⁴² καὶ (And) προσκαλεσάμενος (having called near) αὐτοὺς (them), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Οἴδατε (You know) ὅτι (that) οἱ (those) δοκοῦντες (being accounted) ἄρχειν (to rule over) τῶν (the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) κατακυριεύουσιν (exercise lordship over) αὐτῶν (them); καὶ (and) οἱ (those) μεγάλοι (great ones) αὐτῶν (of them) κατεξουσιάζουσιν (exercise authority over) αὐτῶν (them). ⁴³ οὐχ (Not) οὕτως (thus) δέ (however) ἐστιν (shall it be) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you). ἀλλ’ (Instead), ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) θέλῃ (desires) μέγας (great) γενέσθαι (to become) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), ἔσται (will be) ὑμῶν (your) διάκονος (servant); ⁴⁴ καὶ (and) ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) θέλῃ (desires) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) εἶναι (to become) πρῶτος (first), ἔσται (will be) πάντων (of all) δοῦλος (slave). ⁴⁵ καὶ (Even) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) οὐκ (not) ἦλθεν (came) διακονηθῆναι (to be served), ἀλλὰ (but) διακονῆσαι (to serve), καὶ (and) δοῦναι (to give) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of Him) λύτρον (as a ransom) ἀντὶ (for) πολλῶν (many).”

¹¹ Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ὁ (the) ποιμὴν (shepherd) ὁ (-) καλός (good). ὁ (The) ποιμὴν (shepherd) ὁ (-) καλὸς (good), τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τίθησιν (lays down) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (the) προβάτων (sheep);

¹² Καθάπερ (Just as) γὰρ (for) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) ἕν (one) ἐστιν (is), καὶ (and) μέλη (members) πολλὰ (many) ἔχει (has), πάντα (all) δὲ (now) τὰ (the) μέλη (members) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body), πολλὰ (many) ὄντα (being), ἕν (one) ἐστιν (are) σῶμα (body); οὕτως (so) καὶ (also is) ὁ (-) Χριστός (Christ).

⁹ Τὸ (-) δὲ (And) καλὸν (in well) ποιοῦντες (doing), μὴ (not) ἐνκακῶμεν (we should grow weary); καιρῷ (in time) γὰρ (for) ἰδίῳ (due), θερίσομεν (we will reap a harvest) μὴ (not) ἐκλυόμενοι (giving up).

² καὶ (And) ἃ (the things which) ἤκουσας (you have heard) παρ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (me) διὰ (among) πολλῶν (many) μαρτύρων (witnesses), ταῦτα (these) παράθου (entrust) πιστοῖς (to faithful) ἀνθρώποις (men), οἵτινες (such as) ἱκανοὶ (sufficient) ἔσονται (will be) καὶ (also) ἑτέρους (others) διδάξαι (to teach).

¹³ πάντα (For all things) ἰσχύω (I have strength) ἐν (in) τῷ (the One) ἐνδυναμοῦντί (strengthening) με (me).

³ μηδ’ (not) ὡς (as) κατακυριεύοντες (exercising lordship over) τῶν (-) κλήρων (those in your charge), ἀλλὰ (but) τύποι (examples) γινόμενοι (being) τοῦ (to the) ποιμνίου (flock).

¹⁷ Πείθεσθε (Obey) τοῖς (those) ἡγουμένοις (leading) ὑμῶν (you), καὶ (and) ὑπείκετε (be submissive); αὐτοὶ (they) γὰρ (for) ἀγρυπνοῦσιν (watch) ὑπὲρ (over) τῶν (the) ψυχῶν (souls) ὑμῶν (of you), ὡς (as) λόγον (account) ἀποδώσοντες (about to give); ἵνα (that) μετὰ (with) χαρᾶς (joy) τοῦτο (this) ποιῶσιν (they might do), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) στενάζοντες (groaning), ἀλυσιτελὲς (unprofitable) γὰρ (indeed) ὑμῖν (for you is) τοῦτο (this).

²⁴ Ἐγένετο (There was) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) φιλονεικία (a dispute) ἐν (among) αὐτοῖς (them), τὸ (-) τίς (which) αὐτῶν (of them) δοκεῖ (is thought) εἶναι (to be) μείζων (the greatest). ²⁵ ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Οἱ (The) βασιλεῖς (kings) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) κυριεύουσιν (rule over) αὐτῶν (them), καὶ (and) οἱ (those) ἐξουσιάζοντες (exercising authority over) αὐτῶν (them), εὐεργέται (benefactors) καλοῦνται (are called). ²⁶ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) οὐχ (not) οὕτως (thus shall be). ἀλλ’ (Instead), ὁ (the) μείζων (greatest) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), γινέσθω (let him be) ὡς (as) ὁ (the) νεώτερος (younger); καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) ἡγούμενος (leading), ὡς (as) ὁ (the one) διακονῶν (serving). ²⁷ τίς (Who) γὰρ (for) μείζων (is greater), ὁ (the one) ἀνακείμενος (reclining) ἢ (or) ὁ (the one) διακονῶν (serving)? οὐχὶ (Is not) ὁ (the one) ἀνακείμενος (reclining)? ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) ἐν (in) μέσῳ (the midst) ὑμῶν (of you) εἰμι (am), ὡς (as) ὁ (the One) διακονῶν (serving).

¹² Ὅτε (When) οὖν (therefore) ἔνιψεν (He had washed) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (and) ἔλαβεν (taken) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) ἀνέπεσεν (having reclined) πάλιν (again), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Γινώσκετε (Do you know) τί (what) πεποίηκα (I have done) ὑμῖν (to you)? ¹³ ὑμεῖς (You) φωνεῖτέ (call) με (Me) Ὁ (-) Διδάσκαλος (Teacher) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) Κύριος (Lord), καὶ (and) καλῶς (rightly) λέγετε (you say), εἰμὶ (I am) γάρ (for). ¹⁴ εἰ (If) οὖν (therefore) ἐγὼ (I) ἔνιψα (have washed) ὑμῶν (your) τοὺς (-) πόδας (feet), ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Διδάσκαλος (Teacher), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ὀφείλετε (ought) ἀλλήλων (of one another) νίπτειν (to wash) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet). ¹⁵ ὑπόδειγμα (A pattern) γὰρ (for) ἔδωκα (I gave) ὑμῖν (you), ἵνα (that) καθὼς (as) ἐγὼ (I) ἐποίησα (did) ὑμῖν (to you), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ποιῆτε (should do).

⁹ Ἡ (Let) ἀγάπη (love be) ἀνυπόκριτος (unfeigned): ἀποστυγοῦντες (abhorring) τὸ (-) πονηρόν (evil), κολλώμενοι (cleaving to) τῷ (-) ἀγαθῷ (good), ¹⁰ τῇ (-) φιλαδελφίᾳ (in brotherly love) εἰς (to) ἀλλήλους (one another) φιλόστοργοι (devoted) τῇ (-) τιμῇ (in honor), ἀλλήλους (one another) προηγούμενοι (esteeming), ¹¹ τῇ (-) σπουδῇ (in diligence) μὴ (not) ὀκνηροί (lagging), τῷ (-) πνεύματι (in spirit) ζέοντες (being fervent), τῷ (the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) δουλεύοντες (serving), ¹² τῇ (-) ἐλπίδι (in hope) χαίροντες (rejoicing), τῇ (-) θλίψει (in tribulation) ὑπομένοντες (being patient), τῇ (-) προσευχῇ (in prayer) προσκαρτεροῦντες (being constant), ¹³ ταῖς (to the) χρείαις (needs) τῶν (of the) ἁγίων (saints) κοινωνοῦντες (contributing), τὴν (-) φιλοξενίαν (hospitality) διώκοντες (pursuing).

