²⁸ ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λέγω (say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) βλέπων (looking upon) γυναῖκα (a woman) πρὸς (in order) τὸ (-) ἐπιθυμῆσαι (to lust after) αὐτὴν (her) ἤδη (already) ἐμοίχευσεν (has committed adultery with) αὐτὴν (her) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him).

² διὰ (Because of) δὲ (however) τὰς (-) πορνείας (sexual immorality), ἕκαστος (each man) τὴν (the own) ἑαυτοῦ (of him) γυναῖκα (wife) ἐχέτω (let have), καὶ (and) ἑκάστη (each woman) τὸν (the) ἴδιον (own) ἄνδρα (husband) ἐχέτω (let have).

¹⁹ Φανερὰ (Evident) δέ (now) ἐστιν (are) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τῆς (of the) σαρκός (flesh), ἅτινά (which) ἐστιν (are) πορνεία (sexual immorality), ἀκαθαρσία (impurity), ἀσέλγεια (sensuality), ²⁰ εἰδωλολατρία (idolatry), φαρμακεία (sorcery), ἔχθραι (enmities), ἔρις (strife), ζῆλος (jealousy), θυμοί (outbursts of anger), ἐριθεῖαι (contentions), διχοστασίαι (dissensions), αἱρέσεις (factions), ²¹ φθόνοι (envyings), μέθαι (drunkennesses), κῶμοι (carousing), καὶ (and) τὰ (things) ὅμοια (like) τούτοις (these), ἃ (as to which) προλέγω (I forewarn) ὑμῖν (you), καθὼς (even as) προεῖπον (I warned before), ὅτι (that) οἱ (those) τὰ (such) τοιαῦτα (things) πράσσοντες (doing), βασιλείαν (kingdom) Θεοῦ (God’s) οὐ (not) κληρονομήσουσιν (will inherit).

³ Τοῦτο (This) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) θέλημα (the will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὁ (the) ἁγιασμὸς (sanctification) ὑμῶν (of you): ἀπέχεσθαι (To abstain) ὑμᾶς (you are) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) πορνείας (sexual immorality); ⁴ εἰδέναι (to know) ἕκαστον (each) ὑμῶν (of you how) τὸ (the) ἑαυτοῦ (of himself) σκεῦος (vessel) κτᾶσθαι (to control) ἐν (in) ἁγιασμῷ (holiness) καὶ (and) τιμῇ (honor), ⁵ μὴ (not) ἐν (in) πάθει (the passion) ἐπιθυμίας (of lust), καθάπερ (as) καὶ (also) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles), τὰ (-) μὴ (not) εἰδότα (knowing) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God);

¹ Ὁμοίως (Likewise) [αἱ] (-) γυναῖκες (wives), ὑποτασσόμεναι (be subject) τοῖς (to the) ἰδίοις (own) ἀνδράσιν (husbands), ἵνα (so that), καὶ (even) εἴ (if) τινες (any) ἀπειθοῦσιν (are disobedient) τῷ (to the) λόγῳ (word), διὰ (by) τῆς (the) τῶν (of the) γυναικῶν (wives) ἀναστροφῆς (conduct), ἄνευ (without) λόγου (word), κερδηθήσονται (they will be won over), ² ἐποπτεύσαντες (having witnessed) τὴν (the) ἐν (in) φόβῳ (respect) ἁγνὴν (pure) ἀναστροφὴν (conduct) ὑμῶν (of you), ³ ὧν (whose) ἔστω (let it be) οὐχ (not) ὁ (the) ἔξωθεν (external) ἐμπλοκῆς (of braiding) τριχῶν (of hair) καὶ (and) περιθέσεως (putting around) χρυσίων (of gold), ἢ (or) ἐνδύσεως (putting on) ἱματίων (of garments) κόσμος (adorning), ⁴ ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (the) κρυπτὸς (hidden) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart) ἄνθρωπος (man), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀφθάρτῳ (imperishable) τοῦ (of the) πραέως (gentle) καὶ (and) ἡσυχίου (quiet) πνεύματος (spirit), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) πολυτελές (of great worth). ⁵ Οὕτως (In this way) γάρ (for) ποτε (formerly) καὶ (also) αἱ (the) ἅγιαι (holy) γυναῖκες (women) αἱ (-) ἐλπίζουσαι (hoping) εἰς (in) Θεὸν (God) ἐκόσμουν (used to adorn) ἑαυτάς (themselves), ὑποτασσόμεναι (being subject) τοῖς (to the) ἰδίοις (own) ἀνδράσιν (husbands), ⁶ ὡς (as) Σάρρα (Sarah) ὑπήκουσεν (obeyed) τῷ (-) Ἀβραάμ (Abraham), κύριον (lord) αὐτὸν (him) καλοῦσα (calling), ἧς (of whom) ἐγενήθητε (you have become) τέκνα (children), ἀγαθοποιοῦσαι (doing good) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) φοβούμεναι (fearing) μηδεμίαν (not one) πτόησιν (consternation). ⁷ Οἱ (-) ἄνδρες (Husbands) ὁμοίως (likewise), συνοικοῦντες (dwelling with them) κατὰ (according to) γνῶσιν (knowledge), ὡς (as) ἀσθενεστέρῳ (with a weaker) σκεύει (vessel) τῷ (with the) γυναικείῳ (female), ἀπονέμοντες (rendering) τιμήν (honor), ὡς (as) καὶ (also) συνκληρονόμοις (joint-heirs) χάριτος (of the grace) ζωῆς (of life), εἰς (so as for) τὸ (-) μὴ (not) ἐνκόπτεσθαι (to be hindered) τὰς (the) προσευχὰς (prayers) ὑμῶν (of you). ⁸ Τὸ (-) δὲ (Now) τέλος (the end): πάντες (All be) ὁμόφρονες (single-minded), συμπαθεῖς (sympathetic), φιλάδελφοι (loving as brothers), εὔσπλαγχνοι (tender-hearted), ταπεινόφρονες (humble), ⁹ μὴ (not) ἀποδιδόντες (repaying) κακὸν (evil) ἀντὶ (for) κακοῦ (evil) ἢ (or) λοιδορίαν (insult) ἀντὶ (for) λοιδορίας (insult); τοὐναντίον (on the contrary) δὲ (however), εὐλογοῦντες (blessing), ὅτι (because) εἰς (to) τοῦτο (this) ἐκλήθητε (you were called), ἵνα (so that) εὐλογίαν (blessing) κληρονομήσητε (you should inherit). ¹⁰ “Ὁ (The one) γὰρ (for) θέλων (desiring) ζωὴν (life) ἀγαπᾶν (to love), καὶ (and) ἰδεῖν (to see) ἡμέρας (days) ἀγαθὰς (good), παυσάτω (let him keep) τὴν (the) γλῶσσαν (tongue) ἀπὸ (from) κακοῦ (evil), καὶ (and) χείλη (lips) τοῦ (-) μὴ (not) λαλῆσαι (to speak) δόλον (deceit). ¹¹ ἐκκλινάτω (Let him turn away) δὲ (also) ἀπὸ (from) κακοῦ (evil), καὶ (and) ποιησάτω (let him do) ἀγαθόν (good). ζητησάτω (Let him seek) εἰρήνην (peace) καὶ (and) διωξάτω (let him pursue) αὐτήν (it). ¹² ὅτι (Because) ὀφθαλμοὶ (the eyes) Κυρίου (of the Lord) ἐπὶ (are on) δικαίους (the righteous), καὶ (and) ὦτα (the ears) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (toward) δέησιν (prayer) αὐτῶν (of them). πρόσωπον (The face) δὲ (however) Κυρίου (of the Lord) ἐπὶ (is against) ποιοῦντας (those doing) κακά (evil).” ¹³ Καὶ (And) τίς (who is) ὁ (he who) κακώσων (will harm) ὑμᾶς (you), ἐὰν (if) τοῦ (for that which is) ἀγαθοῦ (good), ζηλωταὶ (zealous) γένησθε (you should be)? ¹⁴ Ἀλλ’ (But) εἰ (if) καὶ (even) πάσχοιτε (you should suffer) διὰ (because of) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness), μακάριοι (you are blessed). “Τὸν (-) δὲ (And) φόβον (the threats) αὐτῶν (of them) μὴ (not) φοβηθῆτε (you should be afraid of), μηδὲ (neither) ταραχθῆτε (should you be troubled).” ¹⁵ Κύριον (As Lord) δὲ (however), τὸν (-) Χριστὸν (Christ) ἁγιάσατε (sanctify) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) καρδίαις (hearts) ὑμῶν (of you), ἕτοιμοι (ready) ἀεὶ (always) πρὸς (for) ἀπολογίαν (a defense) παντὶ (to everyone) τῷ (-) αἰτοῦντι (asking) ὑμᾶς (you) λόγον (an account) περὶ (concerning) τῆς (the) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) ἐλπίδος (hope); ἀλλὰ (yet) μετὰ (with) πραΰτητος (gentleness) καὶ (and) φόβου (fear), ¹⁶ συνείδησιν (a conscience) ἔχοντες (having) ἀγαθήν (good), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) ᾧ (this) καταλαλεῖσθε (they might speak against you), καταισχυνθῶσιν (they shall be ashamed) οἱ (those) ἐπηρεάζοντες (reviling) ὑμῶν (your) τὴν (-) ἀγαθὴν (good) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἀναστροφήν (manner of life). ¹⁷ κρεῖττον (It is better) γὰρ (for) ἀγαθοποιοῦντας (doing good) εἰ (if) θέλοι (wills it) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), πάσχειν (to suffer), ἢ (than) κακοποιοῦντας (doing evil), ¹⁸ ὅτι (because) καὶ (also) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἅπαξ (once) περὶ (for) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) ἔπαθεν* (suffered), δίκαιος (the righteous) ὑπὲρ (for) ἀδίκων (the unrighteous), ἵνα (so that) ὑμᾶς (you) προσαγάγῃ (He might bring) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), θανατωθεὶς (having been put to death) μὲν (indeed) σαρκὶ (in the flesh), ζωοποιηθεὶς (having been made alive) δὲ (however) πνεύματι (in the spirit), ¹⁹ ἐν (in) ᾧ (which) καὶ (also) τοῖς (to the) ἐν (in) φυλακῇ (prison) πνεύμασιν (spirits), πορευθεὶς (having gone) ἐκήρυξεν (He preached), ²⁰ ἀπειθήσασίν (having disobeyed) ποτε (at one time), ὅτε (when) ἀπεξεδέχετο (was waiting) ἡ (the) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) μακροθυμία (longsuffering) ἐν (in) ἡμέραις (the days) Νῶε (of Noah), κατασκευαζομένης (being prepared) κιβωτοῦ (of the ark), εἰς (in) ἣν (which) ὀλίγοι (a few) — τοῦτ’ (that) ἔστιν (is), ὀκτὼ (eight) ψυχαί (souls) — διεσώθησαν (were saved) δι’ (through) ὕδατος (water), ²¹ ὃ (which) καὶ (also) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀντίτυπον (prefigures) νῦν (now) σῴζει (saving) βάπτισμα (baptism), οὐ (not) σαρκὸς (of flesh) ἀπόθεσις (a putting away) ῥύπου (of the filth), ἀλλὰ (but) συνειδήσεως (of a conscience) ἀγαθῆς (good), ἐπερώτημα (the demand) εἰς (toward) Θεόν (God), δι’ (through) ἀναστάσεως (the resurrection) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ²² ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) ἐν (at) δεξιᾷ (the right hand) [τοῦ] (-) Θεοῦ (of God), πορευθεὶς (having gone) εἰς (into) οὐρανόν (heaven), ὑποταγέντων (having been subjected) αὐτῷ (to Him) ἀγγέλων (angels) καὶ (and) ἐξουσιῶν (authorities) καὶ (and) δυνάμεων (powers).

²⁶ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) παρέδωκεν (gave up) αὐτοὺς (them) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) εἰς (to) πάθη (passions) ἀτιμίας (of dishonor). αἵ (-) τε (Even) γὰρ (for) θήλειαι (females) αὐτῶν (of them) μετήλλαξαν (changed) τὴν (the) φυσικὴν (natural) χρῆσιν (use) εἰς (into) τὴν (that) παρὰ (contrary to) φύσιν (nature). ²⁷ ὁμοίως (Likewise) τε (then) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) ἄρσενες (males), ἀφέντες (having left) τὴν (the) φυσικὴν (natural) χρῆσιν (use) τῆς (of the) θηλείας (female), ἐξεκαύθησαν (were inflamed) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ὀρέξει (desire) αὐτῶν (of them) εἰς (toward) ἀλλήλους (one another), ἄρσενες (males) ἐν (with) ἄρσεσιν (males), τὴν (the) ἀσχημοσύνην (shame) κατεργαζόμενοι (working out), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ἀντιμισθίαν (recompense) ἣν (which) ἔδει (was fitting) τῆς (of the) πλάνης (error) αὐτῶν (of them), ἐν (in) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves) ἀπολαμβάνοντες (receiving).

