nor) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφούς (brothers) σου (of you), μηδὲ (nor) τοὺς (the) συγγενεῖς (relatives) σου (of you), μηδὲ (nor) γείτονας (neighbors) πλουσίους (rich), μή‿ (lest) ποτε (ever) καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (they) ἀντικαλέσωσίν (should invite in return) σε (you), καὶ (and) γένηται (be made) ἀνταπόδομά (recompense) σοι (to you). ¹³ ἀλλ’ (But) ὅταν (when) δοχὴν (a feast) ποιῇς (you make), κάλει (call) πτωχούς (the poor), ἀναπείρους (the crippled), χωλούς (the lame), τυφλούς (the blind); ¹⁴ καὶ (and) μακάριος (blessed) ἔσῃ (you will be), ὅτι (because) οὐκ (nothing) ἔχουσιν (they have) ἀνταποδοῦναί (to repay) σοι (you). ἀνταποδοθήσεται (It will be recompensed) γάρ (for) σοι (to you) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀναστάσει (resurrection) τῶν (of the) δικαίων (righteous).”

⁷ μὴ (Not) θαυμάσῃς (do wonder) ὅτι (that) εἶπόν (I said) σοι (to you), ‘Δεῖ (It is necessary for) ὑμᾶς (you all) γεννηθῆναι (to be born) ἄνωθεν (from above).’ ⁸ τὸ (The) πνεῦμα (wind) ὅπου (where) θέλει (it wishes) πνεῖ (blows), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) φωνὴν (sound) αὐτοῦ (of it) ἀκούεις (You hear), ἀλλ’ (but) οὐκ (not) οἶδας (you know) πόθεν (from where) ἔρχεται (it comes), καὶ (and) ποῦ (where) ὑπάγει (it goes); οὕτως (thus) ἐστὶν (is) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) γεγεννημένος (having been born) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) Πνεύματος (Spirit).” ⁹ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Νικόδημος (Nicodemus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Πῶς (How) δύναται (are able) ταῦτα (these things) γενέσθαι (to be)?” ¹⁰ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) διδάσκαλος (teacher) τοῦ (-) Ἰσραὴλ (of Israel), καὶ (and) ταῦτα (these things) οὐ (not) γινώσκεις (know)? ¹¹ ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) σοι (to you) ὅτι (that) ὃ (what) οἴδαμεν (we know) λαλοῦμεν (we speak), καὶ (and) ὃ (what) ἑωράκαμεν (we have seen) μαρτυροῦμεν (we bear witness to); καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (witness) ἡμῶν (of us) οὐ (not) λαμβάνετε (you people receive). ¹² Εἰ (If) τὰ (things) ἐπίγεια (earthly) εἶπον (I have told) ὑμῖν (you), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) πιστεύετε (you believe), πῶς (how) ἐὰν (if) εἴπω (I tell) ὑμῖν (to you) τὰ (the things) ἐπουράνια (heavenly), πιστεύσετε (will you believe)? ¹³ καὶ (And) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἀναβέβηκεν (has gone up) εἰς (into) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the One) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) καταβάς (having come down), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man). ¹⁴ καὶ (And) καθὼς (as) Μωϋσῆς (Moses) ὕψωσεν (lifted up) τὸν (the) ὄφιν (serpent) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness), οὕτως (thus) ὑψωθῆναι (to be lifted up) δεῖ (it behooves) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man), ¹⁵ ἵνα (so that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) πιστεύων (believing) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) ἔχῃ (may have) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal). ¹⁶ Οὕτως (Thus) γὰρ (for) ἠγάπησεν (loved) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ὥστε (that) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son), τὸν (the) μονογενῆ (only begotten), ἔδωκεν (He gave), ἵνα (so that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) αὐτὸν (Him) μὴ (not) ἀπόληται (should perish), ἀλλ’ (but) ἔχῃ (should have) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal). ¹⁷ οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἀπέστειλεν (sent) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (-) Υἱὸν (His Son) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) ἵνα (that) κρίνῃ (He might judge) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) σωθῇ (might be saved) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him). ¹⁸ ὁ (The one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (on) αὐτὸν (Him) οὐ (not) κρίνεται (is judged); ὁ (the one) ‹δὲ› (but) μὴ (not) πιστεύων (believing) ἤδη (already) κέκριται (has been judged), ὅτι (because) μὴ (not) πεπίστευκεν (he has believed) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) τοῦ (of the) μονογενοῦς (only begotten) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹² τῇ (-) ἐλπίδι (in hope) χαίροντες (rejoicing), τῇ (-) θλίψει (in tribulation) ὑπομένοντες (being patient), τῇ (-) προσευχῇ (in prayer) προσκαρτεροῦντες (being constant),

¹¹ καὶ (And) ταῦτά (such) τινες (some of) ἦτε (you were); ἀλλὰ (but) ἀπελούσασθε (you were washed), ἀλλὰ (but) ἡγιάσθητε (you were sanctified), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐδικαιώθητε (you were justified), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) καὶ (and) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) τοῦ (of the) Θεοῦ (God) ἡμῶν (of us).