¹ Πιστὸς (Trustworthy is) ὁ (the) λόγος (saying): εἴ (If) τις (anyone) ἐπισκοπῆς (overseership) ὀρέγεται (aspires to), καλοῦ (of good) ἔργου (a work) ἐπιθυμεῖ (he is desirous). ² δεῖ (It behooves) οὖν (therefore) τὸν (the) ἐπίσκοπον (overseer) ἀνεπίλημπτον (above reproach) εἶναι (to be), μιᾶς (of one) γυναικὸς (wife) ἄνδρα (the husband), νηφάλιον (sober), σώφρονα (self-controlled), κόσμιον (respectable), φιλόξενον (hospitable), διδακτικόν (able to teach), ³ μὴ (not) πάροινον (given to wine), μὴ (not) πλήκτην (a striker), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐπιεικῆ (gentle), ἄμαχον (peaceable), ἀφιλάργυρον (not loving money), ⁴ τοῦ (the) ἰδίου (own) οἴκου (house) καλῶς (well) προϊστάμενον (managing), τέκνα (children) ἔχοντα (having) ἐν (in) ὑποταγῇ (submission), μετὰ (with) πάσης (all) σεμνότητος (dignity) — ⁵ εἰ (if) δέ (but) τις (one) τοῦ (the) ἰδίου (own) οἴκου (household) προστῆναι (to manage) οὐκ (not) οἶδεν (knows), πῶς (how) ἐκκλησίας (the church) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐπιμελήσεται (how will he care for)? — ⁶ μὴ (not) νεόφυτον (a novice), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) τυφωθεὶς (having been puffed up), εἰς (into) κρίμα (the judgment) ἐμπέσῃ (he might fall) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil). ⁷ δεῖ (It behooves him) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) μαρτυρίαν (a testimony) καλὴν (good) ἔχειν (to have) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (those) ἔξωθεν (outside), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) εἰς (into) ὀνειδισμὸν (reproach) ἐμπέσῃ (he might fall), καὶ (and) παγίδα (the snare) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil).

²⁵ ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), προσκαλεσάμενος (having called to him) αὐτοὺς (them), εἶπεν (said), “Οἴδατε (You know) ὅτι (that) οἱ (the) ἄρχοντες (rulers) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) κατακυριεύουσιν (exercise lordship over) αὐτῶν (them), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) μεγάλοι (great ones) κατεξουσιάζουσιν (exercise authority over) αὐτῶν (them). ²⁶ οὐχ (Not) οὕτως (thus) ἔσται* (will it be) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you); ἀλλ’ (but) ὃς (whoever) ἐὰν (if) θέλῃ (wishes) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) μέγας (great) γενέσθαι (to become), ἔσται (he will be) ὑμῶν (your) διάκονος (servant); ²⁷ καὶ (and) ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) θέλῃ (wishes) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) εἶναι (to be) πρῶτος (first), ἔσται (he will be) ὑμῶν (your) δοῦλος (slave); ²⁸ ὥσπερ (even as) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) οὐκ (not) ἦλθεν (came) διακονηθῆναι (to be served), ἀλλὰ (but) διακονῆσαι (to serve), καὶ (and) δοῦναι (to give) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of Him) λύτρον (as a ransom) ἀντὶ (for) πολλῶν (many).”

³ μηδὲν (nothing) κατ’ (according to) ἐριθείαν (self-interest) μηδὲ (or) κατὰ (according to) κενοδοξίαν (vain conceit), ἀλλὰ (but) τῇ (-) ταπεινοφροσύνῃ (in humility) ἀλλήλους (one another) ἡγούμενοι (be esteeming) ὑπερέχοντας (surpassing) ἑαυτῶν (themselves),

¹² Μηδείς (No one) σου (your) τῆς (-) νεότητος (youth) καταφρονείτω (let despise), ἀλλὰ (but) τύπος (a pattern) γίνου (be) τῶν (for the) πιστῶν (believers) ἐν (in) λόγῳ (speech), ἐν (in) ἀναστροφῇ (conduct), ἐν (in) ἀγάπῃ (love), ἐν (in) πίστει (faith), ἐν (in) ἁγνείᾳ (purity).