¹ Ἐὰν (If) ταῖς (in the) γλώσσαις (tongues) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men) λαλῶ (I speak), καὶ (and) τῶν (-) ἀγγέλων (of angels), ἀγάπην (love) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) ἔχω (have), γέγονα (I have become) χαλκὸς (a brass) ἠχῶν (sounding), ἢ (or) κύμβαλον (a cymbal) ἀλαλάζον (clanging). ² καὶ (And) ἐὰν (if) ἔχω (I should have) προφητείαν (prophecy) καὶ (and) εἰδῶ (understand) τὰ (the) μυστήρια (mysteries) πάντα (all), καὶ (and) πᾶσαν (all) τὴν (the) γνῶσιν (knowledge), καὶ (and) ἐὰν (if) ἔχω (I should have) πᾶσαν (all) τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith), ὥστε (so as) ὄρη (mountains) μεθιστάναι (to remove), ἀγάπην (love) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) ἔχω (have), οὐθέν (nothing) εἰμι (I am). ³ καὶ (And) ἐὰν (if) ψωμίσω (I may give away) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) ὑπάρχοντά (possessions) μου (of me), καὶ (and) ἐὰν (if) παραδῶ (I may deliver up) τὸ (the) σῶμά (body) μου (of me) ἵνα (that) [καυχήσωμαι] (I may boast), ἀγάπην (love) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) ἔχω (have), οὐδὲν (nothing) ὠφελοῦμαι (I am profited). ⁴ Ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (Love) μακροθυμεῖ (is patient), χρηστεύεται (is kind); ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (love) οὐ (not) ζηλοῖ (is envious); ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (love) οὐ (not) περπερεύεται (is boastful), οὐ (not) φυσιοῦται (is puffed up), ⁵ οὐκ (not) ἀσχημονεῖ (acts unbecomingly); οὐ (not) ζητεῖ (seeks) τὰ (the things) ἑαυτῆς (of its own), οὐ (not) παροξύνεται (is easily provoked), οὐ (not) λογίζεται (it keeps account) τὸ (-) κακόν (of wrongs); ⁶ οὐ (not) χαίρει (delights) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (-) ἀδικίᾳ (unrighteousness), συνχαίρει (rejoices) δὲ (however) τῇ (in the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth). ⁷ πάντα (All things) στέγει (it bears), πάντα (all things) πιστεύει (believes), πάντα (all things) ἐλπίζει (hopes), πάντα (all things) ὑπομένει (endures). ⁸ Ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (Love) οὐδέποτε (never) πίπτει (fails); εἴτε (if) δὲ (however) προφητεῖαι (there are prophesies), καταργηθήσονται (they will be done away); εἴτε (if) γλῶσσαι (tongues), παύσονται (they will be ceased); εἴτε (if) γνῶσις (knowledge) καταργηθήσεται (it will pass away). ⁹ ἐκ (In) μέρους (part) γὰρ (for) γινώσκομεν (we know), καὶ (and) ἐκ (in) μέρους (part) προφητεύομεν (we prophesy); ¹⁰ ὅταν (when) δὲ (however) ἔλθῃ (should come) τὸ (the) τέλειον (perfect), τὸ (the) ἐκ (in) μέρους (part) καταργηθήσεται (will be done away). ¹¹ Ὅτε (When) ἤμην (I was) νήπιος (a child), ἐλάλουν (I was speaking) ὡς (like) νήπιος (a child), ἐφρόνουν (I was thinking) ὡς (like) νήπιος (a child), ἐλογιζόμην (I was reasoning) ὡς (like) νήπιος (a child); ὅτε (when) γέγονα (I became) ἀνήρ (a man), κατήργηκα (I did away with) τὰ (the things) τοῦ (of the) νηπίου (child). ¹² βλέπομεν (We see) γὰρ (for) ἄρτι (presently), δι’ (through) ἐσόπτρου (a glass) ἐν (in) αἰνίγματι (obscurity); τότε (then) δὲ (however), πρόσωπον (face) πρὸς (to) πρόσωπον (face); ἄρτι (presently), γινώσκω (I know) ἐκ (in) μέρους (part); τότε (then) δὲ (however) ἐπιγνώσομαι (I will know fully), καθὼς (as) καὶ (also) ἐπεγνώσθην (I have been fully known). ¹³ Νυνὶ (Now) δὲ (however) μένει (abide) πίστις (faith), ἐλπίς (hope), ἀγάπη (love), τὰ (the things) τρία (three) ταῦτα (these); μείζων (the greatest) δὲ (however) τούτων (of these is) ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (love).

¹³ Ὑμεῖς (You) γὰρ (for) ἐπ’ (to) ἐλευθερίᾳ (freedom) ἐκλήθητε (were called), ἀδελφοί (brothers); μόνον (but) μὴ (not) τὴν (the) ἐλευθερίαν (freedom) εἰς (for) ἀφορμὴν (an opportunity) τῇ (to the) σαρκί (flesh). ἀλλὰ (Rather) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) ἀγάπης (love), δουλεύετε (serve) ἀλλήλοις (one another).