¹⁸ διὰ (through) πάσης (all) προσευχῆς (prayer) καὶ (and) δεήσεως (supplication), προσευχόμενοι (praying) ἐν (in) παντὶ (every) καιρῷ (season) ἐν (in) Πνεύματι (the Spirit), καὶ (and) εἰς (unto) αὐτὸ (this very thing), ἀγρυπνοῦντες (watching) ἐν (with) πάσῃ (all) προσκαρτερήσει (perseverance) καὶ (and) δεήσει (supplication) περὶ (for) πάντων (all) τῶν (-) ἁγίων (saints),

¹⁸ Φόβος (Fear) οὐκ (no) ἔστιν (there is) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) ἀγάπῃ (love), ἀλλ’ (but) ἡ (-) τελεία (perfect) ἀγάπη (love) ἔξω (out) βάλλει (casts) τὸν (-) φόβον (fear), ὅτι (because) ὁ (the) φόβος (fear) κόλασιν (punishment) ἔχει (has); ὁ (the one) δὲ (now) φοβούμενος (fearing), οὐ (not) τετελείωται (has been perfected) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) ἀγάπῃ (love).

¹⁷ ὃς (Whoever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) ἔχῃ (might have) τὸν (the) βίον (goods) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world), καὶ (and) θεωρῇ (might see) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) χρείαν (need) ἔχοντα (having), καὶ (and) κλείσῃ (might close up) τὰ (the) σπλάγχνα (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him), πῶς (how) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) μένει (abides) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him)?

¹⁶ Καὶ (And) ἦλθεν (He came) εἰς (to) Ναζαρά (Nazareth), οὗ (where) ἦν (He had been) τεθραμμένος (brought up); καὶ (and) εἰσῆλθεν (He entered) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) εἰωθὸς (custom) αὐτῷ (to Him), ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τῶν (of the) σαββάτων (Sabbaths), εἰς (into) τὴν (the) συναγωγήν (synagogue), καὶ (and) ἀνέστη (stood up) ἀναγνῶναι (to read). ¹⁷ καὶ (And) ἐπεδόθη (there was given) αὐτῷ (to Him) βιβλίον (the scroll of) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet) Ἠσαΐου (Isaiah), καὶ (and) ἀναπτύξας* (having unrolled) τὸ (the) βιβλίον (scroll), εὗρεν (He found) τὸν (the) τόπον (place) οὗ (where) ἦν (it was) γεγραμμένον (written): ¹⁸ “Πνεῦμα (The Spirit) Κυρίου (of the Lord is) ἐπ’ (upon) ἐμέ (Me), Οὗ (of which) εἵνεκεν (because) ἔχρισέν (He has anointed) με (Me) Εὐαγγελίσασθαι (to preach good news) πτωχοῖς (to the poor). Ἀπέσταλκέν (He has sent) με (Me) κηρῦξαι (to proclaim) αἰχμαλώτοις (to the captives) ἄφεσιν (deliverance), Καὶ (and) τυφλοῖς (to the blind) ἀνάβλεψιν (recovery of sight), Ἀποστεῖλαι (to send forth) τεθραυσμένους (the oppressed) ἐν (in) ἀφέσει (deliverance), ¹⁹ Κηρῦξαι (to proclaim) ἐνιαυτὸν (the year) Κυρίου (of the Lord’s) δεκτόν (favor).” ²⁰ Καὶ (And) πτύξας (having rolled up) τὸ (the) βιβλίον (scroll), ἀποδοὺς (having delivered it) τῷ (to the) ὑπηρέτῃ (attendant), ἐκάθισεν (He sat down), καὶ (and) πάντων (of all) οἱ (the) ὀφθαλμοὶ (eyes) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) συναγωγῇ (synagogue) ἦσαν (were) ἀτενίζοντες (fixed upon) αὐτῷ (Him). ²¹ ἤρξατο (He began) δὲ (then) λέγειν (to say) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) ὅτι (-), “Σήμερον (Today) πεπλήρωται (is fulfilled) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture) αὕτη (this), ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ὠσὶν (hearing) ὑμῶν (of you).”

⁴⁴ Πάντες (All) δὲ (now) οἱ (-) ‹πιστεύοντες (having believed) ἦσαν› (were) ἐπὶ (together) τὸ (the) αὐτὸ (same) ‹καὶ› (and) εἶχον (having) ἅπαντα (all things) κοινά (in common);

⁸ Τῇ (-) γὰρ (For) χάριτί (by grace) ἐστε (you are) σεσῳσμένοι (saved) διὰ (through) πίστεως (faith), καὶ (and) τοῦτο (this) οὐκ (not) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (yourselves); Θεοῦ (it is of God) τὸ (the) δῶρον (gift),

¹⁵ Βλέπετε (Take heed) οὖν (therefore) ἀκριβῶς (carefully) πῶς (how) περιπατεῖτε (you walk), μὴ (not) ὡς (as) ἄσοφοι (unwise), ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (as) σοφοί (wise), ¹⁶ ἐξαγοραζόμενοι (redeeming) τὸν (the) καιρόν (time), ὅτι (because) αἱ (the) ἡμέραι (days) πονηραί (evil) εἰσιν (are). ¹⁷ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), μὴ (not) γίνεσθε (be) ἄφρονες (foolish), ἀλλὰ (but) συνίετε (understand) τί (what) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord is). ¹⁸ καὶ (And) μὴ (not) μεθύσκεσθε (to be drunk) οἴνῳ (with wine), ἐν (in) ᾧ (which) ἐστιν (is) ἀσωτία (debauchery). ἀλλὰ (Instead) πληροῦσθε (be filled) ἐν (with) Πνεύματι (the Spirit),

¹⁷ ὥστε (Therefore) εἴ (if) τις (anyone) ἐν (is in) Χριστῷ (Christ), καινὴ (he is a new) κτίσις (creation). τὰ (The) ἀρχαῖα (old things) παρῆλθεν (have passed away); ἰδοὺ (behold), γέγονεν (has come into being) καινά (the new).