¹⁹ Οἱ (-) ἄνδρες (Husbands), ἀγαπᾶτε (love) τὰς (the) γυναῖκας (wives), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) πικραίνεσθε (be harsh) πρὸς (toward) αὐτάς (them).

⁵ Νεκρώσατε (Put to death) οὖν (therefore) τὰ (the) μέλη (members) τὰ (which are) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth): πορνείαν (sexual immorality), ἀκαθαρσίαν (impurity), πάθος (passion), ἐπιθυμίαν (desire) κακήν (evil), καὶ (and) τὴν (-) πλεονεξίαν (covetousness), ἥτις (which) ἐστὶν (is) εἰδωλολατρία (idolatry),

⁹ ἐὰν (If) ὁμολογῶμεν (we should confess) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins) ἡμῶν (of us), πιστός (faithful) ἐστιν (He is) καὶ (and) δίκαιος (just), ἵνα (that) ἀφῇ (He may forgive) ἡμῖν (us) τὰς (our) ἁμαρτίας (sins), καὶ (and) καθαρίσῃ (might cleanse) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) πάσης (all) ἀδικίας (unrighteousness).

⁷ Ἀγαπητοί (Beloved), ἀγαπῶμεν (we should love) ἀλλήλους (one another), ὅτι (because) ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (love) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) ἐστιν (is); καὶ (and) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ἀγαπῶν (loving), ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) γεγέννηται (has been born), καὶ (and) γινώσκει (knows) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God). ⁸ ὁ (The one) μὴ (not) ἀγαπῶν (loving), οὐκ (not) ἔγνω (has known) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), ὅτι (because) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἀγάπη (love) ἐστίν (is).

¹ Περὶ (Concerning) δὲ (now) ὧν (the things about which) ἐγράψατε (you wrote): καλὸν (It is good) ἀνθρώπῳ (for a man) γυναικὸς (a woman) μὴ (not) ἅπτεσθαι (to touch). ² διὰ (Because of) δὲ (however) τὰς (-) πορνείας (sexual immorality), ἕκαστος (each man) τὴν (the own) ἑαυτοῦ (of him) γυναῖκα (wife) ἐχέτω (let have), καὶ (and) ἑκάστη (each woman) τὸν (the) ἴδιον (own) ἄνδρα (husband) ἐχέτω (let have). ³ Τῇ (To the) γυναικὶ (wife), ὁ (the) ἀνὴρ (husband) τὴν (the) ὀφειλὴν (duty) ἀποδιδότω (let fulfill); ὁμοίως (likewise) δὲ (now) καὶ (also), ἡ (the) γυνὴ (wife) τῷ (to the) ἀνδρί (husband). ⁴ ἡ (The) γυνὴ (wife), τοῦ (the) ἰδίου (own) σώματος (body) οὐκ (not) ἐξουσιάζει (has authority over), ἀλλὰ (but) ὁ (the) ἀνήρ (husband); ὁμοίως (likewise) δὲ (now), καὶ (also) ὁ (the) ἀνὴρ (husband) τοῦ (of the) ἰδίου (own) σώματος (body) οὐκ (not) ἐξουσιάζει (has authority over), ἀλλὰ (but) ἡ (the) γυνή (wife). ⁵ Μὴ (Not) ἀποστερεῖτε (deprive) ἀλλήλους (one another), εἰ (if) μήτι (not) ἂν (-) ἐκ (by) συμφώνου (mutual agreement), πρὸς (for) καιρὸν (a time), ἵνα (that) σχολάσητε (you might be at leisure) τῇ (-) προσευχῇ (for prayer); καὶ (and) πάλιν (again), ἐπὶ (together) τὸ (the) αὐτὸ (same) ἦτε (be), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) πειράζῃ (may tempt) ὑμᾶς (you) ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan), διὰ (through) τὴν (the) ἀκρασίαν (lack of self-control) ὑμῶν (of you). ⁶ τοῦτο (This) δὲ (now) λέγω (I say) κατὰ (by way of) συνγνώμην (concession), οὐ (not) κατ’ (by way of) ἐπιταγήν (command). ⁷ θέλω (I wish) δὲ (now) πάντας (all) ἀνθρώπους (men) εἶναι (to be) ὡς (like) καὶ (even) ἐμαυτόν (myself). ἀλλὰ (But) ἕκαστος (each) ἴδιον (his own) ἔχει (has) χάρισμα (gift) ἐκ (from) Θεοῦ (God); ὁ (one has) μὲν (indeed) οὕτως (this), ὁ (one) δὲ (however) οὕτως (that). ⁸ Λέγω (I say) δὲ (now) τοῖς (to the) ἀγάμοις (unmarried) καὶ (and) ταῖς (to the) χήραις (widows), καλὸν (it is good) αὐτοῖς (for them) ἐὰν (if) μείνωσιν (they should remain) ὡς (as) κἀγώ (even I). ⁹ εἰ (If) δὲ (however) οὐκ (not) ἐγκρατεύονται (they have self-control), γαμησάτωσαν (let them marry); κρεῖττον (better) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (it is) γαμῆσαι* (to marry) ἢ (than) πυροῦσθαι (to burn with passion). ¹⁰ Τοῖς (To those) δὲ (now) γεγαμηκόσιν (having married) παραγγέλλω (I give this charge)— οὐκ (not) ἐγὼ (I), ἀλλὰ (but) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord)— γυναῖκα (A wife) ἀπὸ (from) ἀνδρὸς (a husband) μὴ (not) χωρισθῆναι (is to be separated); ¹¹ ἐὰν (if) δὲ (however) καὶ (indeed) χωρισθῇ (she is separated), μενέτω (let her remain) ἄγαμος (unmarried), ἢ (or) τῷ (to the) ἀνδρὶ (husband) καταλλαγήτω (be reconciled); καὶ (and) ἄνδρα (a husband) γυναῖκα (a wife) μὴ (not) ἀφιέναι (is to send away). ¹² Τοῖς (To the) δὲ (now) λοιποῖς (rest) λέγω (I say)— ἐγώ (I) οὐχ (not) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord): εἴ (If) τις (any) ἀδελφὸς (brother) γυναῖκα (a wife) ἔχει (has) ἄπιστον (unbelieving), καὶ (and) αὕτη (she) συνευδοκεῖ (consents) οἰκεῖν (to dwell) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him), μὴ (not) ἀφιέτω (let him divorce) αὐτήν (her). ¹³ καὶ (And) γυνὴ (a woman) ‹εἴ (if) τις› (any) ἔχει (has) ἄνδρα (a husband) ἄπιστον (unbelieving), καὶ (and) οὗτος (he) συνευδοκεῖ (consents) οἰκεῖν (to dwell) μετ’ (with) αὐτῆς (her), μὴ (not) ἀφιέτω (let her divorce) τὸν (the) ἄνδρα (husband). ¹⁴ ἡγίασται (Is sanctified) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) ἀνὴρ (husband) ὁ (-) ἄπιστος (unbelieving), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) γυναικί (wife); καὶ (and) ἡγίασται (is sanctified) ἡ (the) γυνὴ (wife) ἡ (-) ἄπιστος (unbelieving), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀδελφῷ (husband); ἐπεὶ (else) ἄρα (then) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) ὑμῶν (of you) ἀκάθαρτά (unclean) ἐστιν (are); νῦν (now) δὲ (however) ἅγιά (holy) ἐστιν (they are). ¹⁵ Εἰ (If) δὲ (however) ὁ (the) ἄπιστος (unbeliever) χωρίζεται (separates himself), χωριζέσθω (let him separate himself); οὐ (not) δεδούλωται (is under bondage) ὁ (the) ἀδελφὸς (brother) ἢ (or) ἡ (the) ἀδελφὴ (sister) ἐν (in) τοῖς (-) τοιούτοις (such cases). ἐν (Into) δὲ (however) εἰρήνῃ (peace) κέκληκεν (has called) ὑμᾶς* (you) ὁ (-) Θεός (God). ¹⁶ τί (How) γὰρ (for) οἶδας (know you), γύναι (wife), εἰ (if) τὸν (the) ἄνδρα (husband) σώσεις (you will save)? ἢ (Or) τί (how) οἶδας (know you), ἄνερ (husband), εἰ (if) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) σώσεις (you will save)? ¹⁷ Εἰ (If) μὴ (not) ἑκάστῳ (to each), ὡς (as) ἐμέρισεν* (has assigned) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord), ἕκαστον (to each) ὡς (as) κέκληκεν (has called) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), οὕτως (so) περιπατείτω (let him walk). καὶ (And) οὕτως (thus) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἐκκλησίαις (churches) πάσαις (all) διατάσσομαι (I prescribe). ¹⁸ περιτετμημένος (Having been circumcised) τις (anyone) ἐκλήθη (was called)? μὴ (Not) ἐπισπάσθω (let him be uncircumcised). ἐν (In) ἀκροβυστίᾳ (uncircumcision) κέκληταί (was called) τις (anyone)? μὴ (Not) περιτεμνέσθω (let Him be circumcised). ¹⁹ ἡ (-) περιτομὴ (Circumcision) οὐδέν (nothing) ἐστιν (is), καὶ (and) ἡ (-) ἀκροβυστία (uncircumcision) οὐδέν (nothing) ἐστιν (is), ἀλλὰ (but) τήρησις (keeping) ἐντολῶν (the commandments) Θεοῦ (of God). ²⁰ Ἕκαστος (Each) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) κλήσει (calling) ᾗ (in which) ἐκλήθη (he has been called), ἐν (in) ταύτῃ (this) μενέτω (let him abide). ²¹ δοῦλος (Slave being) ἐκλήθης (were you called), μή (not) σοι (to you) μελέτω (let it be a care); ἀλλ’ (but) εἰ (if) καὶ (also) δύνασαι (you are able) ἐλεύθερος (free) γενέσθαι (to become), μᾶλλον (rather) χρῆσαι (take advantage). ²² ὁ (The one) γὰρ (for) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord) κληθεὶς (having been called) δοῦλος (being a slave), ἀπελεύθερος (a freedman) Κυρίου (of the Lord) ἐστίν (is); ὁμοίως (likewise) ὁ (the one) ἐλεύθερος (free) κληθεὶς (having been called), δοῦλός (a slave) ἐστιν (is) Χριστοῦ (of Christ). ²³ Τιμῆς (With a price) ἠγοράσθητε (you were bought); μὴ (not) γίνεσθε (become) δοῦλοι (slaves) ἀνθρώπων (of men). ²⁴ ἕκαστος (Each) ἐν (wherein) ᾧ (that) ἐκλήθη (he was called), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ἐν (in) τούτῳ (that) μενέτω (let him abide) παρὰ (with) Θεῷ (God). ²⁵ Περὶ (Concerning) δὲ (now) τῶν (the) παρθένων (virgins), ἐπιταγὴν (a commandment) Κυρίου (of the Lord) οὐκ (not) ἔχω (I have); γνώμην (judgment) δὲ (however) δίδωμι (I give), ὡς (as) ἠλεημένος (having received mercy) ὑπὸ (from) Κυρίου (the Lord), πιστὸς (trustworthy) εἶναι (to be). ²⁶ Νομίζω (I think) οὖν (therefore) τοῦτο (this) καλὸν (good) ὑπάρχειν (is), διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) ἐνεστῶσαν (present) ἀνάγκην (necessity), ὅτι (that) καλὸν (it is good) ἀνθρώπῳ (for a man) τὸ (-) οὕτως (in the same manner) εἶναι (to remain). ²⁷ δέδεσαι (Have you been bound) γυναικί (to a wife)? μὴ (Not) ζήτει (seek) λύσιν (to be loosed). λέλυσαι (Have you been loosed) ἀπὸ (from) γυναικός (a wife)? μὴ (Not) ζήτει (seek) γυναῖκα (a wife). ²⁸ ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) καὶ (also) γαμήσῃς (you shall have married), οὐχ (not) ἥμαρτες (you did sin); καὶ (and) ἐὰν (if) γήμῃ (shall have married) ἡ (the) παρθένος (virgin), οὐχ (not) ἥμαρτεν (she did sin); θλῖψιν (tribulation) δὲ (however) τῇ (in the) σαρκὶ (flesh) ἕξουσιν (will have) οἱ (-) τοιοῦτοι (such); ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (now) ὑμῶν (you) φείδομαι (am sparing). ²⁹ Τοῦτο (This) δέ (now) φημι (I say), ἀδελφοί (brothers): ὁ (The) καιρὸς (season) συνεσταλμένος (shortened) ἐστίν (is). τὸ (-) λοιπὸν (From now on) ἵνα (that) καὶ (both) οἱ (those) ἔχοντες (having) γυναῖκας (wives), ὡς (as) μὴ (none) ἔχοντες (having) ὦσιν (should be); ³⁰ καὶ (and) οἱ (those) κλαίοντες (weeping), ὡς (as) μὴ (not) κλαίοντες (weeping); καὶ (and) οἱ (those) χαίροντες (rejoicing), ὡς (as) μὴ (not) χαίροντες (rejoicing); καὶ (and) οἱ (those) ἀγοράζοντες (buying), ὡς (as) μὴ (not) κατέχοντες (possessing); ³¹ καὶ (and) οἱ (those) χρώμενοι (using) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ὡς (as) μὴ (not) καταχρώμενοι (using it as their own). παράγει (Is passing away) γὰρ (for) τὸ (the) σχῆμα (present form) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (this). ³² Θέλω (I desire) δὲ (now) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀμερίμνους (without concern) εἶναι (to be). ὁ (The) ἄγαμος (unmarried man) μεριμνᾷ (cares for) τὰ (the things) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord), πῶς (how) ἀρέσῃ (he should please) τῷ (the) Κυρίῳ (Lord); ³³ ὁ (the one) δὲ (however) γαμήσας (having been married), μεριμνᾷ (cares for) τὰ (the things) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world), πῶς (how) ἀρέσῃ (he should please) τῇ (the) γυναικί (wife), ³⁴ καὶ (and) μεμέρισται (is divided). καὶ (And) ἡ (the) γυνὴ (woman) ἡ (-) ἄγαμος (unmarried) καὶ (and) ἡ (-) παρθένος (virgin), μεριμνᾷ (cares for) τὰ (the things) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord), ἵνα (that) ᾖ (she should be) ἁγία (holy) καὶ (both) τῷ (in) σώματι (body) καὶ (and) τῷ (in) πνεύματι (spirit); ἡ (the one) δὲ (however) γαμήσασα (having been married), μεριμνᾷ (cares for) τὰ (the things) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world), πῶς (how) ἀρέσῃ (she should please) τῷ (the) ἀνδρί (husband). ³⁵ Τοῦτο (This) δὲ (now) πρὸς (for) τὸ (the) ὑμῶν (of you) αὐτῶν (yourselves) σύμφορον (benefit) λέγω (I say), οὐχ (not) ἵνα (that) βρόχον (a restraint) ὑμῖν (you) ἐπιβάλω (I might place upon), ἀλλὰ (but) πρὸς (for) τὸ (what) εὔσχημον (is seemly) καὶ (and) εὐπάρεδρον (devoted) τῷ (to the) Κυρίῳ (Lord), ἀπερισπάστως (without distraction). ³⁶ Εἰ (If) δέ (however) τις (anyone) ἀσχημονεῖν (to be behaving improperly) ἐπὶ (to) τὴν (the) παρθένον (virgin) αὐτοῦ (of him) νομίζει (supposes), ἐὰν (if) ᾖ (she is) ὑπέρακμος (beyond youth), καὶ (and) οὕτως (so) ὀφείλει (it ought) γίνεσθαι (to be), ὃ (what) θέλει (he wills) ποιείτω (let him do); οὐχ (not) ἁμαρτάνει (he does sin); γαμείτωσαν (let them marry). ³⁷ ὃς (He who) δὲ (however) ἕστηκεν (stands) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἑδραῖος (firm), μὴ (not) ἔχων (having) ἀνάγκην (necessity), ἐξουσίαν (authority) δὲ (however) ἔχει (having) περὶ (over) τοῦ (the) ἰδίου (own) θελήματος (will), καὶ (and) τοῦτο (this) κέκρικεν (has judged), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἰδίᾳ (own) καρδίᾳ (heart), τηρεῖν (to keep) τὴν (-) ἑαυτοῦ (the) παρθένον (virgin), καλῶς (well) ποιήσει (he will do). ³⁸ Ὥστε (So then) καὶ (also), ὁ (the one) γαμίζων (marrying) τὴν (the) ἑαυτοῦ (own) παρθένον (virgin), καλῶς (well) ποιεῖ (does); καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) μὴ (not) γαμίζων (marrying), κρεῖσσον (better) ποιήσει (will do). ³⁹ Γυνὴ (A wife) δέδεται (is bound) ἐφ’ (for) ὅσον (as long as) χρόνον (time) ζῇ (may live) ὁ (the) ἀνὴρ (husband) αὐτῆς (of her); ἐὰν (if) δὲ (however) κοιμηθῇ (shall have died) ὁ (the) ἀνήρ (husband), ἐλευθέρα (free) ἐστὶν (she is) ᾧ (to whom) θέλει (she wills) γαμηθῆναι (to be married), μόνον (only) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord). ⁴⁰ μακαριωτέρα (More blessed) δέ (however) ἐστιν (she is), ἐὰν (if) οὕτως (in the same manner) μείνῃ (she should remain), κατὰ (according to) τὴν (-) ἐμὴν (my) γνώμην (judgment); δοκῶ (I think) δὲ (now) κἀγὼ (myself also) Πνεῦμα (the Spirit) Θεοῦ (of God) ἔχειν (to have).
